Long before he had to scheme against him in the biggest game of the year, 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was a huge Joe Flacco fan.
Fangio was a Ravens assistant when Flacco was drafted, and in the early days of OTAs, Fangio told then-boss John Harbaugh they had a keeper.
“I remember his first sessions as a rookie, I said to John Harbaugh: ‘You have your horse to ride for 10 years, at least.’” Fangio said, via Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle. “I felt he could be a great quarterback in the league, and I still feel that way.”
Flacco has impressed everyone with his deep ball ability this posteason, but Fangio said he’s more than just a bombs-away passer.
“He’s got a big arm,” Fangio said.” He throws the ball effortlessly. The game isn’t too big for him. He’s calm. He’s confident. And he’s capable of making all the throws.”
Flacco’s thrown eight touchdowns and no picks this postseason, with a 114.7 record.
But most importantly, he has eight playoff wins, and the chance at number nine next weekend.
