Chargers hire Ken Whisenhunt as offensive coordinator

AP

Two and a half weeks after he was fired as head coach of the Cardinals, Ken Whisenhunt has found a new job.

Whisenhunt is the new offensive coordinator of the Chargers, ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported and PFT has confirmed.

In San Diego, Whisenhunt will work for new head coach Mike McCoy, formerly the offensive coordinator of the Broncos. And Whisenhunt will not have to deal with the frequent quarterback controversies that bubbled up for him in Arizona: In San Diego, everyone knows Philip Rivers is the starter.

This will be Whisenhunt’s second stint as an NFL offensive coordinator, having previously coordinated the Steelers’ offense from 2004 to 2006. He has also been an assistant with the Jets, Browns and Ravens.

  1. I’m a Whisenhunt fan. He’s a good offensive mind. At least, when there is talent around.

    Good hire by Chargers.

  2. And things just keep getting worse for my raiders!. . .everyone else is taking care of business n they’re M.I.A

  3. If Rivers can’t break out of his slump with Whiz and McCoy as his coaches it’s basically hopeless for him to ever be a great qb again

  4. Was taking a major wait and see approach, but I have to admit, I like the Mccoy hire, and i REALLY like the Wis hiring.

If the new GM can rebuild the line through the draft and FA the Chargers could be a wild card contender sooner than i would’ve guessed

Why is the Cardinal on his hat flying in a different direction than the Cardinal on his shirt?”

It’s a representation for his coaching. He takes a team nowhere. For every 1 good decision Whiz made, it was always 2 bad decisions. The man is too stubborn to create a successful offense again. DC’s figured out his system and he is too stubborn to adjust because “The system worked when it got us to the superbowl” … With the guys Denny Green brought in… Hopefully McCoy has alot of input on the gameplans Whiz draws up.

  6. He was a decent play caller, absolutely horrible with personnel decisions. Cuts leinart and goes through 5 qbs before getting kolb whom is equivalent to leinart.

Hopefully he can resurrect Rivers like he did Warner.

(Todd Haley was the Off Coord in Arizona with Werner as QB.. often fighting with him. He (Haley) has see his ‘ways’ and is quite cool in Pittsburgh

  8. On one hand, I think it’s a good idea for a first time head coach to have someone with head coaching experience to help the transition. On the other, since McCoy is an offensive guy, would’ be expected that person to be more of a defensive specialist so McCoy can run his offense. Curious if their styles/philosophy’s will clash.

  9. I’m glad he got this job. If Jim Schwartz gets fired next year this is the guy I want to replace him.

  10. Sorry Charger fans, but Whisenhunt is a stranger to building good offensive lines as he demonstrated in fielding the worst offensive line each year for the past four years as graded out by the NFL.

With this hire, you get to look forward to being the cellar dwellers in the AFC West!

  11. Good thing he will have no part in putting together the offensive line. I think they hired a guy named Tolesco, you know the GM who’s job is to build the line…not the O coord. Looks like we wont be cellar dwellers after all.

  12. Congrats to Whis! And truths4all, Whisenhunt has a Super Bowl ring as an offensive coordinator, which is more than I can say for the OCs in Denver, Oakland, and Kansas City. So if the Chargers are “cellar dwellers” in the AFC West, it won’t be because of their offensive coordinator.

  13. That’s great! Whiz is a great OC.

More conservative than Mularkey but willing to take the right risks in the RZ.

    Good hire.

  14. Because if there was one thing the Cards were great at, it was offense. Didn’t they go 7 straight games without a td pass this year? Didn’t he give the starting QB job to John Skelton at the beginning of the season – a guy who shouldn’t even be in the Arena League? Good luck, Chargers. You’ll need it.

  15. The Steelers’ offense hasn’t been the same since Whisenhunt left after the 2006 season. He was in the process of molding Roethlisberger into a top-tier quarterback, evident by Roethlisberger’s mesmerizing three-game performances in the 2005 AFC postseason.
The fact that Roethlisberger no longer is “friendly” with Whisenhunt speaks volumes about how how hard Roethlisberger was pushed by his OC during the first three years of his career.
It’s no surprise that Roethlisberger formed a love affair with Bruce Arians as the offense declined and the quarterback became less productive.

  16. I think it’s a good signing especially since it means Mccoy can oversee everything and not be the primary play caller. They can also collaborate as 2 offensive minds are better than 1.

It signifies his goal of a 8-8 season. SD is doomed, Rivers will throw picks no matter who tells him to throw. That o-line is more than one draft away from acceptable.

  18. don’t be suprised if rivers flourishes with Mccoy & whiz. idk bout the D. but the offense could be good. whis is an outstanding coach and really got the best out of Ben rozenbagger so if I were a bolt fan id be happy pappy….but I’m not I’m a stinkin steeler fan and we have no running game were losing mike “60 minute wallace” harrison & woodley are on milk cartons colbert will not franchise keen lewis and we will prob lose him. yeah nobody cares about our problems

  19. Die hard broncos fan here and I hate the chargers but I have to admit the firing of turner finally along with the hiring of McCoy and wisenhunt are good moves they just need players now I expect the charger to be much better 9-7 or 10-6.

  21. It’s funny how when you say something good about the dolts you get more thumbs up, say something bad, you get mostly thumbs down. Well I’m gonna be the bad guy here, whizccoy are soon to find out that there’s nothing they Could do about rivers decision making and they still won’t be able to fix that oline overnight. This thing will blow up faster than you dolt fan can say Super Bowl contenders. You fans have high hopes, I’m gonna predict another bitter 7-9 dissapointed season.
