Comments on: Steelers hire new offensive line coach

I’ve always thought of our fans as well-informed. You can’t tell it by this thread. Either several people posting here as Steelers fans aren’t … or the well-informed Steelers fans are taking the week off.

After we finally ditched Larry Zierlein, the o-line coach who was more focused on surfing porn than elevating the technique of our offensive linemen, we brought in Sean Kugler. He’d managed to turn the o-line into the only bright spot on the Bills offense by focusing on teaching technique to players who weren’t necessarily Pro Bowl caliber. The job of a coach is to get players to perform above their ability. Kugler did that in Buffalo and in Pittsburgh by keeping our line functioning despite rampant injuries. He didn’t get an NCAA head-coaching job because he sucked as an NFL position coach.

Now we’ve brought in a coach who has a history with our OC, who coached a Super Bowl-caliber o-line, and who has a history as an NCAA head coach. The guy knows what he’s doing. If we say good-bye to Colon and Foster … why would that be a problem? Just how productive do you think those two have been the last three years?

And it’s goofy to ask why we’re hiring a coach when we should be drafting talent. We need the coach now. The draft is in April. We focused our last draft on the o-line and made two excellent picks. Injuries happen. Whining about them doesn’t help. The only All Pro on our team this year was a Colbert offensive-line draft pick.

Hire a coach? How about drafting / signing decent players instead of that makeshift quilt blanket Steelers call an offensive line. An entire offseason to reflect of that 8-8 record while their rivals hoist the Lombardi. Priceless.

It wont bother me to see the niners hoist the trophy or that there will be a shortage of Kleenex in Baltimore for a couple of weeks.

Good hire as the chiefs could run the ball last year.

32 out of 32 teams would have drafted Decastro before Osemele. Don’t forget Osemele had some poor showings while lined up at OT and only shined as a G which hurt his stock a tiny bit. In fact Osemele had poor feet and balance and used to fall down on his face on a regular basis in college. Decastro had very few holes in his game when he came out and was universally considered the better prospect. Give Decastro some more playing time before panning him.

Now Mike Adams, that’s another story.

I would be really excited if he could find 5 NFL-quality linemen and bring them with him. The 2012 Steelers’ o-line would have had problems with most college defensive lines, and probably a few high school d-lines as well. They would have needed extra ambulances at the game if they had played Alabama.

I don’t know the history involved, but I am surprised that the Steelers didn’t look into bringing Russ Grimm back to coach the offensive line. He’s still out of work, and is one of those guys that only seems to want to coach the O-line. In Pittsburgh, he was a darned good one, too.

This is a great hire for the Steelers. Wish him the best! However, if you want to take Pioli, you’re certainly welcomed to him as well, lol. I just don’t recommend Crennel as a HC, certainly as a DC though. Now if you want to take it a step further, Herm Edwards is great at talent evaluation for drafts, but a lousy coach.

We are gunna be the bottom feeders. I like how we have not one go to guy as reciever. No one big. I like how we draft slow fat backs that fumble. I also like how everyone on our team is always hurt. Gotta suck sometimes and not be spoiled with winning always. Makes you appeciate your team moe.

Great hire. Can’t wait to see what this line can do healthy with some time playing together.
It’s great to see all the haters come out for an oline story. Keep hating, it reassures me that Ravens fans are still sour about a couple recent playoff losses.
ravenator, randallflagg, etc. Just remember, nobody wastes thier time posting dumb comments about teams that don’t win.

The jealousy of fans of other teams really manifests itself when you see the majority of comments on a story about the hiring of an offensive line coach are from fans of other teams basicaly saying “Steelers suck!”. It is quite amusing to be honest.

That is ridiculous. DeCastro was injured in the preseason and couldn’t play until late in the year (and when he did play, he played well for a rook). Mike Adams they drafted as a project, and his contract terms reflect that. The sample size for both is less than a full season, hard to evaluate a successful draft with 1 season. Final draft grades are usually issued 3 to 5 years after the fact.

ie, look at the Raven 2004 draft. Not one player panned out. And in 05, only Dan Cody rings a bell.

So with that…you can look at any team or any draft and say this stunk or that was a great draft, et cetera.

So relieved when I heard this. Great hire. Put three linemen in the Pro Bowl when he worked on the Giants’ Super Bowl team, and worked with Haley in KC. Hated to lose Kugler, but they’ve chosen a smart replacement.

Don’t forget, cool guy, that the Steelers and their “quilt blanket” offensive line beat you with Charlie Batch and nearly did the same with Leftwich. Fine line between 8-8 and the Super Bowl.
