Andre Smith arrested in Atlanta

AP

Bengals tackle Andre Smith is set to become a free agent in March if he doesn’t work out a deal with the team or get the franchise tag.

He may have some legal issues to sort through while trying to secure his football future, however. WCPO-TV is reporting that Smith was arrested in Atlanta Thursday for allegedly trying to bring a gun onboard an airplane.

Atlanta police say that Smith tried to board an airplane at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport with a .380 caliber handgun among his belongings. Smith was in court on Friday and got released on a $3,000 bond.

Smith, a 2009 first-round pick, turned in his strongest NFL season in 2012. While the arrest could lead to discipline from the NFL, it’s likely that he’ll still be a prized commodity if he hits the open market.

  1. In this day and age you think people would be smart enough NOT to try and board a plane with a gun.

    What a moron!!!

  2. At what point of packing to get on a plane did it seem like a good idea to put your handgun in your bags?

  3. well he is a bengal, and you cant be a bengal without being arrested at least once. that goes for tyhe lions too

  4. Seriously. What is it about teams like the Bengals and Lions? Do they have a subconscious desire to sign morons or do they just breed stupid in those organizations?

  5. I’m having trouble understanding why someone would even consider putting a handgun in their luggage. Let him be a hot commodity on the market. Cut him now.

  6. NFL really needs to start offering a gun toting service similar to the “call a cab” program that all of the millionaires have access too. You know, to help the young men stay out of trouble. Ha-yuck, Ha-yuck.

  7. It’s a good day for anyone who had Andre Smith in their respective “dumb enough to try and bring a gun on a plane” pool.

If you had Plaxico Burress, or Rolondo McClain: close but better luck next time.

  8. Not the “brightest bulb” in the NFL.

Maybe he is auditioning for the annual
    “Village Idiot” award

Hey moron, do a google search and look at the nfl arrests database…..you will be surprised at where the Lions are ranked…..smh

  10. 6’4 and 335 pounds with a smile like that!?

Nobody wants to piss you off, Andre. Leave the gun at home.

  11. Congrats Andre you just joined the ranks of the epically stupid. There is no chance that a person doesn’t know that you can’t bring a gun onto a plane. I hope he pulled the “don’t you know who I am.”

“He tried to pass himself off as Brandon Marshall’s brother Air Marshall.”

Made my day with that one!

  13. Wow as a passionate Bengals fan this is embarrassing..Just when he was having a decent season this dude does the dumbest shish in the world….Well we cant go on forever without an arrest…LOL Overall 99% of our team lives positive lifestyles… Wonder if we let him walk or we sign him back at a discount due to the arrest…stay tuned

  14. It is alot easier than one might think.

I packed in the dark one morning… grabbed a bag and threw some stuff in it for a short weekend flight up the coast. Did not realize it but my 25.cal beretta was under a fold in the bottom of the bag from a previous trip by car.

I only found it cause I accidently dropped my keys in the bag and had to fish for them.

  15. As a Bengals fan — let him go. Right tackles are fairly replaceable, especially ones this stupid.

  16. They’ll franchise him if he doesn’t agree to an extension. No one else on the team is worth franchising, that is going to be a free agent. They could use the restricted tender on him as well, where they have the right to match, or get the other teams 1st round pick.

  17. isn’t this the guy who had his double d tits flopping around when he ran before the draft?
I wouldn’t trust a guy with a long contract who was that out of shape at such a crucial time.

  18. I am pretty sure you can travel with your registered pistol. You probably have to declare that you want to bring it with you, answer why, and fill out some paper work for it. Probably a free service and takes like 10 minutes. Nope, gotta wrap it in some dirty drawers and try and be sneaky. What a clown.

  19. The ridiculous (“he must be a Bengal….”)comments are old and stale.
Every team in the NFL has to deal with these fools getting themselves in trouble with the law. It’s not a Bengals or Lions problem, its a league-wide problem.
I don’t pretend to know how to fix the issue, but lets stop picking on the Bengals. I’m pretty sure your favorite team has these types as well.
    Good job Andre..you’re a moron!

  20. Pick the most likely excuse:
    1. My little sister put it there.
    2. I thought this was a subway ride.
    3. There’s always room for jello.
    4. It’s not my gun.
    5. All of the above

Sigh Bengals hardly ever have an issue since Odell Thurman and chris Henry. Move on…. It’s the Lipns and Steelers time now

Riiiiiiiggggghhhhhht. Can you say, “Rey Maualuga”, kids? Sure you can.

Smith has never been known for his intelligence–or his diligence–or his excellence. In other words, a typical Bagels player. Mike Brown drafted him knowing his character issues, now he’ll claim he was surprised by this turn of events.

    What a schmuck.

  22. I don’t know, but maybe he’s done this many times before and always had no issues. He’s an athlete. Not hard to imagine he feels the need for protection. Blacks. Never know who else might have a gun.

Yes, I can say Rey Maualuga. I can also say that unlike Odell and Henry, he’s only been arrested twice. And he’s likely gone come March. What’s your team? I guarantee you have a player with 2 arrests.
