Ray Lewis: PED accusation is “the trick of the devil”

Ray Lewis AP

Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis has been quick to credit God for the successes in his NFL career. Now that an allegation of performance-enhancing drug use is arising just as his NFL career is coming to an end, Lewis is blaming the devil.

“That’s the trick of the devil,” Lewis said when asked about allegations that he used a banned performance-enhancing substance during his recovery from a torn triceps. “The trick of the devil is to kill, steal and destroy. That’s what he comes to do. He comes to distract you from everything you’re trying to do.”

Lewis said that when the devil is trying to tear you down, all you can do is trust God to build you up. Lewis said that’s what his mother taught him from a young age and what he has tried to practice in his life, and to have an impact on others through his Christian faith.

“My mom taught me to put my complete faith in God,” Lewis said. “I truly believe impact and success are two different things. Anybody can have success. Impact is totally different. You talk about the walk of Jesus, his whole walk was impact. So that’s what my life is based on.”

ray needs to start answering some questions instead of hiding behind god all the time.

Keep backing him up into a corner with all these accusations. The last time that happened he won a Super Bowl MVP.

  6. bennyb82 says: Jan 30, 2013 1:20 PM

So what he is really saying is yes he used a banned substance and he will pray for protection from God for using it? Honestly, this is getting too much coverage…but Ray probably does not want to answer the other questions that reporters have…hmm

Stop making your life out to be a tale from the Bible. This wasnt the devil’s work, and you are no messiah.

  12. thevoiceofreason1 says: Jan 30, 2013 1:22 PM

No…more…irrelevant Ray Lewis coverage. There’s a million other storylines to cover between Ed Reed’s trip home to his first SB, Kapernick’s emergence, etc.

I think we’ve covered all our bases on this still extremely sketchy PED accusation.

Geez, Ray, you’re about to play in your last game. Show a little dignity. This has nothing to do with your alleged Jesus or the alleged Devil, it’s about whether you used some alleged performance-enhancing drug.

Personally, I don’t care whether you used or not. It’s your last game, it’s the Super Bowl, and even if you were a user, it’s a little late for league discipline (not to mention what it would do to the betting line and the possible effect on all those billions already wagered, NOT that this matters to the league office, oh no, of course not).

But casting this in theological terms? Way over the top, and irrelevant.

  22. blacknole08 says: Jan 30, 2013 1:28 PM

He has a point and I question SI’s timing of reporting his alleged PED usage. It’s hard to believe seeing as how Lewis has never failed a drug test in his professional career.

The media in general can purport and frame things in a way that would make someone who could be innocent look guilty. Essentially they can be good or evil.

  23. thevoiceofreason1 says: Jan 30, 2013 1:28 PM

@abp3377 He already did respond to this, yesterday. He’s not forcing the media to keep asking him the same questions.

  28. gunn3r11 says: Jan 30, 2013 1:31 PM

Is it odd or maybe at least curious that whenever Ray Lewis, convicted of obstruction of justice in a murder case, preaches about God “…the walk of Jesus…”, the fans and media just laugh (SNL) and chalk it up to Ray being Ray.

But when that white boy from Florida quietly kneels and prays alone, it irritates half the country. I guess only black people can thank God and mention Jesus. Just sayin’ Brahhhhhh

I liked Ray for awhile when I forgot about the murders that he had some part in (at least the coverup). I guess I’m not used to hearing him in front of the camera so much, but he’s very tough to understand when you ask him a question and he answers it with bible verses. No problem with his love of God and I hope he lives his life as holy as it appears now.

I can already picture it next year at ESPN “lets go to our future hall of famer Ray Lewis for some in depth analysis of the big game last night” “Well God wanted this guy to score, and god is good”

Ray needs to stop with this preaching. I have no problem with people that have faith in the Lord. Where my issue comes in is with people who try to push their beliefs and values onto other people. Ray needs to talk about football and that’s it. If he wants to be a preacher, build a church and preach. I was rooting hard for this team (as a Steeler fan) over the last couple of weeks. Now I’m starting to think I want the 9’ers to win. It’s over the top.

… ” Lewis has never failed a drug test” …

Ha. Ha. Good one. First, the drug in question can only be detected with a blood sample. The NFL does not have blood sample testing. In other words, he’s never failed a drug test that’s never been given.

Secondly, isn’t this exactly what what Lance Armstrong said over and over and over?

  43. surfinbird1 says: Jan 30, 2013 1:37 PM

All of these distractions wont matter, the Ravens will win the Superbowl. Then all of us garbage spewing Raven fans will be able to crow all next season about how great our team is and how bad all those 8-8 teams were and how the Elite QBs choked against us in the playoffs.

This will make our dilusional lives seem a little better unless the Ravens lose….then we will all look like stupid garbage spewing Raven fans and will be in the same leauge as the other 31 teams that didnt win the superbowl this year.

Lets get the 49er whooping started!

  50. grantgoodman93 says: Jan 30, 2013 1:42 PM

  51. stack7 says: Jan 30, 2013 1:44 PM

wow. How bout citing the 10 commandments. Thou shall not kill. Thou shall not lie. I am so tired of the media giving this guy a free pass for being an accessory to murder, a prima donna, and hiding behind his “faith.”

If he has done nothing wrong, then he’d be fine with addressing these uncomfortable questions directly and not trying to defame those asking fair questions. I’ve never trusted the guy and think he’s an ok linebacker. So what? What kind of man is he? What kind of leader is he? Take some lessons from Ed Reed, Ray Ray. He disgusts me and I hope his legacy is tarnished by the man he is which is a disgusting megalomaniac and a poor example of leadership.

I understand that he has probably answered this question 100 times, but the “it’s a trick of the devil” rant…? … Just give a “no comment” bro. You come off as disingenuous with that rant. Everything he said was true (IMO) but you CANNOT use it as a defense. The Devil can throw obstacles in your path, but he CANNOT make you stumble…at least according to the Christian faith.

  64. mrniceguy3333 says: Jan 30, 2013 2:07 PM

For one, you should be able to tell by the relative lunacy of my comments that I am mocking the spygate crowd who say the most ridiculous things.

Two, Ray’s triumphant return affected the entire team, not just his own play. So if he took a ban substance for that to even happen when it otherwise wouldn’t have playing by the rules, his cheating played a role in the Ravens being where they are.

Funny when Rodney Harrison took HGH just to ‘help heal himself” he was certainly viewed as a cheater for doing so.

Its a bad thing for Lewis, Harrison and any other player that uses a banned substance to heal, that’s why. It helps them heal faster than they normally would and faster than people playing by the rules and not using banned substances to heal.

Amen. Fuel for the fire baby. Can’t wait for Sunday. The Lord’s day, in case the faithless folk forgot. I pray for you all. Seriously.

Ray Lewis is the Barack Obama of the NFL. Never answer a question and blame it on someone else. If Pete Rose can’t get in the MLB Hall of Fame for gambling, why should this clown get a pass for admittingly breaking the law related to two deaths. What a hypocrite, I don’t wish him any harm, just not a SB victory. Please stop talking about him. I threw my SI away today when it arrived and saw him the cover. Let’s talk about Michael Oher a little more and Ray Lewis a lot less.

Anyone remember King David from the Bible? The women, the kids, the murder, the worshipper who embarrassed his wife as she watched him in the process, a man after God’s heart? That’s Ray Lewis.

Simple explanantion for all this Ray. You accidentally switched roll-ons with Vijay Singh at the Pro am last year, He got your Old Spice and …………no.
Hey they put that deer stuff in Jock itch spray too ?? Better than Viagra , eh ?

Christians are taught to preach whenever they do something wrong. The person asking the question will get frustrated and move onto another topic. I hope he retires and we don’t have to listen to his big yap.

I bet the devil knows where a certain white suit is. King David genocided entire populations btw.

Ray also said he doesn’t take drugs or never failed a drug test.

No disrepect to Ray’s religious comments/views, but Lance Armstrong never failed a drug test either.

    Neither did Marion Jones.

I don’t doubt his training and work ethic, but drug tests don’t work. I wouldn’t be surprised if they ALL take performance enhancing drugs…
