And they’ve missed the playoffs the year after each appearance.. just sayin.. and what did they do this year? missed the playoffs..again.. what did they do last year? got tebowed in the first round… what have the ravens done the last 5 years? made the playoffs and won a game EVERY SINGLE YEAR… all steelers fans do nowadays is lean on the PAST and cry themselves to sleep recounting the days of old. It’s time to accept the PRESENT where the ravens are reining superbowl champs and the new guard of the AFCN

I hear a lot about what a genius Ozzie Newsome is but the Ravens have a more screwed up cap situation than the Jets. After losing Ray Lewis they should be looking at good cap space, but Newsome failed to extend Flacco when the price was right.

Expect to see them restructure with Suggs and let Ed Reed play out his final year somewhere else.

Put this under the heading of writing an article based on nothing. Not going to happen. No way. No how. Suggs is the leader of the D. He is only 30 which is 5 years younger than the average steeler defender. Most importantly is that he is a bona Fidel 3 down player. He sets the edge well. He drops in coverage well, and he is an excellent pass rusher. Half of kruger’s sacks come because Suggs and ngata command double teams. When he goes to another team as a FA, he will be a bust. At best he is a third down pass rush guy.

To the steeler fan who talks about being in 3 bowls in the last seven years, I would remind you that their record is 1 win, 1 loss, and 1 gift from the Zebras. The ravens are 2 – 0 in their 2 SB’s in 12 years and have been in the league only since 96/97. Give us your extra 35 years and we will have 6 also.

all this talk about paul kruger makes it seem like he was the second coming of god or something, have any of you tooting puals horn ever watched him play prior to this year? He is so overrated it makes me sick, i don’t even want to sign him to a reduced contract, id rather roll the dice and see what we get from upshaw who is going to be a stud

and there is no way suggs is getting cut, he is the general on that defense now

Suggs isn’t going anywhere. Neither is Flacco. Kreuger, Birk and Williams are gone. If they really want to free up cap space, cut Oher. There are plenty of right tackles with his ability available at a much lower price. Reed may leave, but that will be up to him. There will always be a place for him on the Ravens for whatever they can afford. Ellerbe is up in the air. We may not be able to keep him, but I understand that some Steeler linebackers may be available.

Suggs is much more than a “sacks or nothing” player.

But… I actually think the way the league is going, they might be better served to let him go.

It’s not an indictment on Suggs… Just what fits better for the Ravens.

They’d probably like more speed up front, and. Kruger and Upshaw might give that to them.

They have to keep ellerbe, because after him… There’s nothing in the linebacker corps.

Suggs night be the best option to let go. Of course, it only matters if they don’t overspend for Flacco. If they do that, then it really doesn’t matter. They’d have their hands tied anyway.

3fingerlenny: It appears as though we think along the same lines, however, at this writing, there are 28 thumbs down to my observation that Mr. Suggs would have a difficult task securing employment in the “Real World.” Note, neither of us said he was not a talented football player, because he clearly is. I wonder what those perceptive 28 critics think his employable skills are? Could it be his education, intelligence, his “people skills,” his SPOTLESS police record, his eloquence and charm, or perhaps his even tempered disposition? The above 28 must have some unique insights that are not apparent to others.

Suggs is a 3 down player that offenses have had to shceme for. Kruger is a situational pass rusher who did not flourish until Suggs retured to the field. No way Suggs is cut in part to keep Kruger. Kruger will be allowed to walk and I am sure a cheaper alternative has already been targeted by Ozzie and company.

I find it very unlikely that the Ravens cut Suggs when they are already losing Ray & possibly Reed and probably Kruger. Who would be the leader on Defense? There would be an absence of outside Linebackers and middle linebackers with Ellerbe a free agent. At the same point, as already mentioned. Kruger had two sack until Suggs came back. There is no way they let Suggs go to keep Kruger. Kruger is a product of a system whose line has Suggs and Ngata on the other side. When they are getting doubled, Krugers lane is open. Kruger is very good but the Ravens will miss him as much as they missed Thomas or Scott. He’ll be another LB that is a product of our system.

I love how Ozzie has been misquoted all week. He said they wouldn’t restructure deals but quantified it as unless they perceived the player would play out their contract length. Dont be surprised at all if Yanda, Suggs, or Ngata restructure as all are likely to outplay contract length/extension.

Suggs is going nowhere. Suggs and Upshaw OLB next season. Kruger is gone chasing high dollars elsewhere like Jarret Johnson last year.

Boldin will sign a 2-3 extension at reduced salary reducing the cap number.

Reed is all but gone. He will get higher money elsewhere.

I think an extension would be more likely than severing ties.

Suggs is one year removed from being the best Defensive player in the league. He played through rehabbing a ruptured Achilles, as well as a torn biceps, and yet even with those two significant injuries his presence on the field was enough to keep only a single blocker on Paul Kruger…allowing him to wreak havoc, especially in the playoffs.

Suggs has two years remaining of a six year contract. Extend him two or three seasons (effectively a four or five year deal) and reduce the huge base salaries due ($6.4M in 2013 and $7.8M in 2014).

Do the same thing to Boldin.
Do the same thing to Jacoby Jones.

All of those players are still preforming at a high level, and extending important players to reduce current cap charges isn’t the same thing as overreaching and hanging a bunch of dead money out there on players who are very unlikely to reach the end of a new 2,3,4 year deal.
