Boomer Esiason: If you want to hate Belichick, he gives you a reason

Bill Belichick AP

After the Patriots lost in the AFC Championship Game, coach Bill Belichick was ripped on the postgame show for declining to give an interview to CBS. That wasn’t the first time that happened.

Six years ago, Belichick was curt with CBS’s Solomon Wilcotts after the Patriots lost the AFC Championship Game to the Colts, and CBS’s Boomer Esiason ripped him for that.

I was pretty disgusted with Belichick,” Esiason said in 2007. “I’ve interviewed him on my MSG show. It’s hard. It’s really hard. I don’t think he does it on purpose. I just think he doesn’t know any better. I just thought it was unprofessional.”

So it’s no surprise that Esiason said today that he agrees with his CBS colleague Shannon Sharpe that Belichick did not conduct himself well.

Unfortunately it’s not in Bill’s nature,” Esiason said today on WEEI. “For all those people who want to have a reason to hate Bill Belichick, well, he gives it to them. And I can understand why Shannon said what he said. I’ve been down this road before. I’ve come to expect it.”

Belichick did what was required of him under NFL rules, holding a post-game press conference on Sunday night and a post-season press conference on Monday morning. If you’re going to hate a coach for not doing more than that, you’re going to hate Belichick.

Boomer, haters will always hate. no reason is really ever needed. it is just their nature.

Bill B hates the media because they write about what other people accomplish not what they did. The talking heads are just that and nothing more…geniuses they are not Bill is a football genius with a testy attitude he has earned the right to have.

He’s just a modern-day Chuck Noll. Simple as that. I’d love to see Noll have to deal with today’s media! Hah. He could barely stand one or two channels that actually covered football back then.

Hope he keeps or remembers what these guys are saying. We will be back next year and if we win I hope belicheck snups these guys

  8. jsho55 says: Jan 21, 2013 5:19 PM

At the end of the day he did what was required of him. He just lost a playoff game….If I was in his shoes I probably would not want to run to the media for an interview either.

  9. generalherald says: Jan 21, 2013 5:19 PM

Is he a coach or a media sock puppet?

  10. blacknole08 says: Jan 21, 2013 5:19 PM

Why don’t he just ask Belicheck himself since he gets to interview him a bunch?

Don’t hide behind a press release or go on another network and whine about it.

  11. brewcrewfan54 says: Jan 21, 2013 5:19 PM

  18. pats2001 says: Jan 21, 2013 5:22 PM

i love having him as the pats coach. i realize most people outside of the pats fanbase despise him. he def doesnt do himself any favors when he pulls stunts like these. and people are going to continue hating him regardless so at this point in his career, it really doesnt matter what other people think. he’s going to do it the way he thinks. i personally think he handles this aspect of it like a moron. he’s clearly a smart guy so the fact that he puts himself in this type of position is amazing. that being said, any other teams’ fans would love to have him as their coach. just remember that double standard when you bash him. go niners

  21. bigwinintx says: Jan 21, 2013 5:25 PM

When he wins, he’s right there for an interview, when he loses, you can’t just disappear.

Every coach gives an interview to the sideline’s guy or locker room reporter, it’s part of the new NFL.

  22. mblue24 says: Jan 21, 2013 5:25 PM

Bill is the best coach in the NFL and has the Rings to show it. Everybody needs toons there own business and quit hating on the Patriots and coach. Everybody is just upset bc they have always won unlike all of the other NFL teams, the Patriots are a very successful team and it starts with the coach ad owner. They just know how to run an organization for success. The haters and bs media are just jealous bc they can’t get there

  23. dowhatifeellike says: Jan 21, 2013 5:26 PM

He’s required to talk to the media – it comes with the job. League rules and whatnot.

No matter how good you are at your job you have to do all of it, not just the parts you want to do.

  24. wikidpissah says: Jan 21, 2013 5:26 PM

Do people here ever stick to the subject of the post?

BB never gives post game or half time interviews, win or lose. He does press conferences, and a weekly radio show and gives as little information as possible. It has nothing to do with being a sore loser.

If you read what John Harbaugh said about their post game discussion you’d hear that he gave all the credit to the Ravens and their coaching staff. I’d say that’s more gracious than helping CBS pump their ratings.

  25. countduku says: Jan 21, 2013 5:30 PM

Right Boomer and Shannon, If someone doesn’t comply with and satisfy YOUR very agenda, you should hate him. That’s what I’ll teach my children. thanks.

  27. dannyreneau says: Jan 21, 2013 5:31 PM

I remember the days when i liked Boomer. Before he let Marino and Sharpe’s arrogant and bitter attitude affect him. He use to be the only good thing about the CBS pregame show, the FOX pregame show is loads better.

  28. tropboi11 says: Jan 21, 2013 5:32 PM

How come no one mentions John Harbaugh being unprofessional when he was the one jumping up and down the sideline and on the field with his arms flapping up and down while crying to the ref about a good call that was even reviewed. Nooooo, just cry about how a coach did everything he was supposed to do after a big loss but nothing more. All that aside Im happy the Ravens won, im tired of seeing the Pats in th SB.

  29. brenenostler says: Jan 21, 2013 5:32 PM

I hate to defend Bill Belichick, but I wouldnt want to talk to anyone after having lost an AFC Championship game. Maybe a week later I would, but not immediately after.

  30. closisgood says: Jan 21, 2013 5:32 PM

And belicheck wasnt praising the ravens, it was just rhetoric.
What people expect him to say.
    So its all he said.

Dont say he is a genius but then doesnt think out all his media outings.
Belicheat will burn in hell someday. Hopefully.

  31. jamaltimore says: Jan 21, 2013 5:36 PM

  33. egomaniac247 says: Jan 21, 2013 5:40 PM

Look, he might be a grumpy old man but LOL at the media all piling on today.

Leading up to these types of games the media is calling him a genius.

But hey, ignore them for a few hours and you’re suddenly a terrible guy.

I’m pretty sure he hasn’t changed. They just overlooked it and wanted to buddy up to him when things were good.

  34. spartan822 says: Jan 21, 2013 5:42 PM

I love that he skipped the interview, just so that we can see these useless TV analysts fuss and whine about not getting an interview that they’re not guaranteed to get.

He’s not required to do anything more than the post game press conference. Anything else is gravy.

  35. fakefranknunley says: Jan 21, 2013 5:43 PM

  37. jmc000 says: Jan 21, 2013 5:43 PM

How come Shannon Sharpe or anyone else going on a spiel about how classless Peyton Manning was for declining an interview after he lost last week?

btw the interview is not mandatory, the press conference is, which Belichick attended.

Had Mike Smith declined the interview (not sure maybe he did didn’t watch the post game) I have hard time believing people would be going this nuts.

  41. flaccodelic says: Jan 21, 2013 5:46 PM

Though Belichick is undeniably a prick to the media, credit where it’s due: he went over and looked a long time for Harbaugh and then talked to him for an extended handshake. Then he hustled off and blew off a sideline guy. Is that so horrible? Much more unprofessional to act like Tomlin did to Harbaugh a few weeks back after the Steelers won the freakin’ game. I say give Bill a pass on this one.

  42. yooperman says: Jan 21, 2013 5:46 PM

    Media, “Define really disappointing”
It’s a wonder anyone talks to reporters.

  45. themagicisyou says: Jan 21, 2013 5:51 PM

I don’t care for Belichick, but it’s hard to fault him for his handling of the press. Watch a presser sometime: fifteen minutes of journalists asking long, inarticulate, leading questions. It’s insulting. I’d be curt, too.

  46. azjohnny says: Jan 21, 2013 5:51 PM

It’s not like BB was going to say anything anyways….something like ” We lost the game, any questions”

  47. all4patriots says: Jan 21, 2013 5:52 PM

Read Peter King’s MMQB column to see if Harbaugh thinks Belichick is a sore loser. Bottom line is that BB cares about football people but don’t really give a crap about the media.

    Harbaugh:

“I’ll treasure that conversation forever. Before the game, we talked, and he said maybe we should just skip the postgame handshake because it’s such a circus. I said I didn’t know; I thought we should do it, it’s just the right thing to do. And we did.

He was so classy, so gracious. Complimentary about how we played, about our game plan, about how tough it is to play us.

I told him how much we pattern our organization around theirs, how much we study them.”

  48. billsfan1 says: Jan 21, 2013 5:55 PM

Is that how post game interviews go?

  49. closisgood says: Jan 21, 2013 5:56 PM

Hey if you patriots fans are happy and supporting Belicheat, how about you guys just dont get put on national broadcasts anymore.

    REMEMBER, this is about ENTERTAINMENT.
If you’re coach doesn’t want to entertain, then put on a better story.
I’d rather see Rex and the Jets get plowed by 30 by anyone other than the Patriots than to see Brady crying and Belicheat being an ahole to everyone.

You’re missing the part where he went to Harbaugh before the game and suggested skipping the post-game handshake. BB didn’t want to do that either, he only did it because Harbaugh stood firm.

  53. tellemallrex says: Jan 21, 2013 5:59 PM

There are 31 other teams in the league that would gladly swap coaches with the Pats. Coaching wise he is a first ballot hall of famer, personality wise….he will never be Mr. Congeniality. As a long suffering Jets fan, our coach is neither!! Don’t have to like BB, but your just dumb if you don’t respect him.

  54. clownsfan says: Jan 21, 2013 6:06 PM

This has always been BB’s style. It’s part of the reason Cleveland sports media ran him out of town. Not enough juicy tidbits for those morons to obsess or over-react to. Personally I have no problem with it. It’s been goin on for so long nobody else should really have a problem with it either. But I digress……

  55. nineroutsider says: Jan 21, 2013 6:10 PM

I don’t want to hate him though, so I don’t. I like that some coaches don’t play well with the media, not sure why. Maybe it is the stupid questions…

We all know a lot of this is song and dance. It gets a little old after a while. All that matters is what happens in between the lines, for the most part. Post game reports, post game pressers, etc. are all about servicing their various contractual duties. If he only wants to do the bare minimum then I don’t think you can complain about it as long as he does it.

Hopefully he continues to speak in a very low monotone voice for all of his pressers. I think its great.

  56. kagey7 says: Jan 21, 2013 6:11 PM

Do you all not think John Fox was just as upset afte losing his game – a game that was much closer than the Pats/Ravens game. Yet he gave an interview. Why does everyone keep cutting this old curmudgeon so much slack. He’s a sore loser.

  57. randy001 says: Jan 21, 2013 6:11 PM

And this doesn’t take away from his coaching skills.

Boomer and all other media are free to hate whomever they please. As long as they cover their subjects fairly and objectively, that’s fine. Problem is that rarely happens.

Funny how the Pats have several writers who do a fantastic job covering the team even with the difficulties of not having much access.

  61. csilojohnson says: Jan 21, 2013 6:17 PM

Not everyone has a personality that translates well in front of cameras and microphones. The guy has always been that way. He looks uncomfortable at best and aggitated at worst. Thats just him. If you want smiles and sound bytes see Rex Ryan.

The media is a bit much these days. I understand its a business and the TV and advertising dollars are huge. But some of these guys dont want to answer a thousand questions about their every thought and move. I respect that. For those of you that watch baseball, take a look at Derek Jeter during an interview. He never answers the question and never tells you anything of substance. Its a boring interview and he wants it that way. Some guys just dont like that stuff

  64. skinsfan4lyf says: Jan 21, 2013 6:29 PM

  65. billycundiff says: Jan 21, 2013 6:30 PM

As a Ravens fan I’m very happy we beat the Patriots to go to the Super Bowl. But let’s be realistic, what town wouldn’t want Belichik to coach their football team and Brady to be their QB; especially a team that’s been a perennial loser. His job is to win football games, plain and simple. So what he doesn’t exude a warm and fuzzy feeling, he does his job and does it extremely well. As they say, if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. That’s how you deal with the Belichiks and Bradys. The Ravens beat the best and I could now care less about Belichik and Brady.

  66. charger383 says: Jan 21, 2013 6:31 PM

People complain if he doesn’t talk. If/when he does talk, people complain about what he says (or doesn’t say). He is kind of a jerk in his public interpersonal relationships. But, he is paid to coach the team, and win games. True, part of coaching is dealing with the press, but I bet any good coach would tell you winning is FAR more important, and Belichek wins more than he loses.

  70. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Jan 21, 2013 6:42 PM

add Vince Lombardi to that list. Nobody was more gruff to those he disliked. The first Packer player to show up with an agent for contract talks was sent packing shortly there after. I can’t imagine (aahh, yes I can) how he would deal with someone like Shannon Sharp.

Bill Parcells was very brutal to those in the media who would ask questions that he did not like, especially those questions that negatively regarded other coaches.

One thing about BB – you will never see, read or hear about him putting down any football coach.

    Really,

I’m pretty sure no one has ever said “I can’t wait to hear Bill Billichick speak after the game”. He has never said a memorable thing about anything ever. As a matter of fact he is probably the most boring speaker next to Ben Stein and someone is COMPLAINING that he didn’t speak after a late game?

  84. jpak12 says: Jan 21, 2013 7:48 PM

While I guess he should of done the interview just to avoid this mess, I hate how members if the sports media act as if players and coaches owe them. When teams lose they will say whatever they want and call for the coach/player to be fired or cut yet they expect players and coaches to spend their own time aiding the media members career by giving them an interview. Then to make it worse they criticize him when he doesn’t give much information in the interview.

Lots of hubris w BB and OC McDaniel who think they can win w anyone. They were made to look ridiculous yesterday as their dainty push ball offence fell apart in the wind against a decent pass D.

On the other side of the ball, they had no answer for Anquan Bolden. This was on Belichek who has flubbed building a real secondary for years.

You’re missing the part where he went to Harbaugh before the game and suggested skipping the post-game handshake. BB didn’t want to do that either, he only did it because Harbaugh stood firm.
    ____________________________________
He did it with McDaniels when McDaniels was HC of Denver too. McDaniels is on the Pats staff again. So your point is basically that he didn’t want to do it, but he did it out of respect for the other coach’s wishes? So he does have respect for others? Great point you made about his being a jerk then…not.

Also glad to see that in your summary of what was said in the PK article, you left out all the glowing stuff Harbaugh said about how classy BB was and how much praise he had for the Ravens. You leave out the parts of the article you don’t like which shows you have an agenda.

  90. datageek94 says: Jan 21, 2013 8:39 PM

Notice that Belichick wasn’t termed ‘the best football coach in NFL history’ until he hitched his wagon to Tom Brady. No one seems to remember he was fired from the Browns.

When a coach has a truly elite quarterback, his team’s going to win 10 or 11 games a year. Then add to it the perennially weak division and easy schedules the Patriots play, and they ought to have great records year in and year out.

My opinion? Bill shows complete disrespect for football and the NFL for the way he conducts himself, and even by his cut off sleeve hoodies. Not that every coach should dress like Tom Landry, but a hoodie with cut off sleeves? Gimme a break!

thats funny if the guy is such a genius how come he hasnt been able to win anything since the spygate incident. he is nothing more than a self absorbed obnoxious jerk.

  94. pizzon says: Jan 21, 2013 8:53 PM

with all the draft picks that the Patriots have accumulated how is it that they still have the kind of defense that he continuosly puts out there wk in and wk out. that doesnt sound like a genuis to me.

As a Bills fan I hate Belicheck.. But I respect him. If he doesn’t want to give an interview after a tough loss.. I get it he’s human.
As for Boomer. Shut up! The fact that you have a radio show is a miracle! I remember when Bruce used to toss you like a rag doll. He didn’t do it to Marino because he respected him. You on the other hand never got any respect because just like your football career your show is second rate. Biggest media market in the world you get 10000 listeners

Bill Belichick has been like this since spygate. You get caught cheating and you get uncomfortable and embarrassed. He should just apologize and move on but his ego won’t let him. They should take all the championships away from them or put an asterisk next to them. If he’s such a defensive mind, why has his defense been near the bottom of the league since then. Who drafts the players? You get caught and you find out it’s not as easy to stop opposing offenses. His two best players on offense other than Brady were drafted from his friends’ teams(Hernandez & Gronkowski). Take Brady out of the equation and his record wouldn’t be as good. By the way, I think the Ravens have proven that the dink and dunk offense is stoppable. They’re so soft, you knock them in the mouth and they cry like little girls. Brady is gutless, he can’t try and run for a first down on fourth down because Haloti Ngata is chasing him. He threw the ball away, Branch had no chance of catching that ball. Mark my words, these patriots will not make it to the superbowl again unless they cheat.

Are people really this stupid and full of hate? Saying you hate a man and hope he burns in hell because you don’t like the football team he coaches. It’s f$^king football!! He’s a coach….he coaches….and completes the obligatory pointless interviews after every game. Who here really gets any helpful or useful information out of a football interview? You WATCH the game and KNOW what’s going on. The coach is asked what went wrong or what went right and gives some generic answer that everyone has heard 1,000 times and could probably predict exactly what the coach will say. By all accounts, BB is a funny and fun guy to hang out with away from the media’s spotlight. Get a f&*king life people. If you met him, you’d probably love to grab a beer with the guy. It’s f&*king FOOTBALLL! He’s not giving people cancer or starting wars.

He’s just a modern-day Chuck Noll. Simple as that. I’d love to see Noll have to deal with today’s media! Hah. He could barely stand one or two channels that actually covered football back then.
    ————————————————–
Please – the only things the two have in common were they were successful and didn’t like to give the media a lot of info. Noll, however, focused on putting his players first and still, to this very day, shuns interviews. Even former players can’t get in touch with him – his personality was as a private man.

Belichick would run the score up on a game that was absolutely not in doubt with seconds left all through 2007 because he was mad an assistant coach left him – he also showed zero professionalism to how he handled the situation with his being the Head Coach of the Jets and Browns.

    jsho55 says: Jan 21, 2013 5:19 PM

At the end of the day he did what was required of him. He just lost a playoff game….If I was in his shoes I probably would not want to run to the media for an interview either.
    —————————————————–
You wouldn’t want to – but you do it. Plenty of other coaches have done it. Man up and show leadership. How you handle success is at least as important as how you handle failure.

Because when we all lose – especially in a big game – what everyone wants to do is sit down and talk about their disappointments. If he did what he was required to do, then he did his job. Sorry, CBS that you couldn’t get more out of him. This is where having real journalists and not just former football players comes in real handy.

Personally I have no problem with it. It’s been goin on for so long nobody else should really have a problem with it either. But I digress……

BB will win 12-14 more games next year and the show will go on strong. I bet that 3/4 of the playoff teams this year will not get back to the tournament. But hey Im sure those coaches are probably real awesome with the media. I’ll take the 750 winning percentage any day
    —————————-
Go back 15-25 years, change it to Miami, and you have the Shula/Marino Dolphin teams. Almost always in the playoffs, flashy, no SB wins. Fast forward to the 21st century, and you have the Brady/Belichick Pats–almost always in the playoffs, flashy, zero legitimate SB wins and none at all in the last eight years.

There’s nothing wrong with winning during the regular season, but that’s not what it’s all about.

  107. fearthehoody says: Jan 22, 2013 12:16 AM

These Current Pats comparisons to the past Dolphins is hilarious! Because all you Jets, Raiders, Lions, Browns, Cowboy, Bills, add any other pathetic franchise, would rather miss the playoffs every year and be irrelevant than be the Pats and not winning in the playoffs every year. Because your only a good team if you win the super bowl every year

It’s obvious your hatred of Bill B clouds any logic you may possess. I am not a Pats fan but a Steeler fan who has watched his teams have lots of success against us and many other teams. Name another team that gets as far each year as the Pats do? If you are a Raven fan you have my sympathy …..you know how to lose the big ones too.

Because no QB says elite more than Matt Cassel right? Not to mention those weak Indianapolis Colts teams and their 2nd rate QB that they’d beat to go to their Superbowls. What a wuss that Bellichick is. Not a real coach at all.

Shannon, someone call the national guard because every network that is broadcasting the NFL is killing the CBS pregame show.

  111. datageek94 says: Jan 23, 2013 2:30 PM

    mrfrostyj:
You are making my point. Indy was a year in year out 10+ game winner with a less than average defense and a weak running game because they had a truly elite quarterback. What happened when they lost Peyton Manning?

Look at coaches over the last 15 years. How many have won superbowls with a quarterback like a John Elway (or a Tom Brady) or a Steve Young or an Donovan McNabb, but have been complete failures after said quarterback retired or moved on and they struggled to find a quarterback?

I am convinced that the reputation of head coaches in today’s NFL derives in large part from whether they have a truly elite quarterback or not, and Bill is no doubt a good coach, but take out of the equation one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the game, and you’ll see a very different result.

Oh, and remember, Jeff Hostetler won a Super Bowl. As Chris Berman would say, “That’s why they play the game.”

  112. patssteelersorgiants says: Jan 25, 2013 1:58 AM

Jeff Hostetler could be cut in half and each side would still have more talent than Boomer.
