Look at coaches over the last 15 years. How many have won superbowls with a quarterback like a John Elway (or a Tom Brady) or a Steve Young or an Donovan McNabb, but have been complete failures after said quarterback retired or moved on and they struggled to find a quarterback?

I am convinced that the reputation of head coaches in today’s NFL derives in large part from whether they have a truly elite quarterback or not, and Bill is no doubt a good coach, but take out of the equation one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the game, and you’ll see a very different result.

Oh, and remember, Jeff Hostetler won a Super Bowl. As Chris Berman would say, “That’s why they play the game.”

Go back 15-25 years, change it to Miami, and you have the Shula/Marino Dolphin teams. Almost always in the playoffs, flashy, no SB wins. Fast forward to the 21st century, and you have the Brady/Belichick Pats–almost always in the playoffs, flashy, zero legitimate SB wins and none at all in the last eight years.

There’s nothing wrong with winning during the regular season, but that’s not what it’s all about.

Please – the only things the two have in common were they were successful and didn’t like to give the media a lot of info. Noll, however, focused on putting his players first and still, to this very day, shuns interviews. Even former players can’t get in touch with him – his personality was as a private man.

Belichick would run the score up on a game that was absolutely not in doubt with seconds left all through 2007 because he was mad an assistant coach left him – he also showed zero professionalism to how he handled the situation with his being the Head Coach of the Jets and Browns.
