APWhen Rex Ryan took over as Jets coach, he made some big promises about bringing a Lombardi to Gang Green.
He hasn’t had much luck securing the trophy, so he’s trying another route. Multiple reports indicate the Jets interviewed Saints quarterbacks coach Joe Lombardi for their vacant offensive coordinator job this week. Lombardi is the grandson of Vince Lombardi, whose name has been slapped on the trophy given to the Super Bowl winner each season.
Lombardi has been with the Saints since 2007 and has been the quarterbacks coach since 2009. It should go without saying that a move to the Jets would leave Lombardi with a lot less to work with at quarterback.
Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the team is also interviewing former Browns head coach Pat Shurmur for the job on Friday. Shurmur was the offensive coordinator for the Rams before getting the top job in Cleveland, which he lost after going 9-23 over two seasons. Shurmur’s also drawn interest from the Panthers for the offensive coordinator job that came open when the Browns hired Rob Chudzinski to replace Shurmur.

How many “Lombardis” are there in the NFL??
Mike Lombardi is now the GM for da bears and now this???
Joe likes to wear his grandfather’s trademark shade cap and Under Armor shirt on the sideline.
Fans might sue the team if the Jets pair one of the least dynamic offensive units with one of the least dynamic offensive minds (Shurmur) in the NFL.
That would truly be an unwatchable offensive product.
I think the Jets can do better than Pat Shurmur. Heck, I’d take Mornheinweg over Shurmur.
So, another assistant coach for the Saints could get lured away from the team while Rodger Goodell’s draconian punishment for Sean Payton keeps him away from the team and unable to get his coaching staff in order. First Aaron Kromer, now this. Pathetic.
its not gonna matter who is OC as long as Rex is running the circus
The Jets should hire Lombardi because that is the only Lombardi that the Jets will see for the next decade.
Matt Flynn.
First the Jets trade up with the Browns for Sanchez… Now they want Shurmur.
Must say I do enjoy hearing about a team even dumber than my Browns.
