Flacco can join Montana, Young in NFL postseason history

Joe Flacco AP

If Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco plays well against the 49ers in the Super Bowl, he’s set to accomplish something that only a couple of of 49ers Hall of Famers have done in NFL playoff history.

Flacco has thrown eight touchdown passes and no interceptions so far in this postseason. The only quarterbacks to finish a postseason with at least nine touchdown passes and no interceptions are Steve Young, who threw nine touchdowns with no interceptions in the playoffs after the 1994 season, and Joe Montana, who threw 11 touchdown passes and no interceptions in the playoffs after the 1989 season.

So if Flacco throws at least one touchdown and no picks he’ll tie Young. With three touchdowns and no picks he’ll equal Montana. Montana and Young were both Super Bowl MVPs in those seasons.

If the Ravens win the Super Bowl, it will be the ninth postseason game they’ve won in Flacco’s first five NFL seasons. Only Tom Brady, who was also the starting quarterback for nine postseason wins in his first five seasons, has been the winning quarterback in the playoffs so many times so early in his career.

With a big game on Sunday, Flacco can cement his reputation as one of the NFL’s best big-game quarterbacks.

Brady didn’t have the defense or running game Flacco does. Comparing them is laughable.

  2. marcinhouston says: Jan 28, 2013 1:27 PM

He could also be the only QB other than Montana or Young to win a Superbowl in which the 49ers were one of the teams playing.

    No average Joe!

  4. ravenator says: Jan 28, 2013 1:30 PM

Flacco haters will have nothing to talk about this offseason. Loving it! Go Ravens!

  5. remziz4 says: Jan 28, 2013 1:31 PM

The last thing we need is for everyone else to think Joe Flacco is as good as he thinks he is.

  6. rtookey says: Jan 28, 2013 1:32 PM

Or his receivers can cement themselves as big-gamers… Throwing a jump ball to the side line 15 times a game doesnt constitute a good qb…

Show this under appreciated guy some love.

  8. armchairqb says: Jan 28, 2013 1:33 PM

Flacco will throw 2 INTs. Book it.

  9. u4iadman says: Jan 28, 2013 1:34 PM

Kudos to Flacco, I dont think of him as being among the best, but the stats dont lie. He’s no Montana/Young to be fair though.
Brady cant be the best QB in history when you look at his playoff TD/INT stats….Brady just doesnt get it done like the best.

Not sure there was a tougher road to the Super Bowl and flacco outplayed Brady And manning on the road

    False.

  13. TSizzleBallSoHard says: Jan 28, 2013 1:40 PM

But he’s still not elite right. Lol Get it Joe and prove the haters wrong!

  14. hurr1cane08 says: Jan 28, 2013 1:41 PM

Cue the Flacco haters in 3-2-1…

But seriously, since Cam was canned, Flacco has a 12:1 TD to INT ratio, 56% comp., 331 yd/game, 107 QB rating.

    That’s a *damn* good quarterback.

  15. 49erstim says: Jan 28, 2013 1:42 PM

That is elite company for sure and Flacco deserves more credit than he receives. He came into the season talking about being a top 5 QB and many here laughed, but he has been solid and if I’m being honest I’d take him over Peyton and maybe even Eli.

  16. jh500 says: Jan 28, 2013 1:42 PM

    Elite

  17. crownofthehelmet says: Jan 28, 2013 1:43 PM

Ironically, he’ll likely join Montana and Young as QB’s who’ve thrown game-winning TD’s to a SF player.

  18. 49ersandshivabowl says: Jan 28, 2013 1:43 PM

I don’t think anybody will mistake Flacco for Young or Montana.

  19. billb49 says: Jan 28, 2013 1:44 PM

How about if he throws no touchdowns and three interceptions. Will the East Coast sports media clowns’ heads explode?

  20. fredsingleton says: Jan 28, 2013 1:44 PM

He’s a good QB, there’s just something about him that doesn’t label him as elite to me. I don’t know why.

He just doesn’t have “it” to me.

  21. wludford says: Jan 28, 2013 1:50 PM

Don’t know about the TD passes and interceptions, but I bet Flacco outplays Kaepernick and the Ravens win the Super Bowl.

  22. thebrownswillalwaysloose says: Jan 28, 2013 1:50 PM

    He can and he will…

  23. dmason85 says: Jan 28, 2013 1:51 PM

It’s funny how things work. He’ll be thought of as the 7th best QB in football if he wins. Behind the 6 guys who already have rings. If he loses or doesn’t play well, the media will toss him back to being Mark Sanchez.

    The mob is fickle.

  24. nfloracle says: Jan 28, 2013 1:52 PM

After his big game on Sunday, maybe we can all finally agree with Phil Simms that Flacco is an “elite” quarterback.

  25. radrntn says: Jan 28, 2013 1:52 PM

  29. blazecili says: Jan 28, 2013 1:56 PM

Not bad….Eli has made it through two postseasons with a single int each.

I thought that this story was going to be about Flacco winning the 5th Super Bowl by an Italian qb. There have been a couple of runner-ups: Ferragamo and Marino.

  30. bunjy96 says: Jan 28, 2013 1:57 PM

How many super bowls has he won?

  31. lightcleric says: Jan 28, 2013 1:57 PM

  35. humbleminded85 says: Jan 28, 2013 2:04 PM

He can win 3 rings, save a baby from a fire, and create a cure for all cancers- and yet still be looked down on for not being a “fantasy qb”. As long as Rice is on the team he won’t throw for 4,500 yards and that for some reason will never be acceptable to many in this fantasy football era we live in. Only number I care about is the one in the win column.

  36. heydiddlediddlerayriceupthemiddle says: Jan 28, 2013 2:08 PM

Flacco has received a lot more hate his first few seasons, even more so than Matt Ryan, who can’t even make it past the first round of the playoffs.

I’ve stuck by my QB and he’s turning into a stud. After suffering through Grbac, Wright, Boller, and a washed up Steve McNair, I’m glad to have a QB I can call a franchise QB.

I’ve always thought Flacco was one of the better QB’s in the Game.

I’m not a Ravens fan (Steelers) but having a QB in the division that good makes it difficult to defeat them.

I think the Ravens have an good chance of winning the SB.

  40. questforthesixthnotthelast2013 says: Jan 28, 2013 2:15 PM

The niners know he is good, cant hide it, he is on a harbaugh team!!!, just not the better one!!

  41. raiderlyfe510 says: Jan 28, 2013 2:16 PM

If I were Flacco’s agent I might have to steer him to the Jets in the offseason.

The way the media hypes up that garbage team, if Flacco had a year like this with the Jets the national pedestal that he would be put on would be ridiculous. Like Eli and Tom Brady.

  42. bobhk says: Jan 28, 2013 2:19 PM

Montana had 11 TD/no INT in 3 post season games. Ditto Young: 9/0 in 3 games. Flacco has one extra game.

    Please compare apples to apples.

Flacco is pretty good but to compare him to Montana and Young is a travesty.

  43. dexterismyhero says: Jan 28, 2013 2:20 PM

Elite, Top 5, HoF material…..god just stop it about all QB’s…He is and always has been a pretty good QB. He has gotten better each year….Phil Simms wasn’t even an ‘Elite QB”…..

  44. cooklynn17 says: Jan 28, 2013 2:22 PM

Um, no he can’t because what really matters is Joe Montana has 3 Superbowl rings and no ints in the Superbowl and well Flacco is just Joe Flacco, looking for his first ring.

That’s what really matters, that’s the list that counts.

  47. keepingitrealdumb says: Jan 28, 2013 2:25 PM

yeah comparing flacco to brady is laughable .. brady has to face the ravens D and he does a decent job at it .. imagine if flacco had to face that ravens D all the time .. right.

and then .. that patriot’s D is not that good .. so brady has to compensate for that .. what if flacco had to compensate for the pat D year after year after year? right.

    ————————————————-
Really? Because I can remember some big playoff games against Pittsburgh when Flacco threw it right on the money and the receivers couldn’t make the catch. Later Flacco took the blame for being unable to deliver when it was the receivers who were unable to bring in the ball.

It’s time people realized Flacco is a very good quarterback. And as a Steelers fan, I think the best thing that could happen to our team would be for Flacco to achieve this milestone and the Ravens to win the Lombardi. Nothing cures complacency quite like a “Mirror Mirror” Reality Check.

  49. lastcall81 says: Jan 28, 2013 2:27 PM

  50. elitocruz says: Jan 28, 2013 2:32 PM

flacco is a baller, I liken his game to Eli Mannings, he has been a very good postseason quarterback in the early part of his career, yes his numbers in the regular season are not amazing and he does have some awful regular season games.

But he is money in the clutch, and can make every throw in a critical situation ala Eli. I hope he gets a ring, very deserving IMO.

  51. jeffa43 says: Jan 28, 2013 2:32 PM

    Stooge…

Big Ben lead the greatest drive in 4th qtr history… 92 yards with what nfl net called the greatest bowl ever… He beat Warner who holds all the bowl passing records.

Thought I would do your homework for you. Ben 3 Afc title wins, 2 SB wins… That’s 5 championships at the age Flacco got his first Afc title..

Please do not compare the 2.

Bens first bowl was not great, but he did throw 4 TDs in Denver to put them in the Super Bowl … He also beat Manning in Indy the week before, and beat Cincy in Cincy the week before that…. After the most wins by a rookie in nfl history.

    Just saying.

  52. benroethlisberger7 says: Jan 28, 2013 2:33 PM

  55. goldrush36 says: Jan 28, 2013 2:44 PM

Flacco is a bit underrated based on what the media says about him. Quite a bit overrated in based on how he views himself… he is a good QB but he isn’t a Joe or Steve. He also faced some average to subpar and aging secondaries along the way. You folks need to remember one thing though the ravens and niners both thrive on being told they can’t. While Vegas has laid odds on the niners… pretty much everyone else has said this is Ray’s destiny and they won’t be denied.. Flacco can’t be stopped… that puts the advantage in the 49ers favor

Touche. However, I want you to note Philip Rivers’ first 5 years as a starter. Over that 5 year span he had the highest QB rating, most yards per attempt, and most importantly, the most wins. Not bad for a converted shot-putter.

  65. edgarpoe3 says: Jan 28, 2013 3:06 PM

Flacco is the Rodney Dangerfield of football. No matter what he does, he gets no respect. He beat the Colts – but it was because they had a rookie quarterback and they had the Ray factor at home. He beat Manning and the #1 seat Broncos – but it was because the DBs played poorly. He beat the Patriots, but it was because his receivers could leap and Baltimore’s defense rattled Brady.

But when the Ravens lost, it was all Flacco’s fault and back up third stringers could have done better. In reality, teams win games, not individuals. But, somehow the national media want to make it so.

  68. ajb3313 says: Jan 28, 2013 3:09 PM

This isn’t specific to Joe Flacco, but I like how the “elite” debate has come to include about a third of the league. That sort of defeats the definition of the word elite, does it not?

  69. watermelon1 says: Jan 28, 2013 3:14 PM

Ummm… that “washed up Steve McNair” still holds the best record in Ravens franchise history with a 13-3 season. FYI.

But I’ll give Flacco credit, he’s definitely put three pretty great games together at the most important time of the season. And putting great games together in a row is something I haven’t seen from Flacco since he’s been in the league. So, definitely improvement.
