Colts promote Joe Gilbert to offensive line coach

The Colts didn’t look all that far for Harold Goodwin’s replacement as the team’s offensive line coach.

In a statement Tuesday, the team announced that Joe Gilbert would be promoted from assistant offensive line coach to the top job. Gilbert was a longtime collegiate assistant, most recently at the University of Illinois, before making the jump to the Colts in 2012.

“We are extremely excited about Joe coaching our offensive line,” said Colts head coach Chuck Pagano in the team’s statement. “He did a great job last year. Joe brings great energy and passion to that room, and stresses fundamentals and technique. He expects a lot from his players and will continue to develop that unit into one of the best in the NFL.”

Colts General Manager Ryan Grigson recently said that one of his priorities for the offseason is to construct an offensive line that allows fewer hits on quarterback Andrew Luck. While a slew of injuries contributed to the shaky effort by the line, there’s definitely room to upgrade on talent a year after Grigson concentrated on filling skill positions on offense.
