Manti Te’o: I lied to my dad “to avoid all the questions”

As he continues to insist that he wasn’t involved in a hoax and really believed he was in an online relationship with a woman named Lennay Kekua, Manti Te’o admits he lied at times to make people think he had met Lennay in person.

ESPN has posted what it describes as an edited transcript of Te’o’s conversation with Jeremy Schaap, and in it Te’o acknowledges falsely telling people that he had face-to-face meetings with Lennay.

One of those people Te’o lied to was his dad. Te’o said that while he was staying with his parents in Hawaii, he set up a meeting with Lennay. Lennay didn’t show (obviously, because she didn’t exist), but instead of telling his dad the truth about that, Te’o told his dad that the meeting went as planned.

“So when I got home, dad asked, hey, did you get to see her? And to avoid all the questions, I just said ‘yeah, dad, I saw her,'” Te’o told Schaap.

Te’o told Schaap that was the only time he lied to his parents about meeting Lennay. But that doesn’t square with what Te’o’s dad told the South Bend Tribune, which is that the first time they met was at Stanford when Te’o was there for a game. Te’o claims he doesn’t know where that story came from.

Te’o is far from the first 21-year-old to lie to his parents about the people he was spending time with, but he did, in fact, lie. And he admitted to Schaap that he lied to other people about having met Lennay in person as well. Te’o called that “my biggest regret.”

Although Notre Dame said it launched an investigation when Te’o told his coaches on December 26 that he had learned of the hoax, Te’o says that other than asking for a picture of “Lennay,” Notre Dame’s investigator never interviewed him. Which means that the off-camera questions from Schaap are the most thorough questions Te’o has yet faced.

Te’o should be ready for a slew of questions from NFL teams in the weeks ahead.

Wow….the way Te’o tells it seems like the girl that was in on it just couldnt do it anymore. She started to fall in love with him!! This once again proves that if any of you guys have a plan, do not allow a woman to get involved because their emotions will get in the way and ruin everything……

  9. seanx40 says: Jan 19, 2013 2:19 PM

Manti, just SHUT UP. You are only costing yourself money at this point. Shut up now, and people will mostly forget by late April.

  10. WatchThis says: Jan 19, 2013 2:19 PM

Nah, it’s totally believable. What normal person would admit to having a totally online relationship? If anything, it shows Te’o’s normality to not want to admit to that. Getting caught up in one isn’t difficult either. Give the guy a break. A whole lotta people around here just don’t have a base level common sense about how people work.

  11. killitandeatit says: Jan 19, 2013 2:20 PM

I think Notre Dame is in over its head, pretty clear now the university is doing major damage control. Not sure who is lying to who but now Notre Dame University is starting to sound like they were/are part of the lies.

I just hope this latest interview is clean because there is laser focus attention on this by thousands of people. This is a modern day who done it ? There are interviews there are real live people and they will talk. As I have said to more than one individual : “you better get your story straight”.

Let’s point out that as of now, Notre Dame did nothing wrong.

But it’s downright embarrassing that fans of that program are running around believe Te’o is now somehow vindicated.

If anything, he became even more sketchy.

  20. pjhurley5 says: Jan 19, 2013 2:34 PM

The biggest problem, in my mind, is that Schapp really has no incentive to find and report the truth in this situation. He was hand picked by Te’o to convey his story, so he probably implicitly made some concessions as to how difficult the questioning would be. If what he reports ends up being uncovered as false, he has a convenient excuse to fall back on “well, he could have rehearsed his story and he has a history of lying…how was I supposed to know (he came across as genuine)?”

The issue of incentives comes up because Schapp then, based on those incentives, has no reason to submit Te’o to (a) rigorous questioning or (b) questioning in such a manner that could uncover a discrepancy in his story. As to (a), all of the questions that have been reported can have easily-rehearsed answers. As to (b), our minds work in such a way that, logically, we are conditioned to interpret stories in a time-series (i.e., this occurred, then this occurred, then this occurred). This is because we live through events in this way (obviously). As a result, we are more easily able to construct lies in this manner. What ends up happening is you can come off as believable when someone asks you to recount the events in order (which seems to be Schapp’s approach). What he SHOULD have done is ask him to go backwards through the events or go through them in some other ordering, which is much more effective at uncovering the truth. Instead, he really had zero incentive to provide an accurate report given that if it really is the truth he gets credit for being the first one in on it and if it’s false he can fall back on the “well, he has lied and I couldn’t possibly know” excuse.

The fact that this situation is being so carefully handled makes me suspicious. If Te’o were genuinely innocent then he shouldn’t have a problem answering questions in a more uncontrolled format. The fact that Notre Dame didn’t even ask him any extensive questions, and took his character (which is the root of all of this) at face value, is laughable at best.

Te’o doesn’t owe it to anybody to comment, especially the media, who is upset that they all reported the story without checking their facts. If he does try to go to the NFL then he owes it to them to answer their questions as prospective employers. Other than that it is his business to talk or not.

If he slides.. a team is going to get an impact player. Say what you want about the BCS game but you cannot say that the d-line in front of him wasn’t, flat-out, handled.

Tape doesn’t lie. Point all you want at this most recent one; but it is just one. He is a 21yr. old college student that lied.. at least he didn’t lie about being behind the wheel of a car that wiped-out a family.

He can read offenses and line-up a team. That, my friends, is GOLD for a linebacker in the NFL because you can teach only to a point.. beyond that it is instinct and Te’o has a ton of it; just look at the tape.

  39. Deb says: Jan 19, 2013 3:24 PM

Two minor but key references in ESPN’s long transcript:

    1. Te’o mentions that Coach Brian Kelly is the one who told reporters about his dead girlfriend, which led to all those interviews and all that publicity about Te’o playing through tragedy. Te’o didn’t know the story was going public.

    2. When Te’o told the coach he suspected something wrong in the girl’s story, “Coach Kelly just said she’s dead. That’s how we’re going to go about it. She’s dead.” That would explain why both Te’o and Notre Dame continued to pretend the story was true after becoming aware of the hoax.

Te’o may well have been a dupe in all this. But Notre Dame clearly tried to exploit his personal “tragedy” to improve his Heisman chances. And when the school learned there was a problem with the story, they continued milking it in the media until Deadspin burst their bubble and they were forced to come clean.

An important lesson for those in the public eye is when you are caught lying you need to come out and tell the complete truth and more than likely you will be forgiven. It doesn’t seem like he is being 100% honest. Lets add up the facts: he has a long distant relationship with a girl he never meets for several years, he is a Mormon, he attends a catholic college, and he plays football. It seems like he is trying to hide his true feelings. Maybe he is gay and is afraid to be honest. Hopefully, no matter what the truth is, he will be able to be honest with himself.

    2. When Te’o told the coach he suspected something wrong in the girl’s story, “Coach Kelly just said she’s dead. That’s how we’re going to go about it. She’s dead.”

Seems Notre Dame was far more invested in selling Te’o’s personal tragedy to boost his Heisman chances than he was. And Notre Dame was determined to perpetuate the myth once the story started to unravel.

Hey Manti just be a man and admit you were part of the scam. He continues to keep adding fuel to the fire by twisiting new stories to cover lies he’s told in past that people can fact check. best thing he can do is say “hey my dumb buddy came up with this story to get me attention, I got caught up in the lie and didn’t want to cause a distraction during the season, I am very sorry for letting so many people down.” I just hope over time I can earn everyones trust”. Until he says something along those lines, he is going to be dragged over the coals by media, fans, etc. We’ll see wht this kid is really made of, right now I think teams won’t want anything to do with him simply because of the distraction he will cause whomever takes him. Of course a team like Cinnci, Detroit Etc. will pull the trigger in 2nd or thir round, because integrity, and character are not high on their player priority lists. Good luck Manti Hope you figure this out, and learn from your mistakes.

So why is he gonna tell a handpicked espn reporter the truth. (3) he is not a good person. If a friend (no less a girlfriend that I love) is in a coma I’m gonna visit her, if she is dying of cancer I’m going to visit her, if she passes away I’m GOING to the funeral, and he is supposed to be someone religious? The most over hyped story in years.

Schaap treated his interview like it was a deposition of a hostile witness.

Politicians lie us into war. No problem.

Bankers fudge underwriting and package bogus loans in AAA-rated securities. No problem.

Sports media fall for bogus story about college football player’s personal life. It’s treated as a national crisis.

I wish all of my exes were imaginary too, but I wish I had all the money back I spent on them.

If I had to make an educated guess, I’d say that Manti Te’o gets drafted by the Bengals — maybe in the 3rd or 4th round.

LB-Rey Malualuga doesn’t think that Cincy will re-sign him.

They take chances on questionable character dudes.

They drafted Vontaze Burflict in last year’s draft, and VB had a decent rookie season — and pretty much kept his nose clean.

I dont buy this story for a second. Youre going to tell me a star ftooball player cant find a girl on campus? Theres got to be like 10,000 girls at that school.

Also, in todays days of technology theres no way you he didnt physically see this girl. Skype, facetime on iphone are all out there. I dont buy it. I think hes gay and just doesnt want to say it. Not sure why who really cares these days anyway. Theres no way this guy is this dumb

To clarify…I never said Te’o owes me (or anybody else, really) anything. I merely stated that I didn’t think Schapp seemed intent on uncovering the truth, due to his incentives for reporting the story how he did. Further, Te’o should be the one interested in how this goes down because if he’s truly innocent then he should be doing anything he can to show his future employers (teams, sponsors, etc.) that he’s innocent. In my opinion, this carefully controlled interview was not the best way of doing that. Nothing less, nothing more…

It is not a big enough deal to matter. Who hasnt told a lie? Let alone a very ridiculous and small lie. You will see him Sundays. Go Irish.
