Sharpe rips Belichick for declining post-game interview

CBS Getty Images

Patriots coach Bill Belichick never looks happy when he wins.  He’s definitely not happy when he loses.

And CBS analyst Shannon Sharpe has had enough.  Sharpe ripped Belichick for declining to submit to an interview with Steve Tasker of CBS after Sunday’s 28-13 loss to the Ravens.

“There’s something to be said about being gracious in defeat,” Sharpe said.  “We’ve seen the New England Patriots five times in the last 12 years be victorious.  And we’ve seen the opposing coaches that lost come out and talk to our Steve Tasker.  Coach Cowher did it when [the Steelers] lost to them.  We saw this last week [when the Patriots beat the Texans].

“Bill Belichick makes it real easy for you to root against the Patriots.  You can’t be a poor sport all the time.  You’re not gonna win all the time.  And he does this every time he loses.  It is unacceptable.”

So much for the perception that CBS is the official network of the New England Patriots.

Then again, if Sharpe isn’t back with CBS next year, we’ll know why.

Most classless organization in professional sports. Just go back and look at the way they ‘won’ their other Super Bowls.

  4. rickrock6661982 says: Jan 20, 2013 10:24 PM

Should’ve called out Tom for having “Bradyface” again like Patriots fan did the same with Manning last week.

That would really grind their gears

    Agreed.

  6. patssteelersorgiants says: Jan 20, 2013 10:24 PM

With the CBS president sitting in Kraft’s box and Foxboro Stadium having a CBS restaurant it’s probably safe to say Sharpe will be looking for a job.

But as a Pats fan, I say he’s right. Belichick is a poor loser, I watched Brady try to kick a player in the groin, and most of the fans left before the game was over. Patriots are done.

Belichick has had a great career and, at 60 years old, should be man enough to express respect for his opponent after the game is over.

Sharpe picked against the Ravens just like everyone else on that panel. That will probably make BB feel better. Oh wait, it doesn’t mean anything. Can’t see Sharpe losing his job over those comments. Can’t exactly sue him for slander. The Patriots are no different than the Falcons. A pretty regular season team.

It’s not Belichick’s fault. His game strategy advisor that helps him with tactics also advised him not to do the interview. Belichick has implicit faith in this guy. His name is Lenny Kekua, look him up.

Yea, I’d be tempted to stay away from that too.

(as if there are any tv reporters with the nerve to ask him such a question – there never will be.)

  25. mattolikesthevikes says: Jan 20, 2013 10:26 PM

Unacceptable? To who? To you Shannon? That’s a shame. Unfortunately for you and the rest of the media, Bill will be right back on the sidelines next year, winning 10-12 games, making the playoffs, and pissing off more media members.

As a Pats fans, that’s acceptable.

  30. strangelove74 says: Jan 20, 2013 10:27 PM

He is right and its nice to see a broadcaster take a stand and make the case for it. Belichek is a great coach, but not a great person. No one would want to give that interview, but coaches do because the fans want to see it. He comes across like a sore loser by refusing to address the media.

  47. thepasswordis12345 says: Jan 20, 2013 10:34 PM

Didn’t your moms always tell you if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all. I doubt Belichick had anything nice to say after the way the Brady Bunch laid down today, so it’s best he says nothing at all.

Belichick showed sportsmanship and congratulated Harbaugh out on the field. Why does it make him a poor loser if he would rather share the pain of losing with his players than with some reporter looking to capture his disappointment on camera? It’s ironic that Sharpe of all people is the one calling out Belichick for his lack of sportsmanship. I never remember Sharpe being gracious in victory or defeat either.

  48. opinion157983 says: Jan 20, 2013 10:34 PM

  50. bucslose says: Jan 20, 2013 10:35 PM

  51. dtr3e says: Jan 20, 2013 10:36 PM

Sharpe is right The Pats are the worst bunch of losers right up there with their big mouthed, low IQ fan base. The Pats are done and this is the start of it all coming undone for Poutyface Brady and Belicheat.

  52. 2ndaryinsanity says: Jan 20, 2013 10:36 PM

  53. raiders4life says: Jan 20, 2013 10:36 PM

I commend Shannon Sharpe for saying what had to be said, despite the looks of discomfort from his NFL on CBS colleagues, calling Bill Belichick out as a poor sport. Around the league Belichick is deservedly respected as a great football mind, but as a person he’s freakin’ jerk. Sharpe couldn’t have said it any better. I have a new found respect for Mr. Sharpe.

  54. middy8484 says: Jan 20, 2013 10:36 PM

  55. doublezero74 says: Jan 20, 2013 10:36 PM

Oh yeah the patriots are done. They’re 18 million under the salary cap for next year with all their key players under contract. They will be awesome again for years to come while other team will flounder. Our winning percentage speaks for itself and any other team in the NFL would salivate at having the success the patriots have had and will continue to have

  56. ynot1381 says: Jan 20, 2013 10:37 PM

As a die hard New England fan, I love the hate that our losses bring. I truly love it.

Baltimore played a far better game and New England looked bad. Everyone involved is at fault.

But I know that next season we can be better. Not every team in the league can say that.

  57. retiredarmy1 says: Jan 20, 2013 10:37 PM

    One word. “CHEATER”

  58. vikinganswer says: Jan 20, 2013 10:38 PM

  59. jetsfansince1968 says: Jan 20, 2013 10:38 PM

  60. braven4evr says: Jan 20, 2013 10:38 PM

  61. raiderspy1 says: Jan 20, 2013 10:38 PM

Yes, Shannon you said it. Why does the NFL hold Bellichik to a different set of rules? I know he is not God, cause I don’t pray to Bellichik.

  69. jetsfan79 says: Jan 20, 2013 10:45 PM

Pats won’t win again, they’re good enough to get there but without knowing what the other defense is going to do they can’t win. Bellicheck clearly loves rocky as that outfit was cool only in 1974

  70. tigerlilac says: Jan 20, 2013 10:45 PM

Belichick was gracious in his comments to John Harbaugh after the game at midfield. He gave credit to the Ravens in his post game interview to the collective media. Win or lose he has never been a quote machine in post game situations.

To those of you that want to rip him as a coach, the probability that you are as good at your job as he is at his is less than 0.1%.

I suspect John Harbaugh and his brother Jim hold Belichick in very high regard.

  71. deflatedfootball says: Jan 20, 2013 10:45 PM

The Patriots carry themselves the same way whether they win or lose. This may be where the “arrogance” comes from but it’s funny how the Patriots get ripped no matter what they do. They are typically complimentary of the teams they are about to play, blame no one but themselves when they lose but they get pegged as poor sports for not being thrilled about losing an AFC Championship game.

On the other side of the coin, no one mentions Lewis’ post game antics after every game, Suggs profanity laced tirades and the fact that the Ravens haven’t lost a game in the last 6 years without somehow being cheated, screwed or somehow wrong.

Why exactly are the Patriots the most hated team in the NFL?

  72. illinininer says: Jan 20, 2013 10:45 PM

Show me a good loser and I’ll show you a loser.

The most pointless and awkward interview in all of sports. Did you watch the interview with Mike Smith? I felt guilty watching it! No need for it.

  73. derklempner says: Jan 20, 2013 10:45 PM

I think everyone posting here has missed the most obvious question:

How do we know for sure that this is what Shannon Sharpe actually said?

I don’t know how anybody can understand him when he speaks. It’s like he’s talking with a mouth full of marbles.

  74. Mr. Wright 212 says: Jan 20, 2013 10:45 PM

  75. thepasswordis12345 says: Jan 20, 2013 10:46 PM

Not nearly as classy as this:

“Tell them to have fun at the Pro Bowl. Arrogant F—ers.”

    -Terrell Suggs

Nothing but class over on the Ravens side, I tell you.

  76. ebergevin says: Jan 20, 2013 10:46 PM

People need to stop pretending like everyone’s a good sport. Bill’s a fiery guy. He doesn’t have much to say even after a win. Honestly, what was Steve Tasker going to ask him that couldn’t wait to the post-game press conference? Shannon took exception to it because he’s a former Raven and didn’t like his teammates not getting padded on the back.

  77. Mr. Wright 212 says: Jan 20, 2013 10:47 PM

  78. cgsuddeath says: Jan 20, 2013 10:48 PM

  79. nflpuppetmaster says: Jan 20, 2013 10:48 PM

Who cares!!! You wanna know what I want in a head coach? Championships. I don’t care if he’s nice to the media. I don’t care if he panders to the fan base. I don’t care if he’s “classy.”(whatever that actually means) I want my coach to keep my team in contention for a championship year after year, other than that who cares??? I wish Belichick was the HC for my favorite team.

  80. lesterclan says: Jan 20, 2013 10:49 PM

They’re not going to win it every year. No team does. But the New England Patriots know what it takes to sustain success. Not their greatest moment today, but a model organization.

  91. stangz11 says: Jan 20, 2013 10:56 PM

Listen, if I just lost a gut-wrenching game like that to end my season I wouldn’t want to talk to the media either. Heck, even if BB did talk to the media, we all know he would not have said very much. To imply that he is “classless” because he refused the interview is completely stupid. BB isn’t a saint, but every time he talks he is complimenting the opponents and never saying anything bad. How is that classless? People are so near-sighted these days

patriot fans are hilarious- they love to be hated when they win, but can’t stand the heat when they lose. What a bunch of softies.

The RAIDERS are the original “hated ones” and the fans have learned to embrace it.
The difference being the RAIDERS cheated by hitting late and using too much stickum- the chowds cheat by taping opponents practice and greasing league officials.

    Bunch of cheaters.

The Pats are the modern day Buffalo Bills after they got caught cheating. Bills dominated a cupcake division like the Pats are doing now, and once they are in the playoffs, they choke! Without their spycams, Brady is just like Marino, a great regular season qb. And don’t tell me the Pats didn’t benefit from cheating. BB would not spend years, have dedicated staff to cheat, have them sneak into other team’s practices, issue fake field passes…etc and not get anything out of it. BB is a cold and calculated genius. No way he does all that and put his reputation on the line for nothing.

People are making a mountain from a molehill. Sharp was ranting about Belichick refusing the CBS interview–and he’s not the only coach who’s refused the network interview after a loss. He gave his required press conference just like every other coach.

And as a Steelers fan who ADORES Chuck Noll, I can tell you he routinely refused the midfield, post-game handshake with opposing coaches–win or lose. All these protocols we now expect of coaches weren’t demanded in Noll’s day.

That said, I consider myself very fortunate to have watch the current Patriots entertain their fans and compete for a championship every year.

I remember when the Pats did not have a stadium (pre Schaefer Stadium), teams that threatened to go a whole season without a victory, and an owner that had less cash than me. Even then, they were still my team. So, feel free to slam them all you want but the real Patriots fans are very proud of our team, even in defeat.

I agree. Belichick answered every kind of question during the post game press conference. Who cares if he didn’t give an interview in addition to that? During the press conference he said that the Ravens made more plays and just took it from them. What was Sharpe going to ask that hadn’t already been asked? Sometimes I think the media feels a little too entitled for answers and face time. Who doesn’t get annoyed by the sideline reporter who scurries up to a coach right after the second quarter asking questions? They never ask anything of substance. Now if BB had declined the post game press conference, I’d say that it was a classless display. I just honestly get what the big deal is here.

Why does Belichick owe CBS an interview? Coaches do press conferences after the game which will basically cover everything he would have said to Steve Tasker. Honestly it’s a joke that this is a big deal to some people. He shared a moment with Harbaugh on the field and congratulated him. Why isn’t that enough? People are jealous of the Patriots success over the past decade. Plain and simple. They will look for anything to discredit NE’s players and coaches. I’m a Dolphins and I have been rooting against New England for my entire life. But in the end I see things for what they are. Belichick was upset about the loss and didn’t want to waste his time with an interview that would ultimately mean nothing Why does Belichick have to go public and praise the Ravens? Why can’t he do it privately, which is exactly what he did with Harbaugh? Some people are far too sensitive.

  137. hor2012 says: Jan 20, 2013 11:53 PM

That particular bragging right belongs to the Miami Dolphins followed by the Dallas Cowboys. Funny isnt it? I grew up in Attleboro Ma a Dolphins fan it is truly amazing how short these pats fans memories are before Brady the pats were then and with the exception of 1985 and 1997 were a historic bottom dweller team ala the cleveland browns now always with a top 5 pick always last. Well pats fans fins have a promising qb first time since Marino a great D, are the second youngest team , and only need to build up their offense, and oh yeah 46 million dollars for free agency, 8 picks in the draft 5 of which in the top 86 picks. Brady isn’t getting any younger, you have an old team, you dont have a backup like Cassel in case Brady goes down, and your best playmaker just broke his arm twice this year, you dont have the money to keep Welker, and you have 4 total draft picks. Good luck next year, your gonna need it.

We all know Belichick needs a personality transplant.
However, you can sympathize with all the losing coaches for having to put up with such inane questions as “how does it feel to lose”
Shannon Sharpe does not seem to do this and he does ask pertinent questions. But should’nt he and his colleagues not have a responsibility to police the other questioners to make sure that their questions are appropriate.
Do not ask about feelings, but rather ask about plays that changed the game or mistakes that changed the game.
We do have to give Tom Brady credit tonight. He answered all questions directly. Perhaps this is the place coach could learn from the player.

Ya see, once they knew what defense the Ravens called, the Pats could then audible their offense plays at the line of scrimmage into a play that would work perfectly against the defense that the Ravens had called.

I think that was a big key to the game. You know, that the Pats were not able to do that.

Who cares? You get at least 5 wins (if not 6) gifted via the easiest division in the NFL, the consistently easiest schedule in football, despite making the Super Bowl. You’re going to win no less than 10 games while never being tested in the process; which is precisely why you lost last night.

I doubt Tasker wanted to interview him but it comes with the job. Man up, Billy.

Since when is Sharpe the poster boy for “common courtesy”? Since he was on the sideline pretending to be calling the president for help against the Pats. He and his bigot brother should go away

I rather be a pats fan then a ravens fan any day… They talk about how the pats haven’t won any thing in a while, well the ravens haven’t won anything in 12 years… And that will only continue as they fall to the 49ers Feb 3

  194. 12patriotsfan says: Jan 21, 2013 6:21 PM

Most people hating on the patriots are mad cause their team never makes they playoffs and we compete for titles every year… I wonder who will be favorited next year to get back to the Super Bowl?… Um let me guess New England while the haters and there teams will watch us again from the uncomfort of the couches…

  195. 12patriotsfan says: Jan 21, 2013 6:39 PM

And by the way those of you talking about Brady’s legacy taking a dive this year… If becoming the all time winningest playoff QB passing joe montana in NFL history and the #1 all time post season passing QB for passing yards… If that’s a legacy dive I’d hate to hear what your starting QB’s legacy…

  196. middy8484 says: Jan 21, 2013 7:38 PM

@12patriosfan, you’re this decades version of the Buffalo Bills. Your team will not make the Super Bowl for a long time. Brady is getting old. He has 2 years left in him and after that, get used to looking up to the Phins and the Bills.
    Mark my words!!!!!!

  197. 12patriotsfan says: Jan 21, 2013 9:27 PM

Tom Brady 1st ballot hall of gamer and if he never played another snap or down would go into the history books as the second best QB to ever play the game! Point blank!

The Patriots carry themselves the same way whether they win or lose.

Why exactly are the Patriots the most hated team in the NFL?
    ———————————————————
    1. Because they cheated their way to 3 Super Bowls
    2. Because Tom Brady is two faced – plays the humble card all the time but taunts when things go his way. He could learn from a real Boston Legend like Larry Bird, who didn’t say the sportsmanship saying with the camera only to act the jerk on the field.
    3. Because they intentionally ran the score up in many games in 2007 to try to erase the stigma of Spygate – for instance putting in goal line package at end of the game vs. Cowboys to score a TD with a double digit lead when kneeling on it would end the game.

The Patriots are the NFL’s Lance Armstrong. That is why they are hated.

  199. demons87 says: Jan 22, 2013 1:22 AM

This is the same Shannon Sharpe that once taunted Pats fans during a 1996 rout, “I’ll Call the President. President, we need the National Guard! We need as many men as you can spare! Because we are killing the Patriots! So call the dogs off! Send the National Guard, please!”

Meanwhile, after his team lost to the Pats in 2003 in the come-from-behind-victory that featured the intentional safety that was key to the win, ranted “They can’t run the ball! All they’re gonna do is play-action, they can’t run the ball.” So maybe he knows what he’s talking about when he calls someone a sore loser and maybe he isn’t the best person to say, “There’s something to be said about being gracious in defeat.”

Bill Belichick has dementia, he is regressing as a coach….and the Patriits try to get by with players on defense especially with defensive backs…that are cheap and lower tier and just coach them up to their system. Patriots last Superbowl win? 2004…it will be a long offseason for them….

  201. 12patriotsfan says: Jan 22, 2013 9:28 AM

The patriots are the most hated team in the league cause they’re one of the best teams of all time how many nfl records has Tom Brady broken or set too many to count and still going suckers! So you guys can hate and talk about spygate all you want cause the pats will keep winning and contending for titles until Brady and bilichick retires…

  202. sportsindcfan says: Jan 22, 2013 12:01 PM

I am not a fan of Sharpe, but he said what a lot of people were thinking. I fully realize that Belachik is an incredible coach, but wish he was more gracious. I feel bad for the reporters who follow the Pats for having to listen to him. Definitely not a role model.

  203. patsfiend says: Jan 22, 2013 3:55 PM

I’m sure the former Raven and Bronco Sharpe was entirely objective in his statements. He should focus his time on learning how to read highlights in a language people can comprehend instead of giving media feedback to a hall of fame coach.

You realize that the great wade phillips took a time out even when he know the game was over before the kneel down. ? So he obviously thought game was still on . Stop with this running up the score crap. Play defense. What do you want teams which are up a lot to do on defense ? let other team score .This is so lame.

It’s pretty apparent how shallow our society has become after reading through these comments. The sport has become secondary to the drama and hyperbole surrounding the actual event. Might as well start watching ‘the view’ fellas, cuz the media has your nads in a jar and they’ll continue to feed you this soap opera drama bs until you man up and stop feeding into it.

  206. klr0514 says: Jan 23, 2013 12:18 PM

Is he the first coach to decline these interviews? Certainly not, nor will he be the last. Reading through the comments here, it’s obvious who actually follows sports and who follows the press. Spygate was a press thing for people wanting to skim the surface of professional sports. Every coach did this for years, and continue to do this to the allowed level now. Think those parabolic mics on the sidelines are there to listen to their own players? Winning coach, winning team, been distracted by trying to be an offensive coach instead of the defensive coach, and being hampered by medicore draft picks. “Classless coach…” hmm.. Payton paying his players to hit and end the season for those players? Lewis somehow managing to lose the only evidence that would convict him of the crime he did? Seems like the NFL is full of “classy” people!

  207. denouemen says: Jan 23, 2013 2:31 PM

Anyone who believes there is a single NFL or AFL team that doesn’t cheat as much as they can get away with is a complete moron, and the leader of that parade is Shannon Sharpe. News Flash: There is no such thing as “class” in professional sports, from the top down.

This guy is delusional!!!!!!!! SpyGate will always be their downfall. You might as well put asterisks to the Super Bowls they “allegedly won” They were never considered a dynasty. That belongs to teams like the Cowboys or Steelers & 49ers. Not the lonely cheaters. Now go cry me a river just like your punk quarterback who tries to hurt Ed Reed. Waaaaaaaa. LOL

Haven’t enough players retired in the last ten years to replace Sharpe and Esiason on TV?
