First: I have nothing but great things to say about Charlie (his was the first jersey I ever had).

The most amazing thing, to me, though, has always been that when he retired, as an old guy (39) he was the #1 receiver of all time, with 750 receptions.

Which puts Rice’s 1,549 into it’s amazing context.

Actually, Charlie’s pro football career consisted of 43 NFL seasons and 1 AFL season. This is worth noting if only because Joiner was the last active NFL player to have played in the AFL when he retired in 1986.

Lord knows I remember his playing days, and that I am FAR from young, however how could it POSSIBLY been that LONG of a career. It simply does not seem THAT much time has passed! It doesn’t seem that Dan Fouts has been gone that long, however it MUST be the case I reckon.

It was hard for me to put Mandy Moss in my top five, but he like the other four changed the position if you really look into history (Or profootballreference.com).

Joiner was such a consistent player, and was a great coach and mentor.

His career is even more impressive when you consider the fact that when he was WR coach in San Diego, KC, and Buffalo those teams were near the top of the NFL in offensive production.

He had a great run as a player and then as a coach. Pretty awesome to have one great career in life let alone two.

He spent 12 more years in the NFL then I am years old (32). That’s crazy. Enjoy your retirement Mr. Joiner, it seems well deserved.

Do you know that for a fact? Lots of ex-players get into coaching primarily to keep busy and stay in the game. Not all of them are hard charging climbers. Maybe he was just happy coaching what he knew best.

A good friend of mine from high school played OL for 10 years for the Cardinals. He is now the offensive line coach for another high school in the area and couldn’t be happier.
