Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Saints plan to hire Rob Ryan to be the team’s next defensive coordinator.
Ryan, who notoriously boasted he’d have a new job in “like five minutes” after being fired by the Cowboys in January, eventually was hired by the Rams. But it quickly fell through, putting him back on the market.
Ryan will bring the 3-4 defense to New Orleans, and presumably his brash Ryan DNA. It necessarily will require coach Sean Payton to be more involved in policing the defense than he was when Gregg Williams served as defensive coordinator and created a mess via an illegal pay-for-performance/bounty program.
Hopefully for the Saints’ sake, Williams and Ryan will have only one thing in common — both were defensive coordinators in St. Louis, but neither actually ever worked a single practice or game on behalf of the team.
UPDATE 9:09 p.m. ET: Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that Ryan will interview Friday, and that Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham will interview on Thursday. Which suggests that the Ryan hire isn’t quite a done deal. Just like it wasn’t in St. Louis.

People are gonna hate cuz its Ryan. But its a solid hire, he knows how to coach a 3-4.
Happy that our division rivals plan to hire Ryan.. he doesn’t have a lot to work with on that saints D, yes there offense is easily one of the best in the league, but that D was horrible last year. Rob Ryan, just like his brother, is so dramatic and brings to many headlines to his team, add that with the bounty scandal, if things dont go well for the saints next year, that team is going to be a MESS.
As a Saints fan, I hate this hire. I hope I’m wrong, but I hate it.
Don’t compare that guy to the best show on tv…
Lord help us
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Please, Coach Payton, remind this idiot every day that he is a defensive coordinator, not the rock star the Ryan boys each pretend to be.
Have him coach from the press box, so perhaps he’ll be less inclined to be the ranting, raving, LOOKATMELOOKATMELOOKATMEEEEEEEE fool that loves to see himself on TV.
And finally, tell him to ditch the long hair. He’s too old for a look that even on younger guys went out 20 years ago.
Payton and the Ryan’s are tight.
Not a surprise he ended up here.
Georgia DC, huh? Maybe that has something to do with the Saints’ interest in Jarvis Jones and Alex Ogletree…
This cannot possibly be true. The “Million Excuse Man” is exactly what the Saints DO NOT NEED.
Hire him at your own risk.
95% chance this happens
Oh boy. It was record Super Bowl viewership wait it wasn’t, Rob Ryan will be hire by (fill in the gap) wait nope, the Eagles will move quickly on Vic, or not. Over/under of 1 day until a different story is run.
Bombastic on Bourbon St.
Flatulence in the French Quarter
Dude… until he’s heading to the office to sign a contract, don’t say he’s being hired.
“The Saints have shown real interest in Rob Ryan.”
Don’t need to give the Saint’s fans a heart attack like you did to Ram’s fans multiple times.
Why?
we could’ve done better
Great news for the rest of the division and the NFC !!!!
In other news, the Saints have raised their food catering allowance $27,000.
I think these reports of Rob Ryan being hired by a team are coming from Ryan himself.
Both guys have similar personalities as Gregg Williams. They will respond well to either one.
Rob is trying to sell the new 1-6 formation that came to him when he was lying on the beach a couple weeks back.
Well, it’s more tweet than report but didn’t Schefter also “report” that the Saints were hiring Crennel and Mangini?
Schefter’s doesn’t seem to be afraid to roll the dice and “report” something in hopes of being able to claim that he broke the news.
Ryan doesn’t even interview with the Saints until Friday.
Sounds familiar.
IF he can fix that defense with that offense the NFC just got ANOTHER team that can seriously contend sucks to be in the NFC may the best man win but not to mention they have that Saints against the world mentality as a Pats fan I know how they feel its fun to have everyone hate you just makes you play better
Please don’t
Always knew these two crazy kids would get together.
5 minutes, 5 hours, 5 days, 5 weeks, 5 months, you know what he meant!
How is the fat slob a step up from Gregg Williams (as a human being)? Hire Romeo Crennel and regain some moral fortitude for your team Coach Payton.
In case anyone was wondering how this franchise could get any scummier…
Perfect place for Ryan and his bluster. If Brees needs and explanation, get ready for 16 shootouts.
The winner in this whole deal could very well be the St. Louis Rams…..
However they did end up with Titus Young…..
Thanks for calling Two Men and A Truck How may I help you?
Rob Ryan: Hello, it’s Rob again. Can you please bring my belongings from St.Louis to New Orleans?
Operator: Sure Rob, you didn’t like the St. Louis gig?
Rob: just bring my damn things and a sandwiches, it will only take 5 minutes!

“Romeo, Romeo. Wherefore art thou, Romeo?”
We want Romeo!!!
“Bourbon Street? Hehe, where do I sign?…”.
I hope, as a Saints fan, they do not hire Rob Ryan. I don’t think he will bring what we need to the team. I just don’t like that Ryan clan, not any of them.
*cue the “5 minutes” comments.
Please people, enough…
How does this guy keep getting work as a DC? His defenses have been mediocre to downright bad.
How does this guy keep getting jobs?? I don’t care what his personality is like, I’m not talking about that. What’s the best rank one of his defenses have achieved? 20th in the league? I’m not even being facetious.
Instead of hiring Romeo Crennel we hire a Ryan brother who looks like a hobo.

Big mistake if true.
Strongly dislike. They don’t need a loudmouth drawing attention to the defense. A legend in his own mind.
They should hire him. The Dallas d was better when he was there. But also a muzzle.
I like when you say espn on espn crime.
It’s just…funny yknow?
Not going to happen. They are also going to interview assistants on the Super Bowl teams staffs.
Bad move Sean!!! Your team will be out of the playoffs next season!!!
He definitely cannot Help if you have no 3-4 personnel.
Good, everybody already hates them.
BIG mistake! Ryan brothers are not their daddy.
This is the only person in the world that would be worse than Greg Williams. For everyone wanting Crennel to be hired, well there are 8.5 million reasons why that won’t happen. Would you rather earn $8.5 millon from your buyout by KC, or would you rather make far less than that to be a DC? That is why Crennel won’t be anybodies DC this year. Not sure a college guy is the answer either. I was really hoping with the delay of getting a DC until after the Super Bowl it meant we would be looking at someone on the Ravens or 49′ers staff but I guess that isn’t the case.
The Cowboy’s players seemed to like him a lot, but this guy is not a good D-coordinator at all.
None of his defenses have been to the playoffs in 10 years as a coordinator. He’s only been in a top 10 defense once. He was the worst DC I have ever seen in Dallas. There’s always an excuse for his pathetic defenses too.
First season with Dallas – The strike was the excuse why our defense was terrible.
Second season with Dallas – Injuries were the excuse why his defense was terrible.
This year when the Saints defense fails miserably his excuse will be the Bounty Gate controversy from the year before…
I’m gonna be sick.
Overrated
Rob Ryan’s defensive success came with the Pats where he was linebacker coach. Since then he’s been DC with the Raiders and Browns (Raiders!?! and Browns!?! for godsake.)
At Dallas, there was Garret/Jerry Jones (Garret!?! and Jones!!!!?!) as HC. The D there has talent but he tripped over injury after injury last season.
Perhaps RRyan’s stars have lined up to put him position to have success with a proven winner under Sean Payton.
