Champ Bailey to play in record-tying 12th Pro Bowl

Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey will do something that only two players in NFL history have done before him: Play in a dozen Pro Bowls.

Sunday’s Pro Bowl will be the 12th of Bailey’s career, which ties him with Randall McDaniel and Will Shields for the most Pro Bowl appearances in NFL history. Bailey has been in the NFL for 14 seasons and has been selected to the Pro Bowl in all of them except two, his rookie year and his injury-plagued 2008 season. Unlike most stars, Bailey always plays in the Pro Bowl when he is chosen.

Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez could have joined Bailey, McDaniel and Shields in the Dozen Pro Bowl Club, but he pulled out of Sunday’s game with an injury. Gonzalez has actually been selected to the Pro Bowl 13 times, but has twice pulled out.

The record for most Pro Bowl selections belongs to former Oilers/Titans offensive lineman Bruce Matthews, who played in 10 Pro Bowls and was selected to four others. Gonzalez, Reggie White and Jerry Rice are the three players in NFL history to earn 13 Pro Bowl selections.

  1. Feel bad for Gonzo getting “injured” in his last game – Would think he would want to go out in Hawaii in a pro bowl – If thats your last game then thats impressive.

That also leads me to believe Gonzo will come back for another year.

  2. Gregbeau, yeah I guess everyone that voted for champ during the regular season should have waited until the playoffs so then they couldn’t even vote at all. Come on. Champ had another pro bowl caliber year, just happened to get torched a few times by a very good receiver who is 12 years younger than champ

  3. Was a very very good player, but now?? No disrespect but he got burned multiple times and cost his team a chance to beat the Pats this post season.

  4. So you are telling us there is a stat for most pro bowl appearances as well as selection? Can anyone else see how much of a joke this has become? The pro bowl is just a jv squad playing in Hawaii.

He’s just glad Torrey Smith isn’t playing in the Pro Bowl.

Um, that’s cute and all, but if Torrey Smith was actually playing in the pro bowl then they would be on the same team.

How you managed to get 64+ thumbs up is beyond me.

Football 101 my friend…..you know NFC versus AFC…

    Champ, that you?

  7. Easy to see who got the better of the Portis (who’s biggest claim to fame was the clown outfits) trade.

  8. Bailey allowed 2 TDs in the playoff game against the Ravens, which was bad. What people who claim that his skills are diminishing clearly are not aware of is the number of TDs he allowed in the regular season, and that would be 1. 1 TD, all year. So, sure, he is as much to blame as anyone for the Broncos’ loss to the Ravens (well, maybe not as much as Rahim Moore). But if you think he is no longer a top tier NFL corner, than you either don’t watch or don’t understand football.

  9. This is unrelated..but does anyone know what happened to the probowl skills challenges? That was the only good part of the probowl

  10. This just says what a joke the pro bowl really is…a popularity contest instead of actual game play determining the rosters.

  11. everybody listen up. He got torched for 1 TD where Torrey Smith made a great play. The first one wasn’t his fault. They played cover 3 and the safety bit on the dig rout coming in from the other side…
He didn’t look great on that play but he is the wrong person to blame for the first TD…
    just sayin
