Deer antler spray seller tries to extend his 15 minutes of fame

Super Bowl Gospel 2013 Show Getty Images

As I walked out of the Super Bowl Media Center on Friday, I cam across a mass of reporters on the sidewalk, all surrounding someone who seemed to be speaking intently. It took me a moment to figure out that it was Mitch Ross, maker of the deer antler spray that suddenly became the source of controversy this week when Sports Illustrated reported that Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis used it — and that it contains a banned substance.

I couldn’t get close enough to hear what Ross was saying at his impromptu press conference, and anyway he struck me as the kind of guy I should stay far away from, but Ross has certainly managed to draw a lot of attention to himself and his product. On Friday night and Saturday morning, dozens of media outlets reported on Ross’s claim. And for a huckster like Ross, there’s no such thing as bad publicity.

Most of the media outlets that have covered Ross have scoffed at his claims. The one that has been most repeated is when he told reporters, “Now I’m going to blow your mind, you have two brains.” And at least one NFL player, Giants punter Steve Weatherford, has angrily denied Ross’s claims that he’s a client.

But Ross is also getting some good publicity, including from former NFL fullback and current NFL Network analyst Heath Evans, who told WEEI he uses deer antler spray and it has helped him mentally, to focus and concentrate.

If that kind of publicity helps Ross sell his product, then this has been a successful Super Bowl week for him. Even if his 15 minutes of fame are almost up.

It doesn’t matter if Ray did it. He’ll get away with it again anyway. Burn the suit Ray! Burn the suit!

I love how people in Baltimore completely forget about Ray being a murderer because he’s a good football player. These same folks with tell you that Josh Brent is a horrible person. At least in Philly their felon did his time.

It’s all fun and games until they find Ray Lewis chowing down on a salt-lick in the woods.

  9. mj1818 says: Feb 2, 2013 8:10 AM

I was skeptical about Ray Lewis, but after reading that article I 100% believe Ray. This Ross guy is just a whacko trying to make a dollar he has no credibility.

Huckster he may be, but why hate on him? He only sells the stuff. Ray is the one who used it.

I don’t see anyone attacking the guy who sold Jay Ratliff his beer

Ray is the true huckster here.

  14. howiefeltersnatch says: Feb 2, 2013 8:17 AM

Why are you hating on the deer spray guy? This is America. If there is a window of opportunity, jump through it. He will likely never get this kind of publicity again for the rest of his life. Can’t blame him for taking advantage of it.

I do. Maybe it’s cuz I’m a ”fan boy.” This week I’ve come across people who full well know the facts of accusations against the players on their own teams, and will argue their guys’ innocence when rival fans accuse them (blindly citing only a sensational headline somewhere). But those same fans will happily libel Ray as a murderer, even though no one involved in any official capacity with that whole episode says he stabbed anyone. Not a shred of evidence exists to suggest he did. And even if they found his suit, it would only prove that it has blood on it, not that he stabbed anyone.

As for this spray non-sense. Everyone who loves Ray thinks this accuser is a liar and a cheat. And everyone who hates Ray is convinced (no proof or evidence needed) that he doped. The media just throws stories out there every other day to please both sides and get their hits.

  16. hlna55 says: Feb 2, 2013 8:31 AM

It doesn’t matter how many layers of pads and fake religious quotes he tries to throw over himself, his lying, deceitful and disgusting personality always comes through.

When Ray Lewis starts darting in front of cars everyone will know

  18. zn0rseman says: Feb 2, 2013 8:33 AM

Not sure why this Ross guy is getting all kinds of hate and disdain from media personalities while Ray Lewis (a man who we all know should be behind bars and who we all know at least took part in the double murder of two young men) is being embraced and spun into some kind of twisted redemption hero story.

It’s kind of sad really. Our nation used to be one that would collectively shun a guy like Ray Lewis…

The Ravens will win the Superbowl…that’s all that matters…and all the Steeler fans can just cry in their beer and come to the realization that the Ravens will beat them AGAIN next year and that the Steeler defense is OLD OLD and OLD and their general manager has admitted they have NO running backs.

  22. helloanybodyhome says: Feb 2, 2013 8:40 AM

Ray destroyed evidence that may have solved a murder, he was present during the murder, he lied to the cops about what happened, and still hasn’t said what went on in the limo.
What, in the history of St Ray, is there to make anyone think he is not lying about this?

  23. dirtybirdkert says: Feb 2, 2013 8:42 AM

If Heath Evans uses this for mental and cognitive performance, its definitely working. His mental capacity has increased twofold from that of a rock to that of a deer antler in his post NFL career.

A jury ruled that the people with Ray that night acted in self defense. So anyone who flat out says murderer is just ignoring the facts.

The media, and this site, are also ignoring the fact that the worlds 2 most leading authorities on deer spray came out and said that the way Ray was claimed to have used the product, in spray form, cannot be used for what everyone is claiming.

Surprise surprise the media is using sensational headlines to promote their product. Anyone who believes it without checking facts is sheep and a moron.

I’ve been working out for more than a few decades and crap like this comes along with a different name every so often. Remove the label and it’s snake oil being sold out of a wagon drawn by a sickly old horse.

  47. patriotinvasion says: Feb 2, 2013 10:01 AM

Funny how Matt Walsh was considered an honest messiah for all the Pats haters yet Ross is dismissed as a nut. The fact is that Ray Lewis and the Ravens CHEATED by using a banned substance PED to get back and rally the Ravens to the Super Bowl.

If the Ravens win tomorrow, it will forever be tainted with an asterisk*

  50. hitdog042 says: Feb 2, 2013 10:16 AM

Get educated. Deer spray does work. And it doesn’t contain a banned substance. Deer spray when ingested naturally makes igf1 in the liver. That’s why it’s banned. It is not igf-1 out of the bottle. Second it absolutely reduces inflammation and helps recovery. It’s not hgh and its not a steroid. It doesn’t make you big or fast. It helps you work out longer and helps muscles recover quickly. It also helps heal injury faster. To those of you who have never tried it stop saying it is worthless. It’s been used by Chinese doctors for 100s of years.

  51. Nofoolnodrool says: Feb 2, 2013 10:22 AM

  53. scoobies05 says: Feb 2, 2013 10:32 AM

the comparison is to show how ignorant people are to the facts nofool. the only people charged with murder in the ray lewis case were acquited and were said to have acted in self defense. and neither one ever implicated ray. and no charges were ever filed against ben. i am sure you will have something clever to say. but dont let the facts get in your way

  54. bkh405 says: Feb 2, 2013 10:41 AM

Maybe I missed it, but has he made this “video” of Ray placing an order available for the public? Or are we all still just going on the word of SI and a guy out to blackmail an NFL player?

  55. rtant2013 says: Feb 2, 2013 10:44 AM

    @my1818

He has no credibility? Other then the fact he recorded a conversation with Ray asking how to use it and asking him to send all the products he has. I call that pretty credible that Ray was using this stuff. And the only excuse the Ravens and Ray has is he never failed a drug test, well of course you didn’t Ray, they don’t test your blood, which is the only way to test for this PED. He may be seeking his 15 mins of fame, but he’s telling the truth, Ray used his products. But really doesn’t matter, not like Ray can be suspended or something.

  56. Nofoolnodrool says: Feb 2, 2013 10:49 AM

So let me get this straight: was there a white suit or not? Is Santa now real? The tooth fairy? Free OJ? Just not that gullible for the sake of a team.. I don’t worship Ben and am ashamed of his possible actions..

  57. balzer41 says: Feb 2, 2013 10:55 AM

I love how the media is trying to demonize this guy for selling his products. He’s a legitimate business man that has a lot of high profile customers. He didn’t break any arms getting those customers to buy his products. Ray is at fault here and the media is just tying to give him a pass by shifting blame to somebody else.

  58. SilentMajority says: Feb 2, 2013 11:07 AM

  72. letemplay says: Feb 2, 2013 12:50 PM

Okay here it goes. I’m a huge Ravens homer and I’m going to lay it out there exactly how I feel it happened.

First, this guy in the article is a moron. He is looking for cash and it’s working so maybe he isn’t a moron, but he’s certainly not credible. He says things like “God sent me to help” “You have two brains” and “Brett Favre ordered a full body hologram” The people who are believing him here just want a reason to keep piling it on Ray. I don’t think Ray took this stuff that he is selling, but here’s the kicker. I actually think Ray took just straight up HGH and I don’t think he’s the only one taking it.

Let’s see, it’s “banned” but there is no test for it yet. It’s very helpful in recovering from injury and if you use it correctly, it’s actually very safe for grown men to use. I would bet green money that there is a very large number of NFL players that use the stuff to get healthy faster. Personally, I don’t see anything wrong with it but that’s a whole other can of worms. They will test for it soon and people will stop taking it.

So there ya go. I don’t think Ray is a saint. I think he’s a hell of a football player who has been amazing doing work in my community. I will not, however, go along with the sensationalist BS that has been coming up lately to try to display the man in the light that the media would like.

Think for yourself. Don’t be a lemming and believe all the garbage that people try to pass off a journalism these days.

  73. scoobies05 says: Feb 2, 2013 1:01 PM

actually you couldnt be more wrong. i think the fact that people make judgements over whether or not you root for their team is insane. i cant stand the steelers but i dont judge their players or their actions based on that. its a sports rivalry. none of us were in atlanta with ray or the bathroom with ben. so who knows what truly happened. if you want to ignore innocent until proven guilty then go right ahead

  74. letemplay says: Feb 2, 2013 1:13 PM

    —————————————————–

This article has nothing to do with the Atlanta incident. The people that keep bringing it up are just showing their biased agenda. They pretty much know now that this “deer spray” story has been completely destroyed by this guys interview. It’s just the next thing they have to fall back on to try to paint Ray in a bad light.

Doing it in an article that has nothing to do with that subject just makes them look silly.

  75. scoobies05 says: Feb 2, 2013 1:26 PM

  76. CKL says: Feb 2, 2013 1:27 PM

I DESPISE Ray Lewis (though I don’t think he’s a murderer) but this Ross dude is a loonytunes. And even he said he never saw Ray take the stuff. We;ll probably never know the truth.

That said it does disturb me that there’s a starcaps etc type loophole with these appeals that essentially lets guys who are close to the end of their career draw this stuff out forever with no consequences. Although as Kuselias says his dad told him (paraphrase), if you have no solution you can’t complain. So I guess I shouldn’t complain because I really can’t think of anything viable and/or fair to both sides that they can do to prevent it.

Oh wait, no one will take that and run with it unless I replace “Peyton Manning” with “Ray Lewis”. Anyone will become incredibly gullible or stupid when they hear what they want to hear. Then they take it and run with it.

As for this spray non-sense. Everyone who loves Ray thinks this accuser is a liar and a cheat. And everyone who hates Ray is convinced (no proof or evidence needed) that he doped. The media just throws stories out there every other day to please both sides and get their hits.

You do realize that Rayray had a pregnant fiance at home, and brought a date to the double murder don’t you? Maybe he didn’t shiv the guys, but we’re not talking about a Saint here. But Ravens fans and Rayray seem to think he is a Saint.

I believe Ray, but it is odd that Ray’s pre-game pep talk has changed to:

“Now Pollard, Now Pitta, Now Flacco, Now Dickson! On Bolden, On Torrey, On Ngata, On Brendon!

“Ben has nothing to do with Ray or the white suit so why the comparison . One copped a plea one didn’t”

    You’re correct! Ben copped a feel, not a plea…

My pillow pet says we have six how many do you have….rings not antlers……

May the farce be with you…

Scoobie you dodge the obvious question…the suit where is it? Why was it ditched? And your inference to my being either jealous or ignorant I find it to be the funniest non antler/deer joke on this thread.
Good luck tomorrow and may the farce be your guide.

i dont know where the suit is nofool. no one does. its missing. who knows if it matters. no one. this case went through the legal system and was resolved 12 years ago. i know how much the past means to you. you bring up your steelers history all the time. i guarantee most ray haters would love to have him on their team. if it means so much to you why dont you and all of your raven hating friends go look for it tomorrow while the ravens play in the super bowl.

I don’t hate the Ravens and would not want the farce to play middle linebacker for any team I rooted for. I actually hope they win so Baltimores inferiority complex dissipates and the farce retires so the good raven fans don’t have to spend so much energy defending the phony.
Even tho I find the farce to be a joke the devotion to him shows the disparate state we are in for legitimate heroes in this country…sigh

History for the young is very short , but for the old it’s longer with lessons both good and bad. To ignore your mistakes is to repeat them which is stupid; therefore if it walks like a deer, looks like a deer, and has antlers like a deer it’s probably a deer. Fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me…the farce is a deer….sorry

I never turn down the source of learning because of age race or gender… The day you close your mind is the day you are mentally stale/dead…

You don’t have to agree with my reasoning but to say I am ignorant or jealous for thinking that way is petty and disrespectful … Too much of that is exchanged on this site and you my friend are so much better than that..
