You say that if we keep Vick and trade him we will owe him nothing and won’t take a cap hit. That is true but you forget that no one in the league will take his massive contract paired with poor play. So that leaves us with the only option of cutting him. In doing so we will have to pay him the $3 million unless he is signed by another team for more than that.

Managing the cap is the only thing we’re the “gold standard” of.

The Saints have overpaid Will Smith for years simply because he’s a starting defensive end; but he was no where near worth what he was paid and now the Saints have to cut that contract loose and take a big hit for same…

The problem for the Eagles is that before the carry over they are way over the projected 2013 cap. Once they carry over the $23 million they will only have $5 million in cap space to spend. The Eagles are still not in a good situation cap wise.

I cant believe there are still people that comment here and just make stuff up. Before I address this idiocy, lets back it up and answer some other’s questions…
First, the 89% rule is based off the league-wide cap, not your adjusted cap with carry-over included. Kingdp…even if they did have to spend 89% of the ~143 mil, it woudnt matter if that put them 6mil over the ~121 mil original cap because that number is not applicable to them anymore, they only have to be under their adjusted cap.
Now back to numblar7…ok buddy, heres what happens when you do a little research before hitting ‘submit’…
Your $5mil # is completely made up. Heres the facts…as of this very moment, the Eagles have exactly $15,661,051 in cap space after removing Demetress Bell. That is including the 23 mil carry-over. Right off the bat, you gotta take Vick off it because he wont be an Eagle next year. He has a cap # of $15.5 mil however, if he is cut, then he counts for 4.2 mil of dead money against the cap, but it still adds 11.3 mil onto our current cap, bringing it to $26,961,051. That is why the Eagles will NOT cut him, pay the $3mil roster bonus, and then find a trade partner. There is no dead money hit for a traded player, only a cut/waived one. So, if/when he is traded and if signed for less than $3mil, the difference will count against our cap(so substitute than number for the 4.2 to get our cap #) If he is signed for more than $3 mil, he will count as $0 against our cap, in which case you will add the $4.2 back onto our cap space, bringing it to $31,161,051.

Sounds like pretty good cap space to me.

They tried to exploit a loophole and were told they couldn’t. Which is exactly what would have happened if there was a cap.

That’s NOT a penalty. Nothing extra happened to them … they overpaid for bums and that money had to be treated same as always.

And, a simple thought: It’d be great if teams could sell their cap surplus to another team for the next year. Similar to how the Gov’t allows companies to share/sell pollution credits. It would benefit the players by keeping money in the pool, and it would help shrewd smaller market teams be more fiscally competitive. By installing a cap floor as is coming next year, you keep things fair.

But what about the year after?

Do if they go $23 mil over this year wouldn’t they just have to slash all that salary to get under the cap?

For instance, if the Eagles have $23m to carry-over into 2013, their adjusted salary cap would be around $143m. Does that mean the Eagles would be forced to spend 89% of that $143m (around $127m)?

Carrying the full $23m over into 2013 would potentially cause the Eagles to spend $6m over the actual salary cap as a minimum under those circumstances. That would be a good reason not to carry over the full allotment of salary cap space each season.
