Saints won’t get this year’s second-rounder back

AP

The Saints got coach Sean Payton back a bit earlier than expected, but they won’t be getting their second-round pick back.

Goodell mentioned that during an online chat on Reddit.com, via the New Orleans Times Picayune.

Asked if there was any chance of the team getting back the pick, Goodell replied: “No, the penalty will continue to include the 2nd round draft choice in 2013.”

That’s the first definite word on the pick, after some speculation it might be returned. The Saints also lost last year’s second-rounder, among other penalties.

The Saints could have certainly used the draft-pick ammunition, as they try to fix the league’s all-time worst defense (in terms of yards allowed) by shifting to a 3-4.

  1. Goodell’s word means nothing.
He said earlier they’d get the pick back if the team did what it was told to do.
What exactly have they failed to do?

What a joke! Williams will have a new team and have no long term effects of the bounty program, however the Saints organization will suffer longer due to lack of drafting

  2. Looks like another thread of Saints fans whining about getting caught running a bounty program. Cut and paste ’em boys …

  3. Absolutely ridiculous! Putting bounties on players didn’t make their 2009 season and didn’t win them a Super Bowl. Yet, Goodell has ruined their 2012 season and set the franchise back at least a year or two. To give you an idea of how much of an impact two 2nd round picks can have on a football team: Would the 49ers be playing this Sunday without Colin Kaepernick or LaMichael James? The punishment does not fit the crime! And I say that knowing how much this mess benefits me as a fan.

  4. He said they’d get it back if they cooperated. I demand to know SPECIFICALLY what the Saints did not do to not deserve to get the pick back.

  5. The city of New Orleans hates Roger Goodell. NFL fans hate him. I hate him and can’t wait to be rid of him.

The hubris shown by Commissar Goodell and the league over the last year is simply unprecedented in the history of professional sports.

  6. Payback time boys, defamation suit, fight your suspensions, Bree’s disrespects the Commish, what do you expect? Sit back and enjoy the wait till the third round.

  7. Maybe they’d get the pick back if they you know, admitted wrong doing. Saints fans are clueless.

Read Sean Payton’s statement from one week ago, jackass.

  8. His feelings are still hurt because he knows he went way overboard with the penalties. Where is Tom Benson and why isn’t he speaking up? He’s the one who should be demanding a explanation. And what were the results of the internal investigation he sanctioned? Is he holding back the results because of what they reveal, or to use it against Goodell at the opportune moment? Time put all the cards on the table and fess up or fight back.

  9. Considering everything, the sum of all the punishments to the Saints was probably not harsh enough. The players’ suspensions were cancelled, so be grateful you got that and I wouldn’t expect anything more, whiners.

  10. Goodell should have let Benson move the team to San Antonio after Katrina so we wouldn’t have to listen to the whiners. You were told to stop the bounty stuff in 2010. You didn’t and you got busted. So don’t blame Roger

  11. Serves the Saints right. Sure what Goodell did was BS. But it couldn’t have happened to a more deserving team

  12. To those who can read this, I say, do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish.

Posters! Don’t give yourselves to bullies, men who despise you, enslave you; who ridicule your lives, tell you what to watch, what to think and what to feel! Men who deceive you, command you, treat you like losers, use you as ticket fodder.
Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men – machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines, you are not cattle, you are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts! You don’t hate! Only the unloved hate; the unloved and the unnatural.

Don’t fight for bullying! Fight for liberty! In the seventeenth chapter of St. Luke, it is written that the kingdom of God is within man, not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people, have the power, the power to create memories, the power to create history! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure. Then in the name of liberty, let us use that power! Let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world! A free world that will give all the accused a chance to defend their livelihood!

By the promise of these things, dictators have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfill that promise. They never will!

Owners free themselves but they eslave the players. Now let us fight to fulfill that promise. Let us fight to free the world! To do away with team barriers! To do away with greed, with hate and intolerance! Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where football will lead to all men’s happiness. Posters, in the name of football, let us all unite!

    ===================
If what he did was BS, why would any team ‘deserve’ that? Oh yeah, Saints deserve it because they most probably destroyed your team several times over the last 6 years, lol

  14. I would work for free for a couple months to be given a shot to have access to his food while he is down here.

  15. Don’t put anything poisonous in his food, just a gentle purgative or emetic. Maybe a simple bucket of sewage dumped on his head if he dares to walk in public. I don’t want to see any permanent harm come to him while in New Orleans, but enough humiliation to serve as a permanent reminder that initiating a vendetta is not a good idea unless you can finish it.

Payback is Hell, Rog. Here’s hoping you don’t sleep a wink while in The Big Easy.

  16. Geaux cheaters! You guys think you will show the world next year. Highly dubious claim given your lack of talent at a lot of positions. You got busted! Deal with it.
