bkostela says:
sorry, but people saw him play more than you think. the texans played the jets on monday night, packers and bears on sunday night, and lions on thanksgiving. and if they didn’t notice him playing, that would probably indicate that he wasn’t having much of an impact in those games.

In the 4 games you mentioned Watt had 19 tackles, 6 sacks, 6 tackles for losses and 5 passes defended. Sounds like maybe you weren't paying attention.

Yes Watt is a 3-4 defensive end, HOWEVER, the 3-4 defense he plays in is a one gap defense that ends up playing much more like a 4-3, meaning defensive ends are allowed get up field and be disruptive (as Watt does very well) which is a far cry from the standard 3-4 defense that people think of where d-lineman are asked to defend 2 gaps and its more important that they eat up blocks and allow the linebackers behind them the freedom to make plays.

Sadly "analysts" like Peter King have no idea that there's a difference so he keeps going on and on about Watt being a 3-4 end without mentioning that there's a huge difference in defenses.

Watt is absolutely incredible. Unfortunately not many people saw him play, other than the two games against NE. He wreaks havoc on every other play even when he’s double teamed. He makes offensive linemen look clueless. He is the best DL I’ve seen since Reggie, and the best interior DL since Sapp. Freak athlete, reads the offense and reacts well against run and pass, relentless motor, if he’s not pressuring the QB he’s usually batting away a pass, and running near him is an excellent way to lose 2 yards.

People disagreeing are so illogical it's hilarious. JJ Watt almost break the single season sack record as a 3-4 defensive end, had more bat downs in a season than Reggie white ever did and also ha more tackles for loss than Von miller and Aldon smith. People are straight delusional if they think JJ was inconsistent. Miller was disappointing the last quarter of the year and basically erased himself from DPOY talk single handedly

Jrebar88, really?

He led NFL with 20.5 sacks this season (tied for the sixth-most all-time). He became one of nine players to register at least 20 sacks since sacks began to be recorded in 1982.
He batted or tipped 16 passes this season, most in the NFL
He had 24 tackles for a loss.
His sacks plus tackles for a loss cost opponents 200.5 yards.
Watt led the NFL with 36.5 dropbacks disrupted (sacks, passes defended, batted balls and interceptions). Seattle’s Richard Sherman was a distant second with 23.0.
Watt disrupted 5.7 percent of the dropbacks he faced. In the past three seasons, not other player posted a number higher than 4.3 percent (Jared Allen in 2011).

This was a no brainer. We will be looking back at 2011 as the year of the pass rusher with Watt, Miller and Aldon. We'll also be looking back on it as the year Kaepernick got drafted way too late!

Maybe the lone voter saw the best player on a defense that got better as the regular season went on with a team who won 11 straight, and compared that to the best player on a defense that got worse as the year went on with a team that struggled down the stretch?

I'm a Broncos fan and I believe JJ Watt deserved this award but I don't think it's a major crime that one person voted for someone else...unless it was that a-hole Woody Paige, he deserves any and all scorn!

Assuming that line vote was the same guy that didn't vote Calvin Johnson to the pro-bowl after breaking the single game receiving record. What was his rationale? Other teams had more wins? At least he's consistent voting a Bronco over a Texan (note the sarcasm).
