Please please please please tell me you didn’t just call Warren Sapp an “average player” because he wasn’t. He is one of the best defensive tackles in NFL history.

I don’t get the Jim Plunkett love. Two rings makes you a Hall of Famer? Uh no. Teams win rings, not QBs. It is insulting to say otherwise. The guy never even made a Pro Bowl in an era where his peers decided if he should go. He’s not a Hall of Famer. He’s a big arm who got hot in 1980 and then had a great team behind him in 1983.

By this logic, if Trent Dilfer had won a second Super Bowl with the Ravens, he’d be a Hall of Famer. Which would be sad for the Hall of Fame.

Dude was a force when he was in there, and at many times in his career was unblockable, and was the heart of a very dominating defense.

They got it wrong with Strahan who was just as dominant, but Sapp deserves to be there. John Lynch and Derrick Brooks deserve to make it too.

Having said that, he’s still a HOF player. I think because of his personal demeanor, and overall obnoxiousness he should have been made to wait a few years, but either way he still deserves to be in the Hall.

That’s what’s wrong with letting the media decide who gets in and who doesn’t. They shouldn’t have to “set aside his Jekyll-and-Hyde tendencies when dealing with reporters”. They should only be voting on players based on their on the field performance and production. I’m not a Bucs/Sapp fan, but I’m not surprised he made the HOF just from the amount of chaos he caused from the DT position. Personally, I would have put in Charles Haley over Sapp or Strahan.

You do realize that they played different positions right? Defensive tackles like Sapp don’t get 150 sacks. They just don’t. The highest number is John Randle, who got 137.5 sacks as a defensive tackle. If you honestly believe that Strahan and Sapp should be compared by their sack numbers without giving Sapp a bit of a discount, then you don’t get playing on the defensive line.

He’dve gotten in next year if not this year.

He and Strahan basically had the same career. 7 Pro Bowls, 4 first team All-Pro selections, a Defensive Player of the Year award, both came very close to exclusive sack milestones (Sapp close to 100 for a DT, Strahan 150 for a DE), and they were leaders of their teams.

Both amazing players and both will be Hall of Famers. One down, one to go.

But I am surprised that Sapp got in first. I think the fact that Strahan is a “media darling” actually hurt his bid as people forget (or never knew) just how much of a force he was on the field because they see his goofy demeanor off it all the time. Strahan was a monster against the run as well as a fierce pass rusher a.d remained consistent his entire career. I think the fact that Parcells got in this year hurt Strahan as well as he is mostly remembered for his time with the Giants and the Hall probably doesn’t like inductees from the same franchise in the same year, if they can avoid it. I expect Strahan will get in next year.
