The more I read about this situation, the more I feel like Arians wasn't enamored with Luck's ability.

The Colts offense didn't go deep down the field much at all in 2012. If anything, when it DID go down field, defenses were pretty much caught off guard because it was such a rare occasion.

The problem is Luck regularly missed those passes. Badly.

I think Arians is a deep ball offensive mind that had to dramatically change his offensive philosophy in Indy to make up for Andrew's inability to throw deep accurately. He bolted to AZ for a chance to draft/sign his own QB and throw down field to Fiztgerald which I'm sure will be dynamic.

Pep, on the other hand seems to be well aware of this weakness in Lucks game and plans to hide this weakness with a power running game. Smart... but how far is that going to get us if he can't throw deep?

irish1958,

I think it was the first thing out of Grigson's mouth at his end of the year press conference. I think the offensive line will be his main priority to upgrade across the board this off-season. The system switch should help these offensive linemen as well.

Also, while Arians did a good job, I think this direct opposite hire seems to point to the Colt management team not being enamored with his system, which gets QBs killed and makes the line look significantly worse than it already is, same complaints out of Pittsburgh.

Without a better offensive line Luck will not get better and might even get badly hurt. They need to spend every dollar they have to improve the line.

@james light
Couldn't agree more. This offense will wear a defense out with the speed their receivers have. I am hoping it looks a lot like the evil Patriots except with more talent. It's all about the yards after catch. If that is dink and dunk, then I am all in.
Go Blue.

It sounds like a bad fit for Luck’s talents to me. He’s not a system quarterback, he’s a guy you build a system around that feature’s both his athleticism, size, and ability to push the ball down the field. That’s not dink’n'dunk (i.e.,”The short, efficient passing game, a high completion rate”). A good power running game benefits all quarterbacks however. Who doesn’t want that?

Are you kidding? This is the offense that made him the best college quarterback in the country his junior and senior year, come on bro you should know this.

Luck looked great running a power West Coast system at Stanford. They ran that with really no receivers that could stretch the field vertically. Now with some NFL receivers who can get deep to go along with the short precision passing game that just wears out a defense underneath, I think Luck will thrive.

I'd go more with McCarthy's variation of the West Coast offense (more vertical, relies more heavily on the quarterback's athleticism to buy time), or at least build towards that. They don't have the line and receivers for that yet, but that should be the target IMO.
