Keisel says Flacco isn’t among the best quarterbacks, yet

350x-1 AP

Tuesday’s edition of Pro Football Talk (NBCSN, 5:00 p.m. ET) featured a visit from the NFL’s answer to Grizzly Adams — Steelers defensive end Brett Keisel.

Keisel, one of the funniest players in all of football, addressed a variety of topics with Erik Kuselias and yours truly, including whether a quarterback Keisel knows very well ranks among the likes of Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Drew Brees.

“I don’t think he’s as good as those guys right now,” Keisel said of Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco. “But I said earlier someone was asking about should he get paid.  Sure man!  We should all get paid.

“I think he’s a very good quarterback.  I think he’s starting to play his best ball and obviously he’s led these guys right down here to the biggest game of all.”

The Steelers know a thing or two (or eight) about playing in the biggest game of all.  So what will it take to return?

“I think we need to do a little rebuilding,” Keisel said.

right on. has the potential to be if he gets more consistent in the regular season. performs in the postseason. isn’t there yet.

  2. mrhojorisin says: Jan 29, 2013 11:00 PM

He’s not wrong, nor are his comments insulting. Class act.

  3. reed20ravens says: Jan 29, 2013 11:03 PM

havent heard from this team in a few weeks.
oh yea, cus they “arent among the best,” thats right…

  4. thebrownswillalwaysloose says: Jan 29, 2013 11:07 PM

Dude!? Who care’s what he thinks? What happened to losers taking their ball and going home? Like a guy who plays for one of his biggest rivals (who didn’t make the playoffs and is bitter and irrelevant) would say something positive? Take your wanna be civil war beard and go home! Damn social media will destroy us all!

  5. mrplow3 says: Jan 29, 2013 11:09 PM

Who’s gonna argue with a beard like that?

    And BTW, he’s right.

  6. truthfactory says: Jan 29, 2013 11:09 PM

Here’s the problem for Flacco… before the last 2 weeks, NO ONE would ever even consider him to be an “Elite” QB. So now after a couple good playoff games, everyone is supposed to erase their memories on how he is a slightly above average QB throughout the season year in and year out?? Nahh… he’s still the same guy we thought he was… win or lose this weekend. Pay him like a top 8 or 10 QB and move on.

  7. theysone says: Jan 29, 2013 11:10 PM

    That beard is glorious.

  8. huskersrock1 says: Jan 29, 2013 11:11 PM

Fair evaluation, Flacco is an above average QB, but if he wants 20 million I would trade him.

  9. steelcity333 says: Jan 29, 2013 11:30 PM

I agree with Keisel, Flacco is a great QB and should be paid a lot of money but is not in the elite category yet but I have a question to all you Ravens fans, especially Ravenator. How does it feel to watch your rivals hoist the Lombardi Trophy? You guys have a much better understanding of it then us Steeler fans do. You guys have had to watch us do it WAY more than we have had to watch you guys do it.

  10. unrulyondamic says: Jan 29, 2013 11:45 PM

If he wins the Super Bowl, he’ll match Peyton’s ring total. You gotta put him in the discussion. And people still talk about Romo being better??

  11. tonyugoh says: Jan 29, 2013 11:52 PM

I imagine god being jealous of that beard.

  12. andrewproughcfe says: Jan 29, 2013 11:59 PM

Keisel makes Grizzley Adams look like a 13-year old with his first peach fuzz.

  13. steelcurtainn says: Jan 30, 2013 12:01 AM

What he meant to say instead of good is he’s your average joe but he just cant come out and say that when your doing a live interview. Keisel is right on!!!!Flacco is not even close to being in the same sentence as manning, brady and brees but lucky enough to advance.

  14. ivyleaf98 says: Jan 30, 2013 12:02 AM

    He has a point.

  15. questforthesixthnotthelast2013 says: Jan 30, 2013 12:10 AM

Flacco to the steelers, A. Smith to the Ravens? Interesting
doubtful but i could see John H. Do it. Especially since flacco just ruined his rep in baltimore!

  16. deathonwings410 says: Jan 30, 2013 12:14 AM

None of this will matter when he gets a ring Sunday night…or week 1 2013.

  17. dkrauss93 says: Jan 30, 2013 12:22 AM

Deep down, Flacco’s like, can we get Mike Tannanbaum as the new gm. Flacco would get $30 mill a yr

  18. thesportsguy52 says: Jan 30, 2013 12:32 AM

The title of this article is so misleading-AS USUAL. Stop trying to instigate and just stick to describing the truth. A steeler gave a Raven QB a great compliment and support, and this moronic elite conversation lives on.

  19. blackngold4life says: Jan 30, 2013 12:57 AM

Actually all he said was “Pay the man” said NOTHIN about him being ELITE..he did pick the Ratbirds. to win the Superbowl though.

  20. gacoltfan says: Jan 30, 2013 12:58 AM

This Flacco is elite stuff is ridiculous. Manning, Brady, Brees, Rodgers are elite. After that you have a group including Ben, Flacco, Schaub, Eli, Romo, Stafford, Cutler, and Ryan. Then you have the three rookies and Kaep that most people wold probably take over Flacco. At best he would be around 10. Out of 32, hard to say that qualifies as elite.

  21. josephgattuso says: Jan 30, 2013 1:12 AM

Flacco has a 15-2 td-int ratio in the playoffs the last three years, and that’s with two game-winning touchdowns dropped.

Peyton Manning had a 3-7 td/int ratio the year he won the Super Bowl.

Flacco so far has shown to be one of the best playoff quarterbacks in NFL history. He already has as many playoff games with a 95+ qb as rating as Roethlisberger has.

And considering Flacco gets his team to the playoffs every year…

He certainly ain’t average. By the way, his defense this year is not nearly as good as the 2001, 2003, and 2004 Patriots defense, or as good as the 2005 and 2008 steelers defense.

  22. questforthesixthnotthelast2013 says: Jan 30, 2013 1:40 AM

Whoever thumbed up my comment about flacco to pittsburgh is the genius among you. Itsa small percentage but thats the smart choice, dreamin but in a perfect world, it gets done. Ben is probably the most immobile QB this side of jamarcuss russell! Without an immovvable line they wont go far!!

  23. straightrazor69 says: Jan 30, 2013 3:58 AM

I know im not the first to comment on it, but Keisel has one of the greatest beards in world history! IMO his analysis of Flacco is correct, and though he’s not qualified to give Flacco advice on how to improve his quarterbacking skills he could certainly help guide Joe’s facial hair choices. Also, he could teach Andrew Luck how to properly cultivate a Keisel mega beard instead of that sloppy looking neck beard he has.

  24. sjoyner59 says: Jan 30, 2013 4:57 AM

I guess at this point in his career he is a notch below those other quarterbacks ,I would be thrilled to see him running my favorite team…if I could choose it would be one of the 2 guys starting this Sunday

  25. Max says: Jan 30, 2013 5:53 AM

That’s it Kiesel help your division rival sign their QB cheaper. Your so smart up there in the Pitts

  26. boyshole25 says: Jan 30, 2013 6:08 AM

Lose as in to lose a game. Loose as in the opposite of tight.

  27. braven4evr says: Jan 30, 2013 6:47 AM

He has a point, but that doesn’t say much about the Stleelers because Flacco has beaten them quite often lately!

  28. stlsteelerfan says: Jan 30, 2013 6:55 AM

I love the Ravens fans’ comments ridiculing the Steelers for not making the playoffs. Brett Keisel currently has more rings than the entire Ravens roster combined (2 to 1).

And the person who suggested a Flacco for A. Smith trade—if you were a true Steeler fan you would know that Smith retired a year ago.

  29. brentfarve says: Jan 30, 2013 7:05 AM

Refreshing to hear a Steeler same something true about a division rival and do it respectfully even after finishing 8-8.
Hopefully all of us trash talking Raven fans can put aside our hatred towards the steelers and appreciate his comments instead of spewing out more stupid comments about the Steelers.

  30. Nofoolnodrool says: Jan 30, 2013 7:23 AM

His understated comment is very respectful but effusive ; which I would expect from someone not a stranger playing in the big game…..Keisel is a very laid back country dude don’t sell his brains short

  31. eleventyeight says: Jan 30, 2013 7:24 AM

As a die-hard Steelers fan i think Flacco is becoming a very good QB. He was a little namby-pamby i-want-my-mommy in his first couple years, but like our Ben he walked onto a very good football team. At first i thought he blow away in the wind when i saw some holiday pic of a millionaire NFL QB wearing his jammies and w/o a girlfriend on Christmas morning. At that moment i wasn’t sure he could buck up to some hard-case WR who was blowing his routes. At that point Flacco looked like he’d throw down his helmet and run off crying out loud for mommy.

But yeah- i think he’s a lot better now.

I’d cheer the Ravens on if i didn’t knew it’d make throw up in my mouth.

    How ’bout this:

Hey- Get out there and try real hard not to lose, you purple-gowned flying rats.

    Really, from the heart :-)

  32. eleventyeight says: Jan 30, 2013 7:26 AM

All joking aside, if Flacco ever develops a dark side or mean streak he could be one helluva QB.

  33. ravenmuscle says: Jan 30, 2013 7:53 AM

Keisel didn’t say what he thinks of his own quarterback that raped two young women…Ben CERTAINLY isn’t eleite.

  34. reed20fence says: Jan 30, 2013 8:08 AM

”You guys have had to watch us do it WAY more than we have had to watch you guys do it.”

Umm, the Ravens have only existed to compete for that trophy with the team you cheer for since 96. Since then the Steelers have 2 Lomabrdis and the Ravens 1. How is that WAY more?

  35. christine5014 says: Jan 30, 2013 8:20 AM

Everyone has their opinion about how good they think Flacco is. He was asked his opinion and he spoke it.he basically said Flacco is 1 tier below Manning Brady and Brees but that he is starting to play his best ball now. The insinuation is that he is on the cusp of becoming elite. Not sure where anyone thinks this is an insult. and anyone who thinks we should trade Flacco is an idiot. Very good bordering on elite quarterbacks do not grow on trees and he’s about to move into the elite conversation. Only 1 team can win the Superbowl each year they have a 50/50 chance of winning it this year. That’s outstanding and I’d take that any day.

  36. fwippel says: Jan 30, 2013 8:21 AM

As for the phrase “right now”, well Brett, look at it this way. If Flacco leads the Ravens to the Super Bowl, he’ll have won more SB rings in the last four years than Brady and Peyton Manning combined.

So, for right now (if the Ravens win on Sunday) Flacco is not only “as good”, but better than those two, if that’s how you’re going to rate them. Heck, Flacco beat these guys in the playoffs, and Brady again in the regular season.

  37. ridgeavenuehr says: Jan 30, 2013 8:27 AM

He is clearly right-not in the category of the three quarterbacks mentioned. However, he is in the category of some not mentioned, such as Big Ben Rothlisberger or Tim Tebow. Just kidding on that last name!

  38. ravenator says: Jan 30, 2013 8:36 AM

Have you ever seen a fanbase so consumed with living in the past? How many steeler fans are pouting and crying on this thread? It’s really pathetic. The bitterness and jealousy are overflowing on all of your posts Pittsburgh, and I for one am loving it! Keep it up. Cheers!

  39. pizzon says: Jan 30, 2013 8:53 AM

until Flacco wins a title he aint there yet but trying to explain that to a ravens fan is a waste of time because they think getting to the playoffs is all that is required. he needs to be more consistent and do better than complete only 59% of his passes during the regular season to be considered elite. unfortunately this sunday he will get Kapernicked!

Ah yes I have, just read any thread about pats raven game and the whining from the raven fans dominate the content. Everyone knows win or lose the raven fans know how to cry. Just wait till Sunday win or lose Kleenex stock will rise because of the raven fans

  41. ravenmuscle says: Jan 30, 2013 9:19 AM

Now we’re getting Kapernicked….funny we just finished Manningying and Bradying two of the biggest frauds in the NFL…that’s the Broncos and the Pestriots.

Brady is the biggest over rated phony in the entire NFL.

  42. dirtybirds24 says: Jan 30, 2013 9:39 AM

Yea and Keisel isnt part of the best D-ends in the league..

  43. fhockey89 says: Jan 30, 2013 9:42 AM

Joe Flacco didn’t have a touchdown pass against the Steelers when playing Leftwhich, and couldn’t beat 3rd stringer Charlie Batch this season. In the past 7 years the Steelers have gone to the Superbowl 3 times and won 2 out of 3. The Ravens have yet to beat the Steelers in the playoffs. Joe Flacco isn’t elite. He’s a Matt Schaub: good enough to get the job done. Forget Manning, Brady, Rodgers, and Brees because they’re already elite. try watching Eli Mannng and Big Ben, and then compare Flacco to them…there’s no comparison. It also helps Flacco that he gets some of the best pass protection in the league. Big Ben certainly does not, and can still get the job and make plays out of it most of the time. Try watching Flacco try and “pass” on the Steelers defense….he really never can and usually gets sacked or picked off.

You can’t tell me Joe Flacco “got this team to the superbowl”. I’m gonna go with Ray Lewis, Ray Rice, and Torrey Smith being a HUGE part of that. Not saying Flacco isn’t good because he is in his own way. But he’s not elite and certainly not as good as Manning, Brees, Brady, or Rodgers or better than Big Ben and Eli Manning. Ravens Fans: just like Eagles and Jets fans, the most delusional and lost fanbase. Enjoy the superbowl though! Because it’s obviously fun when you’re team is in it and wins. Us Steelers fans know a lot about that.

  44. Nofoolnodrool says: Jan 30, 2013 10:01 AM

  46. blackngold4life says: Jan 30, 2013 11:38 AM

LOL SteelerFam jealous of the Ravens?? For what? I gota bunch of AFC champion T-shirts in my closet! Nobody wares those! Trust me.. y’all don’t have nothin we want.. (except Torrey Smith) that kids the real deal. Where was all this Flacco hype the last 5 weekes of the season? It was just the opposite. Same ppl who sayin he’s so great now..are the same ppl sayin the Ratbirds may not pay him at all at the end of the year. Lol at the Media Bandwagon.

  47. rockthered1286 says: Jan 30, 2013 12:32 PM

“It also helps Flacco that he gets some of the best pass protection in the league.”…now you’re just smoking crack because Joe has had terrible protection this year until the playoffs.

“You can’t tell me Joe Flacco “got this team to the superbowl”. I’m gonna go with Ray Lewis, Ray Rice, and Torrey Smith being a HUGE part of that.”…beg to differ. Ray has had his worst career numbers this year, Torrey is down from last year, and Ray Lewis missed 10 games until the playoffs. Pierce has more rushing yards that Rice in the post season. So there’s that.

“Ravens Fans: just like Eagles and Jets fans, the most delusional and lost fanbase.”…wrong again. The only team in the NFL that has made the playoffs 5 years in a row. The only QB to win at least 1 playoff game each of his 1st 5 years. We are a consistent, solid, great team. If you want dellusional and lost? Try a team that has been finishing 2nd behind Baltimore the past 2 years, got Tebowed last year and missed the playoffs this year, yet talk about their 6 Lombardi’s like it has an effect on todays team whatsoever.

“Try a team that has been finishing 2nd behind Baltimore the past 2 years, got Tebowed last year and missed the playoffs this year, yet talk about their 6 Lombardi’s like it has an effect on todays team whatsoever.”

1.) We have 6, you have 1. Most in the NFL and very few teams are one behind the Steelers.
2.) Who’s defense has been #1 for how many years? Oh yes the Steelers, not the Ravens.
3.) What’s the point of “making playoffs” if you can’t get to a superbowl in most of those years. Big Ben and the Steelers could.
4.). Got Tebowed because of how many injuries? Get real kid.
5.) “The only QB to win at least 1 playoff game each of his 1st 5 years. We are a consistent, solid, great team.”- You sound like an Eagles fan saying “Mike Vick has the most wins as a QB. How many rings did that get him? Does that get you into the hall of fame? I don’t think so.
6.) Before Big Ben’s injury this year, he was up for being a potential MVP candidate.

Keep them coming Ravens fans. Your franchise will never match Pittsburgh’s. Like I said, enjoy a game that you haven’t seen in YEARS.

  49. fhockey89 says: Jan 30, 2013 2:19 PM

Cutler, Romo, Schaub and Stafford are not in the same league as Roethlisberger or Eli. When was the last time any of those 4 actually led their teams to victory? Eli Manning was money all throughout last year in the 4th quarter.

Roethlisberger is only behind Brady and Peyton in terms of engineering comeback wins (for active players of course).

  54. Steeler's Will-enator says: Jan 30, 2013 3:29 PM

I’ll bet dollars to donuts (what does that even mean?) that Brady and Manning would gladly trade their “ELITE” titles to be in Flacco’s shoes Sunday night.

  55. bobzilla1001 says: Feb 1, 2013 10:39 AM

    johntonioholmes:
Roethlisberger has “comeback wins” only because he and his offenses spend more than three quarters doing little to nothing. Brady, Brees, Rodgers and Manning’s comebacks are from bailing out their respective teams’ putrid defenses.
Let’s try to keep things in proper prospective.
