Jets unlikely to add Michael Vick, may target Tarvaris Jackson

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Vick throws a forward pass against the Atlanta Falcons during the second quarter of their NFL football game in Philadelphia Reuters

When Marty Mornhinweg was named the Jets’ offensive coordinator, speculation immediately began that Michael Vick could be the next quarterback to join the Jets’ circus. But that does not appear likely.

Although Mornhinweg and Vick worked together for four years in Philadelphia, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Vick and Mornhinweg weren’t on great terms and wouldn’t want to work together again in 2013.

And anyway, the Jets are already bound to pay Mark Sanchez like a starter whether they want to or not, and they don’t want to add another expensive option, which Vick is likely to be, assuming he gets cut by the Eagles and becomes an unrestricted free agent. The New York Post reported that the Jets would be unlikely to make a move for Alex Smith of the 49ers or Matt Flynn of the Seahawks for the same reason: They’d be too expensive.

Still, the Jets do want someone who can compete with Sanchez. So who might that be? Schefter says new Jets G.M. John Idzik has always been a believer in Tarvaris Jackson, who was the Seahawks’ starter in 2011 while Idzik was Seattle’s V.P. of football administration. The Post also reported that Jackson could be a possibility with the Jets, as could Matt Moore, Jason Campbell or David Garrard.

Jets fans probably aren’t going to be excited about any of those names. Actually, Jets fans should probably just go ahead and resign themselves now to the fact that they won’t be excited about any of their quarterback options in 2013.

I think I speak for 30 other fan bases when I say thank God I don’t cheer for the Jets.

  2. britishraven says: Jan 20, 2013 12:42 PM

Just when you think their QB situation can’t get any worse

  3. cmr123 says: Jan 20, 2013 12:42 PM

    WHY?

  4. cletusvandam says: Jan 20, 2013 12:43 PM

Poor Jets fans. There is nothing worse than when you know your team isn’t even trying.

  5. rdirt says: Jan 20, 2013 12:44 PM

T-jax? Are you serious; do they need someone to raise Tebow’s self esteem?

  6. dkrauss93 says: Jan 20, 2013 12:44 PM

This is why I wanted Hue Jackson as OC. They can sign Cambell cheap and reunite the two. In Oakland before the Cambell injury, he was having a career year and was in 1st place in the division. If the Jets sign Jackson, it’s like having a black Tebow. A QB who can run, but not pass. It really does suck being a Jet fan.

“new Jets G.M. John Idzik has always been a believer in Tarvaris Jackson”

On the job less than a week and Idzik is already losing credibility. Sanchez competing with Jackson; what a lose lose situation that will be.

  9. bucfan4lyfe says: Jan 20, 2013 12:45 PM

    That’ll turn the franchise around.

  10. hor2012 says: Jan 20, 2013 12:46 PM

As a football fan this is really sad. Jets fan pay good money to go to games. And, all they get for thier troubles is another year with Mark S. As a Saints fan I thought we had it bad this year. But, damn the jets are in even worst shape then we were.

  11. brenenostler says: Jan 20, 2013 12:46 PM

In other words, Sanchez will be the 2013 starter.

  12. ogre2010 says: Jan 20, 2013 12:46 PM

    This team is joke!!

  13. ttommytom says: Jan 20, 2013 12:47 PM

Moore and Garrard are upgrades while Campbell and Jackson are perennial question marks.

Sanchez makes those 4 or 5 mistakes a game that just kill your team.

Doug Williams and Jim Plunkett salvaged careers later on in life, here’s hoping Sanchez does too.

  14. hehateme2 says: Jan 20, 2013 12:48 PM

The jets have been doing a lot of dumpster diving from the Dolphins trash bin.

No wonder these franchises are heading in totally different directions.

  15. silvestregonzalez74 says: Jan 20, 2013 12:51 PM

Ahhhh the jets, footballs version of the marlins!!!!!

  16. ampats says: Jan 20, 2013 12:52 PM

The Jets may be the worst team in the league next year setting up for the first pick in the draft.

  17. tinbender2000 says: Jan 20, 2013 12:52 PM

Campbell deserves a better fate than the Jets.

  18. joeyashwi says: Jan 20, 2013 12:53 PM

Target Tarvaris Jackson? Really? I’m not a Jets fan but wow, I really feel for this team if that’s their aspiration, to get T-Jax. I honestly can’t believe Jackson is even in the league still. Better off drafting a QB than getting him.

  19. thepoliticalfirebrand says: Jan 20, 2013 12:53 PM

Jackson is not a terrible qb. He can get you to the wild-card playoffs, that’s about it. At least he doesn’t run into his linemen like Sanchez. I’d like to see Garrard get another chance, after all he did make a Pro Bowl.

  20. 1joecoleman says: Jan 20, 2013 12:54 PM

Just when I begin to become hopeful, once again, the Jets are already curbing any enthusiasm…not that much remained after this season anyhow smh

  21. mecheng04 says: Jan 20, 2013 1:06 PM

They had a quarterback on the roster to compete with Mark Sanchez and chose not to use him.

  22. tjh9985 says: Jan 20, 2013 1:07 PM

Tarvaris is an upgrade over Sanchez.

  23. hammertoe11 says: Jan 20, 2013 1:10 PM

Jets owner caused this mess. By keep Rex Ryan, as their head coach. And putting the cuffs on the new GM not allowing him to fire Rex Ryan. So the new GM figuring out how to screw the owner over the cuffing on Rex. SO he is keeping Sanchez for one more season of failure. So this way after the 2013 is over the GM can fire Rex and Sanchez all at once. And the GM hires the coach he wants. That is going to give him a super bowl win hopefully. Tebow, is in Florida for the 2013 season. Jets can be a winning team if Rex and Sanchez are not there.

  24. schmitty2 says: Jan 20, 2013 1:17 PM

If that happens the Jets will be switching from an Int machine to a jump passing qb. Right on!!

  25. NotoriousKDV says: Jan 20, 2013 1:21 PM

I understand that the Jets want anyone but Tebow but Tavaris Jackson? Really? 2013 Jets, same mediocre mess as the 2012 Jets.

  26. drgfri says: Jan 20, 2013 1:33 PM

Rex loves Tavaris…. The guy has great feet in the pocket

  27. coltzfan166 says: Jan 20, 2013 1:34 PM

I don’t want to see Alex Smith in New York. Not because of the circus, but because I just don’t think he’d succeed there. His success is dependent on Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman.

  28. trippymane says: Jan 20, 2013 1:44 PM

Seahawks fan here. Look this guy is better than sanchez. He lead us to a 7-9 record two years ago and he missed to game or we pronably woulda been 8-8, 9-7. Dont expect 4th quarter comebacks with him tho lol. Obviously hes not gonna be your guy for the next 2 years youll probably just draft a rook.

  29. daknight93 says: Jan 20, 2013 1:44 PM

just a pure mess with the Jets…no identity as a team and unsure who will be the quarterback in 2013…best option for Jets is to draft a quarterback for the future.

  30. whiteknightblackheart says: Jan 20, 2013 1:56 PM

NEWSFLASH: They are playing Sanchez next season, deal with it. There is no point in throwing good money after bad at that position, and the general lack of talent at the other skills position on offense would be a problem for any quarterback in the league. They would do well to get a RB who avoids contact, and PICK UP A DAMN BLITZ, or better yet, a few receivers who could get separation and make a catch for the new west coast offense. Idzik seems to have a habit of picking talent out of other people’s trash (see: Marshawn Lynch for a 4th, v. Tim Tebow for a 4th), so I am gonna give him the benefit of the doubt through the draft and free agency before I complain that he isn’t pissing away a ton of money and cap space the team doesn’t have for a backup QB who won’t start anyway.

  31. ejm845 says: Jan 20, 2013 1:58 PM

now rex can get a t-jax tat seasons over already and they didnt even play superbowl yet what a bunch of losers

  32. bradygirl12 says: Jan 20, 2013 1:59 PM

Wow…they are shopping in the bargain basement, which is where they will finish in the AFC East…might as well just keep Sanchez and Tebow. If this is their line of thinking,I look for a repeat of 2012′s debacle.

  33. purpleguy says: Jan 20, 2013 2:09 PM

Everything you need to know about T-Jack is that most MN Vikings fans would take Christian Ponder over him any day of the week — and that ain’t saying much.

  34. greymares says: Jan 20, 2013 2:09 PM

the only thing better is if brother Rob was D.C.

  35. cometkazie says: Jan 20, 2013 2:17 PM

I wonder if positive news will ever come from the Jests?

  36. jamiebuf12 says: Jan 20, 2013 2:27 PM

Doug wiiliams and jim plunkett salvaged careers with different teams though…

  37. nfloracle says: Jan 20, 2013 2:27 PM

Matt Moore would be the perfect QB for the Jets. He’s sane and been through screw jobs with both the Panthers and the Dolphins, so he’s tough as hardened nails. He’s also a team player. He’d be a much better pick if they can get him away from the Fins than would be T. Jackson. Gimme a break on that one.

  38. bert1913 says: Jan 20, 2013 2:45 PM

This will work as long as the Jets have a big lead in the 4th quarter. There is a reason why Jackson was inactive all season for the Bills.

Every NFL coach and GM’s success depends on a quality QB,
if they make this move they wont be there long.

  39. kev86 says: Jan 20, 2013 2:49 PM

Doomed if you can’t afford a good QB.

  40. sean6886 says: Jan 20, 2013 3:06 PM

We will have Sanchez next season, no doubt, but I wouldn’t mind picking up Matt Moore. He wouldn’t be expensive for a one or two year contract and he’s been pretty good when coming off the bench for the Dollphins. Let him and Sanchez compete for 2013.

  41. jimmysee says: Jan 20, 2013 3:18 PM

    Tavaris Jackson.

    Good idea!

He and Sanchez can compete for the starting job.

That should definitely sell those season tickets!

  42. getweird4u says: Jan 20, 2013 3:29 PM

worst run team currently in the NFL

  43. larrydavid7000 says: Jan 20, 2013 3:41 PM

OK see you jets in 2014 season. Pathedic Franchise.!!!!!

  44. nananatman says: Jan 20, 2013 3:43 PM

Jason Campbell. He was doing well until the injury after he got out of Washington.

  45. stillers1229 says: Jan 20, 2013 5:25 PM

I’ll give the guy credit for the Marshawn Lynch trade, but I won’t give him a pass on thinking Tavaris Jackson is a viable option at QB.

  46. eegwaybeegway says: Jan 20, 2013 5:43 PM

This would be a great pick-up for the Jets. Given significant playing time, Tarvaris has gotten better each year. He’ll be 30 come the start of the season, so that’s not exactly over the hill and he has good experience, especially his year in Seattle. Vikings fans and Rick Spielman were bufoons to bring about the departure of Tarvaris and now they have a shaky QB in Ponder that they’re pinning their hopes on.

  47. madman731 says: Jan 21, 2013 3:05 AM

Just when I thought the Chiefs were screwed in terms of QB options this season…

  48. crappygovernment says: Jan 21, 2013 4:24 AM

Who are the Jets targeting as paying fans for 2013? They spat in our Christian faces and jerked us around with their treatment of our brother, Tebow!

What self-respecting Christian would ever give this franchise any of their money ever again?

  49. crappygovernment says: Jan 21, 2013 4:27 AM

Tebow is a better Qb than all these potential names… Jeremy’s Lin’s story showed us that the best way to de-fuse a fad player is to let it play and show how average it is. If tebow is so bad, put him in there as starter to see if he fails, or conversely creates more magical victories like he did when they allowed him to actually play QB in 2011!

  50. sb139422 says: Jan 21, 2013 7:55 AM

All this hype over a backup QB? Sheesh. We all know that Sanchez isn’t going anywhere this year. We also know that he’s being paid too much money for the team to bring in any other high profile QB. Mcelroy isn’t a good enough second string and Tebow is a media mess so they’re getting rid of Tebow and they just need a third qb to fill the depth chart. That’s all this is. Nobody thinks that Moore, Jackson, garrard or Campbell is gonna be the qb of the future. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The jets will stink in 2013. As a jets fan I’ve resigned myself to that. I’m going for a good pick in 2014

  51. in3webelieve says: Jan 23, 2013 6:06 AM

Russell wilson took pretty much the same team as tjax was on and took them to layoffs at 11-5 and tjax was 7-9. I know the o line was more gelled this year, but jackson makes terrible decisions under pressure. Jets would be back to square 1 with jackson under center
