APWhat has been speculated for days is now official, as former Bears defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli has joined the Cowboys as defensive line coach.
The team announced the move, which was expected from the time Marinelli told new Bears coach Marc Trestman “it’s not you, it’s me.”
Marinelli spent 10 years as defensive line coach in Tampa Bay under new Cowboys defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin.
With the Cowboys shifting from a 3-4 to Kiffin’s Tampa 2, he’s going to need trusted help to teach the scheme, and there are few he has more background with than Marinelli.

Don’t be surprised if Ronde Barber signs with the Cowboys.
Mr. 0-16
Giving up on a top 5 defense in Chicago kind of lowers my perception of Miranelli as a leader and coach. Seems pretty soft to jump ship because your best buddy got axed.
Kiffin’s defense at USC gave up 394 yds and 24 points per game last year…that doesn’t bode well for the cowboys…but looks great for the rest of the NFC east.
I don’t get it. WHY would Marinelli leave his top 5 D like that? I know he was loyal to Lovie, but how about being Loyal to Peanut, Pepp, Briggs and all his boys on D? Marinelli is an awesome D-coord, and it took a while to build on the pieces for him in Chi. Why he would choose to leave for essentially a demotion to play for the biggest idiotic megalomaniac owner in the league boggles the mind.
Unless of course, Lovie is eying Dallas in 2014…
Its a shame. Marinelli was a good coach for the bears. Too bad he felt the need to leave. Dallas’ D will only benefit from Kiffin and his hiring.
Mel Tucker—kick some tail.
I like this move.
There is now so much defensive coaching excellence in Dallas that it is almost un-fair! One team should not be allowed to hire 2 great defensive coordinators!
Whats Going Under The Radar Is That Jerry Is Putting Together Jon Gruden’s Old Staff So He Can Make A Run At Him As Soon As Jason Garrett Botches Another Game Ending Possession. You Heard It Here first.
Considering the fact that monte and John had a bad split in Tampa I highly doubt these moves are for gruden . If Garrett is replaced it’ll be with mike holmgren or lovie smith
As much as I’d hate to see him in another uniform, I wouldn’t be shocked to see Brian Urlacher in Dallas next year. I don’t believe there is a better player out there to help teach the Tampa-2 as a coach on the field.
It still wont stop Dallas, or Jerrah’s face, from crumbling after yet another season of failure
As a lifelong Cowboy fan, who now watches at a distance due Jerrah’s antics, I just don’t see any big name coach like Gruden, Cowher, or Holmgren ending up there. It didn’t work with Parcells and if Jerrah wouldn’t let Bill shop for the groceries, why would any of the above want to work for that man?
There is a reason his list of HC’s reads like a WhoTF of the NFL: Barry Switzer, Chan Gailey, Dave Campo and Wade Phillips…they were the only guys willing to do things Jerrah’s way. And all it got is each of them fired. Only Gailey was ever a HC for another team, and we see how well that worked out for him in Buffalo.
lol…until garrett and or romo get replaced…dallas will be just avg, period. Look at history!
As long as Jerry Jones is around, the only thing with better job security than an undertaker is a washed up coach.
Jones is greasing the skids for Lovie Smith to come in mid season in 2013 if the Cowboys start out slow. Just watch, Jerry will do it!!
Head coach to defensive coordinator to defensive line coach. marinelli is the Peter Principle personified. He’s now back where he belongs, where he’ll do the most good.
All these negative comments about who Dallas is hiring means you guys are getting scared hehe
Love how people bring up 0-16 for Marinelli. He’s a great defensive coordinator who had a stud defense last year. Sorry, hate all you want, this is a strong move for Dallas.
How was his Detroit defense when he was head coach of that 0-16 team?
Marinelli’s a loser.
Xtb3,
How was the Bears defense the last three years smart guy? That’s what I thought.
Well written, as always.
I love how people judge head coaching jobs to coordinator skills. Wade Phillips isn’t a great coach but his deffenses when he is a coordinator are great. Norv turner not a great head coach but a phenomenal offensive coordinator. Marinelli is a great defensive coordinator not a great head coach and it doesn’t help when you coach the lions with Matt Millen as gm
Lovie will be the next hire in Dallas following the Jason Garrett firing that is soon to come. That will solidify the defensive side of the ball, but, comically, Jerry Jones will now be running the offense with Garrett out of the way and no offensive coordinator yet on board.
I don’t know what more evidence you need.
He’s going back to what he does well.Cheerlead for a qualified d-coordinator.Lovie was the brains no doubt about it. He was good before rod and will be good after rod no matter where he lands next year.

Scared of a Dallas team that has 1 playoff win in 16 years?…yep, you nailed it
I hate to say it, this is a great move for the Cowboys.
Look at what Marinelli did to develop Henry Melton and Corey Wooten, both of whom would be the the best players on Dallas’s line if they were there.
Marinelli is an outstanding teacher, and knows how to coach.
Marinelli always has gotten the best out of his DLine. ie Sapp and Rice. I see a lot of sacks for Ware

Owner / team president / GM I’m sure he’s got some spare time to take on the OC position too.
Preparing to be the next DC in Dallas. After the defense is installed and Kiffin walks away again, he’ll take over a team with a good/young LB corp.
I wouldn’t doubt this is a move to get Gruden next year and make him the highest paid coach in the NFL.
RM was not a very DC. He is a GREAT D line coach though.
As a Bears fan I loved what he did for the line. As a DC, not so much. I was sad to see him go but really happy we are getting away from the tampa cover zero defence. The tampa 2 defence only works against the mediocre QB’s like romo and stafford. The good QB’s will take the 7 yard plays all day long and win by 21.
Not to mention Dallas personal wise is not ready for the tampa 2

What. Sean Lee > Urlacher (at this stage in his career)…. Urlacher, if he left Chicago, would still be able to find a starting gig somewhere in the league I’m sure. That move would make no sense really.
I just want a HC I can root for. I want to ignore who the owner is and just root for the team I have followed since before Jerry Jones came along.
