When Rex Ryan took over as Jets coach, he made some big promises about bringing a Lombardi to Gang Green.
He hasn’t had much luck securing the trophy, so he’s trying another route. Multiple reports indicate the Jets interviewed Saints quarterbacks coach Joe Lombardi for their vacant offensive coordinator job this week. Lombardi is the grandson of Vince Lombardi, whose name has been slapped on the trophy given to the Super Bowl winner each season.
Lombardi has been with the Saints since 2007 and has been the quarterbacks coach since 2009. It should go without saying that a move to the Jets would leave Lombardi with a lot less to work with at quarterback.
Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the team is also interviewing former Browns head coach Pat Shurmur for the job on Friday. Shurmur was the offensive coordinator for the Rams before getting the top job in Cleveland, which he lost after going 9-23 over two seasons. Shurmur’s also drawn interest from the Panthers for the offensive coordinator job that came open when the Browns hired Rob Chudzinski to replace Shurmur.
