Report: Patriots sign another CFL product

Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback Durant is tackled by Winnipeg Blue Bombers' Vega during their CFL game in Winnipeg Reuters

The Canadian scouting bureau of the Patriots is earning its loonies this month.

The team recently signed defensive lineman Armond Armstead away from the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts and it looks like Armstead will have someone to talk to if he gets wistful about using paper money that comes in more than one color. Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe reports that the Patriots have agreed to terms with defensive end/linebacker Jason Vega of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Per the report, the Blue Bombers haven’t released him from his contract yet so nothing’s official, but the deal is believed to be for three years with less guaranteed money than Armstead, who also signed for three years, received. Vega is familiar with the area after going to college at Northeastern and Bedard spoke to a scout who compared Vega to current Patriots defensive end Rob Ninkovich.

“You see the same kind of stuff that a Ninkovich does. He does show ability to get to the quarterback with a high motor and some pretty good technique,” the scout said. “He’s an OK athlete, like Ninkovich, but he makes plays.”

Looking to our neighbors to the north for pass rush help paid off for the Dolphins. The Patriots seem to be interested in finding out if it there are any more up there like Cameron Wake.

Pats will miss the playoffs next year, their cheating reign is over.

Really looking Howard to armstead but I am not familiar with this player. I would rather have our d be better than our offense

  3. abel660 says: Jan 26, 2013 3:09 PM

How would they miss the playoffs when their D is getting better and their offense is coming off one of the best years ever?! With a weak af east division its a for sure playoff spot

Very excited about the Armstead signing.Next year the line will look like across Nink, Vince,Armstead, Jones.

Looks like this guy can rush the passer.

Last time I checked the Steelers were a REAL dynasty. We’ve won two SBs since the Patsies’ last. We embody greatness in every fiber of our being. Deal with it.

Right. We’ve been hearing that for eight years.

  12. jcmeyer10 says: Jan 26, 2013 3:24 PM

Anyone who says this is desperation is misguided I believe. They do not have a ton of draft picks and are instead signing proven players from a wide open pass happy league to fill the gap.

It seems to be more pragmatic than desperate IMHO and a wise way to trade down draft picks in a weak draft class while getting a return of players.

    Refs screwing the Seahawks.

  16. kansacity88 says: Jan 26, 2013 3:28 PM

Wow! Wasn’t Vega on the Northeastern university squad when they dropped football altogether? Haven’t heard that name in years!!! Good luck Jason! Not a Pats fan but I wish good fortune on anyone coming into the NFL from Canada!

  17. brazin99 says: Jan 26, 2013 3:29 PM

How could the Pats miss the playoffs when 6 of their games are against the likes of Miami, Jets, and Bills? A coiuple more home wins and they at .500 and another ouple road wins and they’re at 10-6 minimum. PLenty to win that division.

  18. Obama's Ballsack says: Jan 26, 2013 3:30 PM

One thing I can say about this team. They don’t ever stop working.

  19. wrenches2pipes says: Jan 26, 2013 3:31 PM

Doesn’t matter where they come from, if your the Pats.

  20. gsb333 says: Jan 26, 2013 3:35 PM

Some tough players more focused on football than women and money can come out of Canada. this is happening more and more.

As for the playoffs for the Pats… they can do almost anything they want with that system they have and still win. On top of being in a pretty week division, they’ve been walking and will walk into the playoffs fairly easily.

  21. wideright91 says: Jan 26, 2013 3:40 PM

How’s that workin’ out for you this year, Ben?

  25. darkneptune73 says: Jan 26, 2013 3:51 PM

For the Patriots to miss the playoffs, they need the LOLJets, the Bills, or the Dolphins to seriously challenge them. Do you see any of the three being a contender in 2013? I think not.

  26. mybrunoblog says: Jan 26, 2013 3:59 PM

I’m always surprised the NFL doesn’t use the CFL as more of a feeder program. I’m sure there are plenty of CFL players that could help NFL teams.

Last time I checked the Steelers missed the playoffs and there was nothing resembling greatness about them. Getting old and becoming the bottom team of the AFC North. Deal with it.

Canada has and is changing and replacing each of their various denominations to a very thin plastic-like surface bills.

  33. mjjoe76 says: Jan 26, 2013 4:33 PM

You know U.S. bills sport a variety of colors too now, right? I assume it’s part of the effort to make them harder to counterfeit.

Maybe Armstead can yearn for the days in which he could pick up a snack at a convenience store and pay with $2 coins.

Actually, the Patriots almost always have an undrafted free agent who finds a starting roll. There are plenty of players who never get drafted. Some of these guys could have been great players, but never got the chance.

  35. rajbais says: Jan 26, 2013 4:51 PM

Brandon Browner and Cam Wake are two standout CFL turned NFL players so New England is probably thinking “12 men in avid passing offenses … let’s get their best defensive players in this pass-first NFL.”

  36. iamwhodat says: Jan 26, 2013 4:55 PM

I just realized some of you ppl are just BIG HATERS! You wish your team can make the tournament 10 out of 11 years and the 1 year they missed they were 10-6. I may not like the Pats but I respect the orginazation, they have to be doing something right.

  37. thechronicjoker says: Jan 26, 2013 5:15 PM

It all comes in cycles, only patriot fans know, their reign is over. Excluding the Jets.

  39. lesterclan says: Jan 26, 2013 5:33 PM

I live in Winnipeg and am a fan of the Blue Bombers. Good, cheap pickup for the Pats. Comparisons to Ninkovich aren’t necessarily accurate though. He’s more of a long, lean OLB/DE tweener type. Think a less athletic Aldon Smith and you’d get the picture. However, he is a high motor high effort player. He was certainly the only really consistent pass rush threat for the team the past couple seasons. As a run stuffer though, it might leave you less than impressed. Could be a nice situational guy for them though.

  44. cgsuddeath says: Jan 26, 2013 5:56 PM

Big Deal.Who cares, they are out of the playoffs and that’s enough for me.

  45. fenrecords says: Jan 26, 2013 6:35 PM

I think the Pats are pretty smart by hitting up the CFL. How long will it be before Trestman and the Bears start doing it? And in regards to the Pats not making the playoffs because they are no longer “cheating”, unless they leave the AFC east, they will be in the playoffs for a long time. I just see any SB wins

  46. mediasloppy says: Jan 26, 2013 6:49 PM

Belichick is always bringing in guys that make you scratch your head, but they fit his system in lots of cases. Personally, I think he does it to look like a mad genius. And I’m Not a big fan of him or his poor sportsmanship…

  47. dyhrdpatsfan says: Jan 26, 2013 7:00 PM

Still one of the youngest teams in the league. Everyone else in the league is sleeping. That’s why they make the playoffs every year. Moves like this…

  48. patssteelersorgiants says: Jan 26, 2013 7:25 PM

I think Belichick is ahead of another trend as usual. Funny how everyone hates him for spygate but Andy Reid’s son having steroids at camp is ok and Payton is ok for bounties.

  49. 1972wasalongtimeago says: Jan 26, 2013 7:54 PM

The chances of a CFL player making it in the NFL is like the chances a porn star makes it in mainstream movies. Can it happen? Sure. Will it happen? Not likely.

  50. completefan says: Jan 26, 2013 11:53 PM

This is not a pressing issue for the Bombers either. They have a lot of work ahead of them, moving into the new stadium with, I think, three mediocre quarterbacks and not the greatest offensive weapons. I see the Bombers and Ticats struggling to avoid a western crossover in the playoffs again.

  51. jameslongstaffe says: Jan 27, 2013 1:24 AM

Good job Jason Vega!! A nice young man, & that is the most important thing in life:) Go Bombers

  52. johnnybuc44 says: Jan 27, 2013 1:42 AM

Well, I live in Winnipeg, I’m a season ticket holder of the Bombers, and I can say that Vega is only “pretty good”, certainly not dominant, or even the best defender on the team. Don’t expect much from this signing.
