All Deadspin uncovered was that she wasn’t real. Seems like the more important question is was Te’o in on the hoax. If not, that’s it. Is it a story that he might be embarrassed by all this? Not really.

If he says he used the word “met” to cover up it being an online relationship, I believe it. Why take “met” so litterally that it has to be a ftf meeting. Or saying she’s “beautiful” has to imply that too, like there’s no photos or profile pics on the web. If he was trying to pass it off as a ftf meeting to cover up it NOT being ftf, that’s actually very believable, and I don’t get why someone would not understand lying about that.

further, isnt it a little strange to people that he is getting more heat than when Pacman supposedly orchestrated a shooting in vegas, or just recently when Talib was accused of shooting at someone??? Why did deadspin even look into this in the first place? why are they using a source they wont name as saying he was 80% sure he was involved as fact?? guess its guilty until proven innocent these days..
PS Colin Klein never kissed his wife until they married..some are more devoutly religious than others, and premarital sex isnt in the cards for them…my best friend growing up, whos now an minister, is the same way.

Based on what’s come out so far, I believe Te’o was part of this hoax. It’s hard to get around the story of their meeting at a game and how their eyes locked so soulfully. But as others have said, no crime was committed. The episode made Notre Dame and the sports press look like gullible fools and calls Te’o's character into serious question. That’s it. Better to drop the whole thing now and move on than to keep digging a deeper hole.

For those who think no crime has been committed, how much fundraising took place because of this fake girlfriend’s death? How many people were moved to give money to Notre Dame because of this bogus story? Why did Notre Dame allow the CBS story to air before the National Championship game knowing it was all a fraud? The AD said in his press conference that he did not know about the CBS story. So we are suppose to believe that a major network was doing a story on their star player before the National Championship game but the AD new nothing about it? Please. I’m not saying fundraising was the motive behind this scam, but I’m not sure that matters. Wire fraud anyone? How about mail fraud? This story is going to lead to the downfall of the Notre Dame AD. You heard it hear first folks.

Good lord, I bet this is nothing at all. It’s all hype to get things going before the draft. It’s probably all very innocent.

My guess, is that he really was duped into believing he had a real relationship with somebody over the internet. Then, he found out he had been duped after a fake death claim. These are just big kids, everybody needs to take it easy. He’s probably just super embarrassed by everything and had hoped it would never come out. Even the part about “meeting her”. Big deal… he probably was brutally embarrassed and made that up to save face, thinking it would never come back to haunt him.

In the end, I bet it’s as simple as a guy being embarrassed about being duped, then lying about the situation because of it. Like no guy has ever done that before…smh

Or “she” could have changed “her” number now that the story is out there. Phone records wouldn’t really prove/disprove much anyways as far as people determining whether Te’o is guilty or not.

the major reason why the press is paying so much attention to this story is because they were ALL lazy and failed to do their jobs! ESPN has become a hype machine for sports and the general news media expected that the sports guys vetted the story before allowing it on air.

it’s really interesting that ND has decided to do damage control, which makes me wonder what hand they played in the scenario.

This is so easy for Manti to prove his innocence. He says he spoke to the girl posing as his girlfriend everyday up till she “died”. Produce her phone number for people to investigate and find the girl behind the hoax. If he does not do that, then he is completely behind the hoax and is the new douche of the media.
