Argos GM: Armstead a first-round NFL talent

AP

The Patriots signed defensive lineman Armond Armstead yesterday, and his old boss thinks they got a steal.

The former Southern Cal standout, who left the program after suffering a heart attack, played for the Toronto Argonauts last season, and Argos general manager Jim Barker had nothing but praise for him.

”He’s a phenomenal young man. We don’t often in our league get NFL first round [draft picks],” Barker told Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald. ”He would have been a low first, early second. But we don’t get those guys before they go through your league. So it was a pleasure for us to be able to have Armond.

“It’s just rare that an NFL team can get a first round pick without having to use one.”

Barker said Armstead went through numerous test before he was cleared to play, and was able to play every game.

That should allay some of the health concerns.

”We would never play a player who didn’t pass a physical. We actually had him because of the issues he had,” Barker said. ”He went to see cardiac specialists. He checked out fine, and never missed a practice.”

Other teams showed an interest in Armstead, and if there are no medical problems, the Patriots may have unearthed a contributor.

  1. This is an outstanding acquisition. Adam Schefter wrote about him deciding on an NFL team a few weeks back and said he is comparible to a high round draft pick. He has been compared position wide to Richard Seymour and can play the 3 technique.

Great addition to the D line.

  2. Patriots got a steal. There are lots of NFL caliber players in the CFL, alot have jumped to the NFL in recents years and excelled. Cameron Wake is just one example.

For those who think Tebow would be a good fit in the CFL, that couldnt be further from the truth. The CFL is a big-time passing league and he wouldnt cut it.

  3. Kind of begs the question…why the heck didn’t Trestman grab this guy if he was a first round talent? And why wouldn’t Armstead want to play for Trestman? Seems odd.

  4. Why can the Pats sign this guy but the Steelers have to wait until after the Super Bowl to cut Rainey?

  5. “Kind of begs the question…why the heck didn’t Trestman grab this guy if he was a first round talent? And why wouldn’t Armstead want to play for Trestman? Seems odd.”

He only played in the same league as Trestman, he never played for him as far as I know.

  6. Love the questions from Bears fans about playing for Mark Trestman. He coached another CFL team and has been more concerned about getting an NFL gig than securing the best FA in the CFL

Lets see I am a player choosing between playing for Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots or Mark Trestman the new HC of the Bears.

    Game/Set/Match

    New England Patriots !!!!!!!!!!!!

He didnt play for Trestman, so it isnt that big of a deal that he signed else where. I would however speculate that it is possible Trestman would have had interest, but Armstead had already chosen the Pats before the Bears chose Trestman, just a though

  8. Tebow might work in the CFL. Spread everyone out for read option runs and on passes the WR get a running start so somebody should be able to get separation

  9. Armstead had to cut the interview short as he was late for his shift as the night manager of the Mississauga Tim Horton’s.

  10. For those of you asking why Trestman didn’t get him for the Bears. The answer is because Armstead chose to sign with the Patriots. It had nothing to do with Trestman. Coming out of the CFL, he had his choice to sign wherever he wanted.

  11. Of course the Pats will have to have a cardiologist on the bench in addition to an orthopedist for all of their games.

  12. How does an athlete in his early 20s have a heart attack nd then subsequently get cleared as if nothing is wrong?

Because Trestman didn’t coach the Argos . . . The CFL isn’t just one team. He had no connection to Trestman.

Maybe he bagged Trestman’s old lady.

  15. Nice to see that the Pats are using their new-found free time to try and prop the window that is quickly closing on Tom Brady…

  16. Too funny:

The Patriots cheated to sign him.

    He is overrated.

He has medical issues that will keep him from playing.

The Argos and CFL are lying about his level of talent.

The one thing I did not read was:

Thirty-two teams had an opportunity to sign Armstead. Congratulations to the Patriots for making it happen.

  17. Devin McCourty is a PFT fan. I saw this posted on his Facebook.

The signing is a low risk ($600K guaranteed), high reward (All CFL in his rookie season) type of signing.

Yeaaa, not like he had an MVP-caliber season, and the offense didn’t put up the second-highest total points scored in a season in NFL history…No, that Tom Brady is definitely slowing down, that window is definitely slamming shut as we speak
