Dean Pees on stopping Brady: Hire Tonya Harding

Ravens defensive coordinator Dean Pees is very familiar with Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

He’s been part of the defensive staff in Baltimore for the last three seasons, which has meant three matchups with the Patriots, and he spent four years as the defensive coordinator in New England before moving down the Eastern Seaboard. That’s given him a lot of time to study Brady and come up with an answer for the best way to slow him and the rest of the Patriots offense down.

“Hire Tonya Harding,” Pees said, via NESN.com. “If they were getting off the bus, I’d spray water outside the bus and hope it freezes.”

It’s a good line, albeit one Bette Midler might not find so amusing. And we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out a missed opportunity to reintroduce the name Jeff Gillooly into the national conversation.

We aren’t expecting to see a shot Sunday of Tom Brady wailing about his knee in a hallway Nancy Kerrigan-style, although it would certainly make for an unforgettable image. Brady had a good game in the team’s regular season matchup, but the Ravens won 31-30. One way they helped grab victory was limiting the Patriots’ run game to 77 yards, their lowest total of the season thus far.

If the Ravens can come up with a similar effort this time around, it would do a lot to help their chances of winding up in the Super Bowl. Maybe not as much as a nightstick to Brady’s knee, but we’d rather see a straight up football game.

The replacement refs were another way that helped the Ravens grab victory int hat game.

Or just follow the Giants game plan…

Which one? The “hope we get lucky and Wes Welker will drop the game winning pass” one?

  3. Take your pick in the last 3 times giants beat the pats IN A ROW. that includes Two Superbowls We own the pats no excuses please it beneath you guys. or maybe not

  4. I’m sure Suggs will do his best to wreck Brady’s knee as it seems every Raven’s game he takes a dive at Brady’s knees and then he carries on and protests like it’s the first time he has heard it is no longer allowed in the NFL.

In fact I’m sure he will look quite similiar to the posted picture of Harding.

Brady is soft. Joe Flacco is more durable and has a bigger arm. Ravens roll, win by at least ten pts

  6. Aqib Talib doesn’t have anything to do with setting the edge when Pierce is in the game. The Pats LBs consistently let Pierce turn the corner in week 3. And if the same happens this Sunday, it won’t matter what CBs the Pats acquired after that game.

Pats run man coverage engaging their LBs on their TEs and slot guys. You starting attacking the edges with the run and your LBs get paranoid, leaving the intermediate routes in the middle of the field wide open.

People are concentrating on the wrong guys in this game. It’ll be the Pierce’s, Boldins, Pittas, Dicksons and Hightowers, Spikes and Mayos that determine the outcome of this one.

  7. Wonder what excuses the patriot fans and steeler fans will make after this week. Ravens are going to the superbowl. It’s destiny. Cheers!

If this wasn’t tongue in cheek, I’d advise you to go read a book about football, specifically match-ups and how they change a game plan.

I don’t think Bette Midler has anything to do with Tonya Harding. I believe fellow skater Nancy Kerrigan was on the wrong end of the stick to the knee.

Interesting post, but not as simple as you’d paint it, imo. Sub-packages change this. Chung (or Gregory), for instance, can cover the TE’s which has allowed Mayo to attack the QB more this year. There are other factors. The playbook for a lot of young guys has opened up on offense. O-Line being healthy should really help. It was a very new team when we first met. I’m hoping for a good game.

Wonder if you will be here to face the music after you loose?….By the way, I will be here is we loose

  12. Reed20fence,

Intermediates for flacco wont matter. Short passes for flacco wont matter. If you havent noticed, he only has one trick…now, it’s a helluva trick, but its only one.

Stop the deep ball to the right side (usually smith), stop flacco.

  13. I wouldn’t wish any injury on any player, but I was thinking this morning about how crazy it would be if the Pats beat the Ravens, but Brady suffered an injury to keep him out of the Super Bowl. The Pats would have to turn to Ryan Mallett for his first career start in the Super Bowl.

Again, I don’t wish injury on anyone, but that would make the drama around this year’s Super Bowl INSANE…

Stay tuned around 10pm Sunday night as “soft” Brady hoist AFC championship trophy.

  15. ravenator says: Brady is soft.

I love clowns who say Brady is “soft’, as if you can play QB for a championship team for 12 years and be soft. LOL

  16. Shouldn’t the answer have been Shawn Eckardt? He’s the one who cracked Kerrigan’s knee not Tonya Harding or even Jeff Gillooly.

Or he one where Eli threw it up for grabs 3 times on the last drive… and on 3rd down and long … the famous helmut catch.

  18. Why are steeler fans talking? What room do you have to say anything negative about a team in the AFC Championship? I suppose that 8-8 record was the only thing in your way. At the end of the day, we all know your jealous as you wish it was your team in our position, but its not, cheers!

3 3 This steeler fan is talking because I have seen six not one but six Super Bowl seasons therefore I feel more than qualified to talk about your stupid comments as they appear daily on every thread there is. You don’t have a grasp on football reality..now is ok but several years of now is legendary. Sit on moms knee and she can explain that to you…cheers and yikes

  20. Ravenator, Steeler fans are talking because there is this little thing called freedom of speech. It doesn’t matter if the Steelers had zero wins in a season, people have a right to voice their opinion. If you can’t handle the right to freedom of speech don’t read anymore comments.

  21. Jesus I’m tired of hearing the 6 rings. It’s been through a 46 year span!! And thats only if you count since they’ve been in the afc! remember you started in the 1930’s and didn’t win a damn thing until the 70’s

  22. Thanks duece for some sanity.

Not to mention that it’s a game, and none of us were on those teams to win it. Our only claim to our teams are where our mothers happened to birth us, or where our parents were arbritrarily destined to raise us, or worse yet, the random reason we happened to like a team half way across the country.

They claim 6 titles. Well Baltimore has many titles as well. But because they moved, poof, somehow those dont count. And then Baltimore had another teamsince 96. Since then theyve won 1, and Pittstain has won 2. No sense counting anything from before, since one of the teams didnt exist. Right?

It’s all arbitrary nonsense. Just shutup and enjoy the entertainment.
