Broncos guard Chris Kuper spent all of last offseason recovering from surgery after a nasty left ankle dislocation in the final week of the 2011 season.

Kuper didn’t suffer the same injury, but he’s going to be on the rehab track again this year. Kuper needs to have surgery to repair a break in his left fibula, a less serious issue than the several broken bones and torn ligaments resulting from his ankle dislocation.

“This one is less traumatic,” Kuper said, via Mike Klis of the Denver Post. “It doesn’t have all the other things wrong in there so I’m optimistic it will be a normal recovery.”

Per Klis, not everything in the surgery “took” last time which led Kuper to go to a different surgeon in Charlotte this time around. The break was discovered in early December and Kuper missed the final four games before returning for the Broncos’ playoff loss to the Ravens.

Kuper’s injury forced him to pass on a chance to go to the Pro Bowl. Kuper was the second alternate in the AFC at guard, but the spot will go to Kuper’s teammate Zane Beadles instead.
