Sean didn’t make the call on either the interim HC (Vitt), or the interim interim HC (Kromer); he had been suspended since April. There was never any doubt Sean was coming back to the Saints; they have built a solid organization over the last seven years and he would have been crazy to walk away from that. Saints fans are moving in and looking forward to 2013. All you Vikings and Falcons fans, along with the other assorted haters, can continue to live in the past. Looking forward to the Saints making the off season moves needed to manage the cap, and also the draft. Hope you enjoyed your one year at the top Falcon fans; your Daddy is back to spank you again next season. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss…

Also, if you check the facts you will notice that in the 3 years for which they were accused, the Saints were in the 4th of teams for penalties assessed.
Name ONE player, the Saints actually carted off. Favre was injured in a playoff game the week BEFORE they played the Saints.
Fact: The only “cartoff”, that happened was Pierre Thomas RB New Orleans Saints getting knocked out during a playoff game on the goal line against the 49ers last year. Oh, yes, GODdell did not hand out a fine or suspension for that knockout.

What injuries? I don’t think one person has been able to say that any Saints player intentionally
injured another player. Your own statement indicates the NFL definition says: Exchange of Money for injury to a player. I ask you again, what injuries were committed? By your premise, it’s like arresting someone for murder, but no murder has been committed.

This shows a complete lack of understanding what the NFL determined a bounty was. It DID NOT matter if an injury happened with-in the rules or outside of the rules. It DID NOT matter if the injuries were accomplished intentionally or unintentionally. All that mattered was the fact that players WERE PAYING each other when an opponent was injured. Exchanging MONEY for INJURIES is basically CELEBRATING that injury. That paints a negative light on the NFL, especially if the information got out that the NFL knew about it and did nothing. Stop acting like the NFL said the Saints were intentionally injuring opponents and playing outside of the rules on the field for money. That is a falsehood and complete misreprensentation of what the NFL accused the Saints of.

Sean Payton didn’t manage his staff well this season either. Something that no one talks about is how he purposely set the team up to fail. He picks a position coach to be the interim HC for 10 games because he too was suspended 6 weeks for his participation in the bounty stuff. Then there’s an interim-interim HC for the other 6 games. There is ZERO chance a team can succeed like that.

So why do I think he did it purposely? To remind everyone that he is irreplaceable. If he selects someone capable to be the interim HC throughout the season and the team does well, makes the playoffs, etc., then it looks real bad for Payton considering he was implicated in the scandal and his contract ended this year. You’d have a Bruce Arians in Indy situation, except no one would fire the guy who has cancer. You’d cut loose the guy whose contract was ending and who was held responsible for the bounty program.

Sean Payton looked out for only himself, set the team up to fail, but the people of New Orleans are too busy directing their anger at the NFL and Goodell to notice.

Yes, the Saints pay for performance program included cash incentives for good plays (e.g., fumble recoveries, pick-six, hard hits, etc.) and fines for illegal hits (e.g., personal fouls).

I understand how you could be unaware of this facet of the program. The media tended to ignore this key fact because it made the Saints pay for performance system seem much less sinister, and therefore, would take away from their sensationalist headlines. Can’t let facts get in the way of a good story, you know. Who Dat!

I can’t tell whether what they are saying is anger over the supposed “bounty gate” or the fact that they are terrified of having to play a motivated, angry Saints team complete with hypercompetetive Payton, Brees, and the rest for the next few years.

As in a player didn’t intentionally hurt another.

A player is playing so hard and fast during the game that they certainly cannot stop, think about whether or not the blow they are about to deliver is going to injure the other player and then take something off of the hit to make sure the other player isn’t hurt.

Therein lies the issue.
As I said, practically speaking, there is no difference.

I still don’t see how it helped them win any games.
These guys play in an insane fashion ALL of the TIME,

So that is what you get out of his statements??? It’s very clear his issue was with Gregg Williams and he was the leader of the bounty. Payton even goes as far as saying he could have prevented it. What do you get out of his comments? Just curious. It’s pretty clear to me and every other football fan that isn’t a Saint fan.

This is my last post on the bounty issue Whodat Nation. After this moment I’m moving on to next year. This is what I think happen. I believe that this starting the year we won the Super Bowl. Media Day there was some confusion about something that occurred there. I don’t remember what it was but I remember looking at the NFL network and some of the reports saying that Roger Goodell was pissed off. Then it was the stunt Shawn Peyton pulled at the scouting combine when the liquor that Jerry Jones provided for the Cowboys. I remember laughing about that but, when Roger Goodell was interviewed he didn’t come across like he found it funny. So, the bounty scandal starts. And, Roger sees an opportunity to put the Saints in their place. He tells that he heard that they were running a bounty program. Shaw Peyton is aware of the PFP but he never associates with what Roger Goodel calls a bounty. “SO, he says there’s not bounty program in place. Then you have the former employee who comes forth, and in the mind of RG this Saints have lied to him. He’s angry in the height of his anger he hands down punishment. At some point in this process he realizes that he went overboard. But, the players complicates things because the fight back. Now, there’s no way Roger can reverse course on the suspensions without looking weak. He sticks to his guns and the rest his history.
I honestly don’t think that Roger wanted to suspension to Peyton for the year. But, when the players pushed this into the public he had no choice but to stick to his guns.

Brees should take a page out of Paytons book and man up. Payton will quickly be forgiven and people will once again respect him. With all his bickering and finger pointing Brees has allowed the mess to linger longer than it should have, and has lost the respect of many as a result.

Payton did not “take the high road.” He couldn’t fight the punishment because he had no recourse, no union, no deSmith. If he wanted to be reinstated, he had to do what Roger told him to do. So he confessed without actually confessing.

It’s a shame all of you can’t or refuse to see that.

Paul Tagliabue also says he regrets not managing his staff better. It can be difficult when your second in command goes rogue. Also, everything Payton says must be understood in the context that Goodell would have suspended him for life if he disagreed with Goodell but he would have lost the players if he went against them publicly, so all he can do is make vague statements about taking responsibility.
