Word emerges of the 10 modern-era finalists for the Hall of Fame

The official announcement hasn’t been made, but several of the Hall of Fame voters have disclosed via Twitter the names of the modern-era finalists who progressed from the final 15 to the final 10.

Still alive after the first cut were Michael Strahan, Bill Parcells, Larry Allen, Jerome Bettis, Cris Carter, Charles Haley, Jonathan Ogden, Andre Reed, Warren Sapp, and Aeneas Williams.

Out are Art Modell, Eddie DeBartolo, Kevin Greene, Tim Brown, and Will Shields.

We wonder whether Brown will claim that Bill Callahan sabotaged Brown’s candidacy.

Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News said that the candidacy of Parcells was debated for a full hour.

Can you get a rim shot after that zinger?

  3. dumbpollack says: Feb 2, 2013 5:44 PM

Art Modell is out!! As a life long Browns fan I couldn’t be more pleased. Thanks to Tony Grossi for keeping that rat out of the hall!

  4. shawon0meter says: Feb 2, 2013 5:44 PM

if Cris Carter doesn’t get in this time the entire hall-of-fame needs to be shut down and re-started from scratch.

  5. stoolerz says: Feb 2, 2013 5:44 PM

Modell can’t and shouldn’t get in _ even dead

  6. jam11163 says: Feb 2, 2013 5:44 PM

art modell out… from an eagles fan thats a shame…

  7. ruffbufffire says: Feb 2, 2013 5:45 PM

Dre Reed 2nd best WR in his era behind Rice

  8. hatesycophants says: Feb 2, 2013 5:46 PM

Jerome Bettis is not a HoF running back. There, someone had to say it.

  9. nomoreseasontix says: Feb 2, 2013 5:46 PM

    Jerome Bettis?

  10. shieldsisland37 says: Feb 2, 2013 5:47 PM

If Parcells can not get in, then they might as well not let in anyone.

  11. goraidersgospurs says: Feb 2, 2013 5:49 PM

    F, TIM Brown haters!!!

  12. benroethlisberger7 says: Feb 2, 2013 5:50 PM

We laugh at Art Modell and the loser organization in Balti-poor. LOL

  13. kfiz14 says: Feb 2, 2013 5:52 PM

Only place Modell deserves acceptance is Hell.

  14. packerpride03 says: Feb 2, 2013 5:55 PM

Tim brown is getting screwed. If he played for any other team he would be in the hall already

  15. tombradyishotgarbage says: Feb 2, 2013 5:55 PM

My final five would be: Larry Allen, Jonathan Ogden, Chris Carter, Charles Haley, and Warren Sapp.

  16. xplicitpits says: Feb 2, 2013 5:56 PM

I thought Kevin Greene & Tim Brown had better careers then at least 3 left on this list! Robbery! Don’t have to like them but respect & watch the game, at least!

  17. eigglesnosuperbowls says: Feb 2, 2013 5:56 PM

You mean they left Chip Kelly off the list !

  18. tdk24 says: Feb 2, 2013 5:56 PM

Leaving out Brown and Modell is a travesty.
Bettis is only on there because they feel bad that it takes him like an hour and a half to get out of bed in the morning. That’s what he gets for being a 260lb RB.

  19. geefan1 says: Feb 2, 2013 5:57 PM

Glad to see the guy that nearly bankrupted his football team didn’t make it past first cut-down. You really have to be a special kind of stupid to go belly up when your only business venture grows from $25 million to more than $500 million over 30 years.

  20. tombradyishotgarbage says: Feb 2, 2013 6:00 PM

Chris Carter finally gets in yay!!!!

  21. darkneptune73 says: Feb 2, 2013 6:00 PM

The Browns fans here came out of the woodwork, I see.

  22. gdfbar says: Feb 2, 2013 6:00 PM

Will Shields is a 12 time Pro Bowl selection, and was one of the best guys at his position for a decade. The HOF voting process is a joke.

  23. mpetey123 says: Feb 2, 2013 6:05 PM

Art Modell deserves to be in. Why the hate, you got YOUR team colors, records and all back after less then five years. Art begged to stay in Cleveland your crappy city dared him to leave and he did. You people are just petty. Modell helped build the league, it is just a shame he doesn’t get what he deserves even in death.

  24. pike573 says: Feb 2, 2013 6:05 PM

    I’m a Steelers fan and Bettis isn’t a HOFer.

And my favorite stat: Parcells has a career losing record when Belichick wasn’t his DC.

  25. hatesycophants says: Feb 2, 2013 6:11 PM

Bill Parcells, Charles Haley, Warren Sapp, Michael Strahan and… Chris Carter.

  26. ravensdominate says: Feb 2, 2013 6:12 PM

Wow Art Modell screwed again. These voters are horrible, nasty people. Let’s win the big one tomorrow for ART!!!

  27. icewalker946 says: Feb 2, 2013 6:12 PM

Charles Haley and Jonathan Ogden are the two that deserve it the most.

  28. ravensdominate says: Feb 2, 2013 6:15 PM

Why would Jerome Bettis be a Hall of famed? For being fat and gaining all those 3rd and 1s??? What a joke.

  29. tres79 says: Feb 2, 2013 6:19 PM

Cris Carter career was nothing but 5 yard catches and big game chokes. Doesn’t belong.

  30. ridgeavenuehr says: Feb 2, 2013 6:26 PM

They are all hall of famers-very childish to say this or that one doesn’t belong. However, I have never been a fan of owners making it to the hall, even the great Art Rooney.

  31. ambitoos says: Feb 2, 2013 6:27 PM

It’s got to be Parcells. I just wish he was still coaching.

  32. jacunn2000 says: Feb 2, 2013 7:19 PM

Larry Allen and big Johnathan Ogden? Classy Hall of Famers?

  33. jacunn2000 says: Feb 2, 2013 7:20 PM

Parcell in my opinion, or any coach for that matter does not deserve HOF privlages.

  34. rickydo22 says: Feb 2, 2013 7:29 PM

Why was my comment pulled? It was’nt nasty or vulgar? I just stated a fact,Modell left the Name and Colors, only after he was sued to honor the last 3 years of his lease. Which he would have had to honor of buy out. Only THEN,he left the name and colors because it would have cost him tens of millions of dollars. Tim Brown was left out because of his Callahan comment,in my opinion. It was made without class,in my opinion.

  35. bigtganks says: Feb 2, 2013 7:46 PM

Who is Aeneas Williams???? (In the context of others on this list.)

  36. classyjacklambert says: Feb 2, 2013 7:56 PM

I love how everyone says Jerome Bettis isn’t a hall of famer… why? He is a one of a kind cannonball of a running back that had the 5th highest career yard total ever, and he did it with NO ONE at QB until his last 2 seasons when a young Ben Roethlisberger took him to the big show. He broke the will of defenses that knew he was coming up the middle nearly every time, and still had an amazing success rate on converting for the first down or touch down. He doesn’t have an excellent ypa statline… so what? That’s one stat. He barely ever fumbled, played through injuries, and won a super bowl before retiring. Anyone that says he doesn’t belong is either a Steelers hater or a moron.

  37. believeland1954 says: Feb 2, 2013 8:01 PM

It’s amazing that every Raven’s fan believes Art Modell was screwed by the city of Cleveland. He took the money and ran. Pure and simple. He mismanaged the franchise and Baltimore bailed him out. If it wasn’t Baltimore it would have been the next higher bidder.

  38. ibleedblackandgold1979 says: Feb 2, 2013 8:26 PM

Jerome Bettis. Sixth leading rusher of all time. I understand his ypc is low. But his durability contributes to his overall numbers and he should be recognized for it. And for all the haters, if he played for your team and racked up that many yards you’d be pulling for him to get in too.

  39. ballboy48 says: Feb 2, 2013 8:32 PM

There is no room for greedy little pigs in the HOF! Sorry Art, that includes you! Could’ve just sold the Browns and made a ton of money, instead of moving it.

  40. nokoolaidcowboy says: Feb 2, 2013 9:49 PM

I’m a Cowboys fan and even I have to admit that pic of Parcells should be as a Giant. While on the Cowboys, Jerry never really let Coach Parcells do anything HOF worthy!

  41. jbaxt says: Feb 2, 2013 10:17 PM

12 pro bowls and Shields is left out? Sorry, but that’s just wrong.

  42. westcoastraider says: Feb 2, 2013 11:32 PM

    Warren sapp?? Really??

  43. ialwayswantedtobeabanker says: Feb 3, 2013 8:30 AM

My list: Carter, Ogden, Shields, Allen and Williams, with Strahan in next if we need to bump an OL.

  44. brownoholic says: Feb 3, 2013 10:13 AM

    Modell defenders:

    A) Stop trying to convince yourselves or anyone else that his legacy isn’t 99.9% moving the Browns.

and B) You’re only defending him to troll Browns fans.
