Packers expect Derek Sherrod to compete for job

OTKWIMR173.JPG AP

Thanks to a broken leg, the Packers haven’t gotten much out of Derek Sherrod in the two years since they made him a first-round pick.

Sherrod broke his leg in Week 15 of the 2011 season and never made it off the PUP list this season, leaving the Packers scrambling when right tackle Bryan Bulaga was lost for the season as well. Weston Hodkiewicz of the Green Bay Press-Gazette reports that it’s still unknown whether Sherrod, who also suffered nerve damage, will be ready in time for the start of the offseason program. Offensive line coach James Campen is expecting him to be ready for the season either way.

“I expect him to be back and competing for a spot,” Campen said. “He was just on the cusp of doing some very good things when he got hurt. It was there and unfortunately we had the injury in Kansas City and it’s taken a little bit longer than we had thought to get ready, but we expect him to be back and ready to go.”

Bulaga expects to be back for training camp, opening up the possibility that the Packers will field the offensive line bookends that they hoped to get by using first rounders in 2010 and 2011 on them. At the very least, they’ll hope for spirited competition as part of the effort to cut down on the 51 sacks allowed in 2012.

It was a terrible sort of break. If you go back and watch it, it’s not fun.

and they aren’t going to get much from him. First, lets recall he was pulled from a lot of games because he couldn’t block: run or pass, didn’t matter.
Second, Mc and Don was frustrated at his on again off again performances.
Third, this guy, yes he had a horrendous injury but a year and a half to heal? Maybe in a 40 year old not a yound stud.
Bottom line, this guy did not do the things he neeed to do to get in shape. When his leg was physically ready, IMHO, he was way overweight and out of shape and would not have been ready until the season was over. To me the later is called desire and its one thing to want the pay check its another to want to earn the paycheck.

Good luck with this guy. I hear the work ‘bust’ around the corner.

Ya the Packers expected him in camp in the fall and he was a no show still in rehab. Hopefully they will draft a couple of decent O linemen and use this guy as a backup because thats all he is ever going to be. He didn’t have much talent to begin with

remember andrew datko!! he’s the nasty left tackle of their future

i dunno, when he was in pre-injury he played very poorly

Read this as Ted Thimpson saying “I drafted the right guys already” and that he will pick another under performing “best guy available” in the first round. He won a Super Bowl with Mike Sherman’s guys and has gone out the past 2 years at the division level with his guys after replacing 14 starters…face it Packer fans…A-Rod fell in his lap and after that he hasn’t done much…did you see Matthews get stiffed by Joe Staley? The window has closed and it is time to rebuild without Jennings, Woodson and, hopefully, Finley. Now we will see how good TT really is.

Yeah Casey Hayward and Randall Cobb were horrible picks right?

Lynn Dickey had a two year recovery from a badly broken leg back in the day and ended up having a reasonable career with the Packers. The whispers about Sherrod certainly don’t give much hope though.

LOL at the “window closing” stuff. The right ingredients come in next year and the Packers are back in the Super Bowl, absolutely nothing other than the usual roster turnover happens, and the Packers are still in the upper 10% of the NFC even with a gimpy OL and a defense full of players who’d rather not tackle.

You people are crazy. Sherrod will take over for Newhouse who is over matched at times. They will replace Lang and have a solid O-line next year. Sherrod did not play much and was a little raw but still has a lot of upside. The Packers will continue to have success and own the North for the foreseeable future. Every year is not a Superbowl year but with our starters and some more defensive lineman the Pack will still beat the majority of what the NFL fields year in and year out.

Ironically his injury was primarily the fault of the current starting LT Newhouse. Sherrod was in at RT for Bulaga (who I’m losing faith will ever play a full season) and Newhouse was schooled badly and they rolled up on Sherrod. I guess that’s one way to save your job, Marshall!

No clue what to expect from DS in the future, with very little field experience, but we certainly know another tackle or two is needed.

    _______

Rodgers, Matthews, Raji, Jennings, Nelson, Collins, Got Woodson into town. Not Sherman guys and good finds in undrafted FA like Shields.

TT drafts for scheme. That’s why the Packers don’t run to the FA pool every time someone gets hurt.

When MM came in and wanted zone blocking, so TT drafted as such.

When Capers came to town switched to the 3-4. They go out and get CM3and Raji.

After Sherman’s draft in 04 all the players from the class were out of the league in 2 or 3 seasons.

Either your quite silly or I need to wish you a happy trolling.

Sherrod is horrible and they know it. This is putting him on notice if he doesn’t perform he will be on the bench for the rest of his career. He does have upside but doesn’t have a clue pass protecting. He always leaves guys unblocked or needs help taking on rushers. Without a running game the Packers will always have OL problems. GB offense was very predictable last year.

Run the ball guys and you will see most of these OL problems will go away. Newhouse is not that bad. I think GB drafts a Guard to replace Lang.

Yeah that was my thought too. The two of “Mike Sherman’s guys” that started in that Super Bowl were Cullen Jenkins and Scott Wells. Chad Clifton was one of Ron Wolf’s draft picks.

The other 19 guys were all brought in by Thompson.

  16. deltaoracle says: Jan 21, 2013 3:34 PM

They need to get a LT somewhere. Newhouse is a marginal starter, one of the weaker links on the team. The draft should be all about OL, DL, and LBs unless they have another gem like Rodgers fall to them. And that reminds me they need a backup QB too. Harrell can’t walk three steps without falling over.

Anyone ripping on TT is either has zero knowledge about the team, not a Packer fan or both! TT has done a very good job!

Nobody can expect to be right 100% of the time, except my wife.

If Ted Thompson makes the correct call on 70% of his drafts and acquisitions, he’s doing pretty damn well. I just hope he finds a few diamonds in the rough this coming year.

Aside from the fact that 48 of the 53 players on the 2010 Superbowl team were TT draft picks/UDFA

    Read a book.

I like how the jealous trolls come out and claim Sherrod has no talent. What is this based on, his very limited opportunity? You do realize his rookie year when he was hurt there was basically no training camp for him because of the cba. MM wont put a rookie in at LT with no training camp. They practiced him at guard out of necessity.

  21. jjclark28 says: Jan 21, 2013 8:54 PM

I remember Sherrod looking terrible in preseason last year but the couple games he played in during the regular season before the injury he showed improvement. If he can stay healthy, he’ll get his chance. That being said, they could still use some prospects at tackle. The secondary is what needs help though. There pass defense is awful, it pains me to watch them get killed on 3rd downs over and over.

  22. axespray says: Jan 22, 2013 2:54 PM

He held his own against John Abraham, Justin Houston, and Tamba Hali…
Not saying he full on shut ‘em all down, but he didn’t look like a joke out there (compared to Newhouse).
