Center Scott Wells’ first year as a member of the Rams was filled with injuries and he’s starting the offseason recovering from knee surgery.

Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Wells had an arthroscopic procedure to repair torn cartilage in his right knee recently. It’s the same knee that Wells had operated on last spring. Wells made it back from that injury to start the season, but broke his foot in the opener and wound up on injured reserve for nine games before returning to the lineup. Per Thomas, Wells hurt his knee in his first practice back from the foot injury and played in pain the rest of the way.

The Rams offensive line was better with Wells in the lineup, allowing nine sacks in the final six games after giving up 26 in the first 10 contests. Offensive line coach Paul Boudreau thinks Wells, a Pro Bowl selection in 2011, and the line will be even more effective next season.

“He’s established here now,” Boudreau said. “He’s got a house here. He’s not commuting back and forth. I think it’ll be an easier second year. Because in eight or nine years, he’s really never been hurt. He’s played with broken bones and stuff, but he’s never missed as much time as he’s missed this year.”

Assuming no further setbacks, Wells should be able to take part in the Rams’ offseason work after recovering from the surgery on his knee.
