Reggie McKenzie dismisses idea of moving Darren McFadden

Raiders General Manager Reggie McKenzie met the media on Thursday for the first time since the end of the regular season and he was greeted with plenty of questions about his team’s offense.

Running back Darren McFadden was a topic of particular interest. McKenzie was asked about whether or not the team would consider moving McFadden before next season, the last one on his current contract.

“I’m confident Darren’s going to play his last season, regardless of what’s out there,” McKenzie said, via Jerry McDonald of the Bay Area News Group. “We have no decision to do anything with Darren.”

McFadden had 707 yards and averaged 3.3 yards per attempt this season, a drop in production that’s been attributed to both an ankle injury and a poor fit in former offensive coordinator Greg Knapp’s zone blocking system. McKenzie seemed to hint at the latter while talking about McFadden’s year.

“It’s obvious Darren is much better on certain types of plays,” McKenzie said. “That goes without saying. That’s how you’ve got to do it.”

McKenzie said the team is closing in on a new offensive coordinator. They spoke to both Marc Trestman and Norv Turner about returning to Oakland before the men took other jobs and have interviewed Mike Martz for the position.

  1. This is a big mistake. McFadden can;t stay healthy for an entire season, and he is in the last year of his contract. Further, the team doesn’t have a 2nd round pick in the draft so there’s three good reasons to trade him to some willing sucker. This team isn’t one player away from competing. Were it me, I’d try to trade down from the 3 spot in the 1st rd and pick up more picks. Then I’d try to move DMC for a 2nd if I could get it. The cupboard is bare and its time to restock the shelves. Plenty of RB’s can be had in the later rounds or in FA. Sir Pork McKenzie needs to move McFragile while he still can.

  2. As a fan im glad they at least tried to sign Norv turner and not a no name coach with little to no credited experience. . .but we still have to wait n c who they’re going to get

  3. I think they should try and move Mcfadden. They can still get good value for him and they need a lot. Mcfadden and Palmer just aren’t what the raiders need right now, move them both for picks and start completely over. Manning and the broncos are gonna rule that division for two more years anyways.

  4. When it comes to the Raiders, even if McFadden can only stay healthy for 8 games a season…those are games that they couldn’t come close to winning without him. Trade McFadden and this team will have no viable threat on offense.

  5. It would be a mistake to totally change the offense AGAIN this off season. They should hire Morninweg (sp?) or Shurmur to try for some continuity. The big issue with this team is talent not coaching.

  6. Not a coaching issue? As a Raider Fan…I Highly Disagree. This is essentially the same team that swept the division in 2011. Now comes in the new Coaches and new staff and out go the players that made that success happen.

If so many RBs can be had in later rounds, who would pay a 2nd round pick for “McFragile”? Remember, if you think he should be traded, why do you think anyone else wants him?

  8. @bambamraider

I guess you forgot about Marcel Reece. Reece had MUCH better production in Knapp’s offense than McFragile. Long-term, Reece will have a more productive career than McFragile.

    @helloanybodyhome

You forgot to add McFragile’s receiving touchdowns into the mix. He’s a pretty good pass catcher out of the backfield nowemasayin?

  9. @narfm0012

I qualified my response by saying “if” they could get a 2nd round pick for him. Someone will give up more than they should for him simply because they will *think* that they can get more out of him than the Raiders did. Admittedly, he is explosive and is effective when he is healthy and in the right system. That being said, there ARE plenty of stud RB’s in the later rounds of the draft, and were I a GM, I’d steer clear of him. As you know, Al Davis frequently gave up high draft picks for washed-up players, and he isn’t alone in doing so.

  10. Many teams would be sucked into wanting McFadden and would be willing to give up high draft picks. Marcel Reece is no slouch

  11. No, it’s not a coaching issue. The reason they won more AFC West division games last year is the empty QB spot in Denver filled by some guy named Manning.

Furthermore, going 6-0 in a weak division one time and 2-8 outside of it doesn’t point to incredible coaching. Just shows you have a weak division.

  12. Yeah he’s made out of glass but sadly he’s our best running back so if Reg can find a decent OC that will fit our players then we should just play out the year.. That’s just my opinion

  13. Everyone’s replaceable, especially running backs in today’s NFL. Get what you can for him while you can, at best he has 4 years left as a starter.

New England let Benjarvus Green-Ellis walk and the younger guys have filled the void quite nicely.

  14. The o line and the secondary is suspect. Hurry and fix it people. Its not that hard to build a well oiled machine.

  15. The Patriots have Tom Brady, anyone else on the team, coach or players look better when you have a great qb. Notice how the teams with great quarterbacks always have the smartest coaches and executives & every player they draft must be a great player….?

  16. Coming off a 700 yrd season isn’t going to exite many teams to give much for him. I don’t think Oakland could get enough to make it worthwhile.

  17. In reality if Star, and Luke are off the board when we draft, we should take Warmack. Probably by far the safest pick in the draft. Nothing sexy about it, but if we get a first and goal on the one again , we won’t be settling for field goals, or have the inability to convert on 3rd down , and 4th down plays with one to go. This guy can move the pile. DMC will benefit with a new LG, and RT.

Another consideration, since we have 22 UFA’s, is to place the tag on Lechler. Instead of paying him 4 million per season, a tag would save a couple million per season.. He is still one of the best.

  18. You gotta buy low and sell high

Trading DMac now would be selling low. Who is going to give more than a 4th or 5th rounder for his contract and injury history?

If he had stayed healthy last year and looked dominant in the 2nd half then it may have been possible to get someone like Jerry Jones to bite for a high pick.

  19. @bambamraider: You can highly disagree until you are blue in the face but the fact is that this years team had significantly less talent than last years. Last years team was full of bloated contract given to talented (but not THAT talented) players. The first thing Reggie did was to gut the roster of those players …and there was a lot of them. There is no quick fix for this team. Your best option is to have some continuity, draft well and stop giving out ridiculous contract. Give it three years and you may actually have a decent rebuild but until then you can’t just churn coaches constantly, it doesn’t help players develop.

  20. If both the DT from Utah, and the OT from A7M are off the board we should take the OG from Alabama. DMC would benefit from an improved O-line .

Also with 22 UFA’s that the raiders have this year, they might want to consider placing the tag on Lechler. Raiders would save a couple million, and also keep one of the if not the best punter in the nfl.

  21. Goodson didn’t have a lot of carries, but can tote the rock. His yards after contact are stout. Reece proved that he can also do that job. If they could get something for McFadden they should-and probably would-move him, but they can’t trade him for a second day pick. He can run, block, and catch, and if they give him away and he has a good season somewhere else, McKenzie will never hear the end of it.

  22. No one will give anything for this bust.

May as well keep him and enjoy his 5 or 6 games a season of marginal production.

I remember faid fans thought he was better than Jamaal Charles. lol

In two games against the Raiders this season Charles had 14 carries for 14 yards. Now that’s funny!

  25. McFadden has shown that he’s basically useless. Occasionally he looks like Bo Jackson but mostly he’s looked like Harvey Williams.

This would be a non-issue if our 2012 salary cap situation hadn’t forced the Raiders to let Michael Bush to move last spring. Bush was the best RB on the team and I always thought he was superior to McFadden.

  26. Greg Knapp is a Bronco hahhahah. Mcfadden is our best player why would we trade him? Hopefully AL Saunders is calling the players next season and All the DMAC haters will go back in there holes. “Mcfragile” its cause he runs downhill like a bull. And he s a little bigger and willing to rake a hit for more yardage unlike these other guys who get down right away. Marcel is good but hes more of a A3rs down back. Big reg knows what he s doing i trust in reg

We remember you running your mouth early about how good the Queefs were going to be. And we remember when you went running into your bedroom to hide before the season was half over. And now you’re back, pretending that 2-14 embarrassment never happened. You should change your handle to “chknsht”.
