Both teams finished the seasons very poorly which used to be uncharacteristic of Kubiak teams. 2007-09 The Texans were a combined 10-2 over the last 4 games of the season. 2010-12, the Texans are 3-9 over the same last 4 games.

Both 2012 and 2011 the Texans had the #1 seed on the line with 3 games to go and neither team could secure a first round bye.

But JJ Watt in 2012, Andre having a career year, Arian still being Arian, Schaub having his 3rd 4000+ yd season.

The Texans were definitely a better overall team in 2011 and the Pro Bowl votes show that. Wade Smith had a bad year, Brown had a bad year (for him), and Daniels didn’t have a great year either.

But the Texans certainly didn’t get weaker by losing Mario, and the Cushing injury hurt their defense more than anyone can know.

I wouldn’t worry about the Colts catching up just yet – despite their record, they still have a ton of building to do, and they won’t be playing for a sick coach next year.

The team got weaker in the 2012 offseason after losing the right side of their O-line and Mario Williams, and the Brian Cushing injury didn’t help matters.

Unless the Texans have a good offseason, it’s entirely plausible that the Colts (who have a ton of cap space and a rapidly developing QB) overtake them.
