Chargers announce five more assistant coaches

Mike McCoy, former Denver Broncos' Offensive Coordinator, speaks after being introduced as the new head coach of NFL's San Diego Chargers at the team's headquarters in San Diego Reuters

The Chargers added another Cardinals refugee to Mike McCoy’s first coaching staff.

Chad Grimm will join offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt, quarterbacks coach Frank Reich and special teams coach Kevin Spencer on the San Diego staff after coaching in Arizona last season. Grimm, who is the son of Hall of Famer and former Cardinals assistant Russ Grimm, will be the defensive quality control coach for the Chargers in 2013.

Andrew Dees was named the team’s assistant offensive line coach, Craig Aukerman will assist with Spencer’s special teams units and Nick Sirianni will be the offensive quality control coach. Sirianni was the wide receivers coach in Kansas City in 2012, Dees assisted Chargers offensive line coach Joe D’Alessandris in Buffalo and Aukerman coached in Jacksonville.

The team also announced that Byron Storer will remain with the team as an assistant linebackers coach. Storer helped with the special teams on Norv Turner’s final staff and served a similar role in Tampa for two years before coming to the Chargers.

These are laughable hires. It’s clear that this franchise is headed in the wrong direction.

I find it interesting that not a single team has even attempted to interview AJ Smith since his firing.

Thats a testament to how he is viewed amongst the league. He’s a team killer. He destroys relationships and creates a rift between the players and front office.

Now he can take his arrogance where it belongs and stay up in Del Mar still convincing himself that he knew it all and everyone else was wrong.

I like how people are judging these coaches and the fact is that they are basically unknowns. If you know the Quality Control coach, you must be his relative or close friend. I’m sure these hires matter, but I for one am not qualified to judge them. I only hope that Coach McCoy and the new GM know them better than I do.

I had a feeling that we would be hiring assistant coaches but I think this is the first time we’ve had quality control coaches on staff. Interesting.
