Te’o statement claims he was “victim” of hoax

Manti Te'o AP

The statement issued by Notre Dame regarding the fictitious dead girlfriend of linebacker Manti Te’o paints the Heisman Trophy runner-up as the victim of a hoax.

Not surprisingly, the statement from Te’o makes that same claim.

“This is incredibly embarrassing to talk about, but over an extended period of time, I developed an emotional relationship with a woman I met online,” Te’o said in a statement released to PFT and other outlets.  “We maintained what I thought to be an authentic relationship by communicating frequently online and on the phone, and I grew to care deeply about her.

“To realize that I was the victim of what was apparently someone’s sick joke and constant lies was, and is, painful and humiliating.

“It further pains me that the grief I felt and the sympathies expressed to me at the time of my grandmother’s death in September were in any way deepened by what I believed to be another significant loss in my life.

“I am enormously grateful for the support of my family, friends and Notre Dame fans throughout this year. To think that I shared with them my happiness about my relationship and details that I thought to be true about her just makes me sick. I hope that people can understand how trying and confusing this whole experience has been.

“In retrospect, I obviously should have been much more cautious. If anything good comes of this, I hope it is that others will be far more guarded when they engage with people online than I was.

“Fortunately, I have many wonderful things in my life, and I’m looking forward to putting this painful experience behind me as I focus on preparing for the NFL Draft.”

His preparation for the draft will include facing plenty of questions from scouts and coaches and General Managers and the media regarding the details of the situation.  There are simply too many accounts of in-person contact between Te’o and his fictitious girlfriend to ignore the possibility that Te’o has staked out the safest harbor in a raging storm.

Indeed, if he were involved in any way in perpetrating the hoax (which the Deadspin story exposing the hoax strongly implies), it would be natural and fairly obvious to now claim that he was the victim.

If we’ve learned anything this week after the Lance Armstrong confession, it’s that everyone is capable of telling some pretty incredible lies, even those who can accomplish some pretty incredible things athletically.

Look, anything’s possible, but for this to be real, I’m supposed to believe that a star Notre Dame football player – the runner up for the Heisman – is having such a difficult time finding a date that he’s relegated to having an online and telephone relationship with a girl who would rather just “punk him” than actually be the girlfriend of a guy on the cusp of becoming an NFL millionaire.

Now THAT strikes me as a level of gullibility beyond anything Te’o may or may not have fallen for.

He better be prepared to offer some proof of all of this.

  23. Stiller43 says: Jan 16, 2013 7:10 PM

  24. sanchock says: Jan 16, 2013 7:11 PM

  25. Deb says: Jan 16, 2013 7:13 PM

It’s not gullibility when you claim to have met someone who doesn’t exist–and you’re involved with the guy running the fake Twitter accounts. It’s trying to win a Heisman on the sympathy vote.

The embarrassing thing is that not one reporter from the major news outlets–SI, ESPN, CBS, FOX–covering Te’o’s hearbreak bothered to pick up a phone and call the hospital to check out this sob story (journalism 101).

    Coaches and GMs beware.

And we all know (or at least should know) that people fool people online and people develop relationships with people they meet online.

  51. eatitfanboy says: Jan 16, 2013 7:46 PM

Set aside what Te’o did for a second.

Shame on the dozens and dozens of members of the national media who wrote breathless stories about the human drama of his girlfriend dying without doing the 10 minutes of background research it would have taken to raise red flags.

  53. notwhoyouthinkitis says: Jan 16, 2013 7:48 PM

Notice the “The statement issued by Notre Dame…”? That means it was not from T’eo at all. It was written by a Notre Dame PR person. Just like lawyers write statements for various celebrities (Mel Gibson comes to mind) after they get into trouble. It is a classic case of PR people telling T’eo that something has to be said to save face, so we’ll write it. T’eo is a football player; read the statement again…there is no way he wrote it. None.

  56. eatitfanboy says: Jan 16, 2013 7:51 PM

He may have actually thought this person existed and maybe even thought he was in SOME type of relationship, but there is no question that he a) painted a picture to the media of a far more serious relationship than actually existed or b) allowed the media to and didn’t stop them.

I read a couple of the pieces written about him and there is no way in heck that ANYONE could have read them and come to the conclusion that this is someone he only knew online.

Yes, you are being naive. Te’o said he met the woman, spent time with her, talked to her on the phone for hours on end, sent flowers to her funeral. The woman did not exist. None of the things he said happened occurred.

We read news stories daily about pathological liars. They lie because they are pathological. But a possible motive is the hope that a compelling story would ensure Te’o a Heisman win–improving his draft stock and increasing his NFL signing price.

    ________________________________

Yeah he met her online. He never said they met “in person.” And he talked to some girl on the phone for hours, just not the one he thought he was dating, but probably the one pretending to be her. And someone else behind all this probably told Manti that the funeral was at some certain place, so he sent flowers to it.

It’s not that hard to figure out. Like I already said, don’t you think the investigators would’ve figured out that Manti was behind it all if he really was? Just like the Melky Cabrera incident awhile back.

But some people like you are going to believe what you want because it makes you feel better to talk bad about other people. You want to believe that he was behind it all because it gives you a reason to talk bad about him. Gotta love our society…

Considering investigators have been looking into this for awhile I have a feeling he was duped. Remember he’s pretty young and could be shy and this was a way for him to open up to a woman. He was probably embarrassed that it was solely online and he lied about meeting her and what not. The hoaxer probably continued to drag things on and postpone meeting him but he was young n dumb and had feelings for her and convinced himself she was telling the truth, perhaps using the cancer story as an excuse “i look bad cause my cancer, I’m afraid to show you because you might not like me anymore” soooo possible. “They started out as just friends,” Brian Te’o said. “Every once in a while, she would travel to Hawaii, and that happened to be the time Manti was home, so he would meet with her there. But within the last year, they became a couple.”

Manti is a liar, not a victim.

  116. ubpinaz says: Jan 16, 2013 9:40 PM

He can prove he was the victim in a matter of seconds: phone records.

In an interview with ESPN in October, he stated on camera that he talked to her on the phone every night for 4 months. It has also been reported that he’d fall asleep on the phone, and wake up to see he had an 8-hour phone call and could hear her breathing on the other side.

Phone records prove his entire victim claim. It’s that simple.

This is not meant to be a comical post. I read the Deadspin article from start to finish and do not feel that the perpetuation of this hoax was originally done to generate publicity; this guy was a Mormon, attending a Catholic college and is a football player. I believe a matter of personal inclination on his part, in those three distinct circumstances, is incompatible, almost entirely. Instead of dealing with possible questions about why he, a star player on Notre Dame, is not seeing women on campus, a certain fiction was created as a cover story and it unfortunately got away from him and the other guy discussed in the Deadspin article. If what I theorize (and other commenters on Deadspin are as well) is true, I almost feel bad for the guy. Admitting it now could possibly derail his career more than it already has – pro athletes have not seemed overly accepting – see Tori Hunter’s comments recently.

Notre Dame just released a statement saying Te’o informed the school three weeks ago–when the story was about to break– that he was the victim of a hoax and the school is investigating. As far as I know, those are the only “investigators” involved. They haven’t released any conclusions one way or the other.

In criminal matters, I wait for evidence. But in a case like this, I’m looking at the contradictory statements made by Te’o and his father, as well as the fact that Te’o has a relationship with the guy running the fake Twitter accounts. No, it doesn’t make me happy when a football hero jerks around his fans. However, it thrills me to see the sports media caught with their pants down.

Manti, First I would like to say sorry about the loss of the love of your life, I know it is tough when you are in such a deep long term relationship, to lose such a big part of your life. Sometimes the best thing to do is jump back on the horse so to speak to get over tramatic life events. That being said, I am 6″2″ blonde hazel eyes, former swimsuit model, interested in some online chat possibly more? Maybe I can come meet you in person for cofee good chat? Please send $10,000 for plane ticket to hawaii, I will re-imburse you when I get there, you know taxes returns will be coming soon. Looking forward to hearing from you, SOrry again for your loss off the filed and on. It does help if you show up on the field, and off the filed relationships are a two way street, sounds like yours was a one way street, next time read the signs. Lol WOW What a crazy sotry , great timing, guess Karma really can be a B%&@#!

At first I had the same reaction–he was in on it. Now though I’m starting to believe that he just embellished the extent of the relationship, saying they’d met several times etc., so as not to come off as weird for having an online relationship. But he truly thought she was real and was not in on a scheme to fake her death in order to generate sympathy.

That all said, I wouldn’t want my team to draft Te’o…

I say 3rd round draft pick after horrible play in BCS championship and after all this…

I met my wife on Facebook and brought her here from Chile! One look at her and you will see why I went thru the trouble to marry her to keep her here!! if manti did get played the fool like that that sucks and has to be heart breaking thinking someone you loved died and then finding out it was all a prank!!!!

one question tho didn’t he go to her funeral or talk with her family when she “died”????? seems kind of weird he just takes it as she is dead and doesn’t reach out to his gf family and attend a funeral!!!!

I wonder if he is letting this come out now bc he wants to drop to a playoff team!!!! I hope the redskins can land him and te Tyler efiert and trade away that joke Fred Davis!!! HTTR

  149. myosin10 says: Jan 16, 2013 11:58 PM

I don’t know. People do this all the time, fake Facebook accounts. I have met a couple girls online who turned out to be fake. Although I can’t say it took more than a couple weeks to figure it out! I want to know how long this relationship was going on and did he say he met her or was there any statements from him that they actually went out?

Also I understand the sympathy votes but if he did make this up he had to know that someone would figure it out. Especially once she was supposedly dead. I just don’t see how he could have not realized people would figure it out. That makes me think he got punked. Although there is people out there that are pathological liars.

If he did make this up that’s a huge red flag about his character and mental stability!!! Can u imagine the locker room once he is on a pro team. They will make fun of him his entire career!

Notre Dame did more than cover it up, they were complicit. Any halfway credible media hack would have exercised their due diligence to confirm the girlfriend’s death, and not simply take Te’o at his word. They knew that whole sob story would fuel the Heisman talk (which, let’s face it, is 2/3 of the reason he was even invited as a finalist OVER that kid from Georgia) and I’m sure it also played a role in the eyes of the voters who somehow looked past the Stanford debacle and that ridiculously esoteric “pass interference” called against Pitt on Tyler Eifert, when Pitt was up 20-6 midway through the 4th; a game that Notre Dame was on their way to losing and made this #1 ranking as fraudulent as Te’o is.
