Terrell Suggs: I thought Kaepernick was all hype, but I was wrong

Terrell Suggs, Colin Kaepernick AP

Ravens outside linebacker Terrell Suggs admits that before the Super Bowl, he didn’t think much of 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Going into the game, I thought it was all hype,” Suggs told Jim Rome. “He’s only had nine starts and then I’m going down the line at the teams he’s playing and I’m like ‘OK, alright, he’s got some good stats, but we will see.’”

But after seeing Kaepernick pass for 302 yards and run for 62 yards against the Ravens in the Super Bowl, Suggs is a believer.

“When you go in there and you’re playing a guy like that, I hate quarterbacks, but that kid is the truth and I have the upmost respect for him,” Suggs said. “I don’t think he needs to hold his head down at all because he’s going to play in a few [Super Bowls].”

Everyone who watched the Super Bowl had to come away impressed with Kaepernick. Even a Raven who hates quarterbacks.

Keep the ravens news coming. As the premiere franchise in this league, it’s hard to read about all the other teams that just don’t matter right now. Ravens World Champs!!!!

  12. ravensdominate says: Feb 9, 2013 8:13 AM

Why is another Steeler fan talking trash? You are so irrelevant right now. It’s been so great to watch the ravens dismantle great QBs this season, create so many great story lines, and all the while Pittsburgh isn’t even mentioned. Cheers!

  13. jakec4 says: Feb 9, 2013 8:18 AM

I didn’t realize he could throw with that much velocity. Some nice softer looking throws too. Like the one Vernon Davis dropped. The Ravens played RG3, Andrew Luck, and Kaepernick this season, CK looked like the best one. Whether he keeps doing it is on him.

  14. yinzer7 says: Feb 9, 2013 8:24 AM

Pittsburgh would have to be in the playoffs for Baltimore to go through them. Or in the case of last year, get past Tim Tebow. BTW, how’s Lamar Woodley?

  15. umainebearman says: Feb 9, 2013 8:28 AM

Colin no doubt was impressive in his first year. Difficult to defend, difficult to predict, very athletic. Name me 1 option b that wasnt all of those in year 1. Now let me know what happened to them in the next year after the league got film on them. Cam? ConVick? Washington, Seattle, and San Fran congrats on this past years success its pretty much done now. Gimmicky offenses will not win championships.

  16. gonavybeatarmy says: Feb 9, 2013 8:28 AM

Suggs thought Colin K was all hype.

The rest of America thinks Lewis and Suggs are on PED’s.

  17. ravensdominate says: Feb 9, 2013 8:30 AM

  18. getyourownname says: Feb 9, 2013 8:31 AM

True that the Ravens did not go through Pittsburgh. Or NYJ, either.

It’s not possible to go through a team that isn’t good enough to make the playoffs.

Steeler fans should start focuing on being able to beat Cincy and Cleveland.

  23. ravenmuscle says: Feb 9, 2013 8:44 AM

Love seeing Steeler fans come on this board and talk trash.

Their defense is ANCIENT…Polamalu and Harrison are washed up…they have NO running backs…AND their quarterback has lost his velocity FOREVER since his shoulder was busted up.

From now on the Ravens will rule the AFC for YEARS to come. The Steelers are a NON FACTOR and its so much fun seeing them sitting HOME and watching the Ravens win Superbowl after Superbowl…PLUS…who would EVER want to play at Heinz Field…its a dump.

  24. totallyuselessme says: Feb 9, 2013 8:45 AM

It’s hard not to look at it and say Kapp’s gonna be a star, and likely a bigger one for a longer period of time than RG3.

I also appreciate how candid Suggs is. Whether it’s for good or ill, he doesn’t mask his feelings in PR and I actually appreciate that even if I don’t like what he says all the time. There’s nothing fake about him.

He runs very upright. Like a sprinter. The only thing that worries me is that he might take a shot and get seriously hurt with that type of run.

Not true about ‘not respecting’ the Ravens. The Ravens were the better playing team when it mattered and for that reason they are super bowl champions. The 49ers were an undisciplined team all the way up to the power outage and if genuine 49er fans were honest with themselves had it not been for the outage that game could have easily gone to 45-13.

When a player (VD) gets an ‘illegal procedure’ call on the very FIRST play of the game that’s telling of undisciplined play. When a player runs a ball back 109 yards for a SB record because everybody thinks he’s gonna down it….that’s undisciplined play. I’m a die hard 49ers fan and I know when to call a beating a beating. Good game Ravens. You earned the right to be called Champions!

But yes….CK7 is THAT good and only going to get better.

  37. jikkle49 says: Feb 9, 2013 9:15 AM

Kaepernick will be a top 5 QB next season and in top 3 in the near future.

He has the overall best physical skill set of all the QBs with Cam being a close second but unlike Cam Kaepernick is much better in terms of the mental aspect and has the attributes you want mentally from a QB.

And regardless of what you think of Harbaugh he can flat out coach and get the most out of the QB position so Kaepernick is an ideal spot from a coaching standpoint as well.

As long as Kaepernick works hard and keeps gaining experience from each start he’ll be a star in the league.

Congratulations Baltimore Ravens on being champions. It was well earned. Can some of you please stop the “no one respects us” stuff though? It’s getting old. There have been other improbable SB runs before. Also be classy. It’s dumb to say the Ravens are the only relevant team. It’s the off season. Everyone is relevant now. The nfl doesn’t really celebrate SB champs past the first few days. I wanted SB 43 to be talked about forever but it wasn’t. As a Steelers fan, I say enjoy your championship. And next time a Steelers fan says we have 6, don’t go yelling “its the past”. Every fan should be proud of all rings. They last forever

A little thinned skinned about having to defend slash all the time you must be getting tired. I am not telling anyone something revolutionary that their parents shouldn’t have taught them about respect…it’s earned by more than winning a Super Bowl .. 51. 49ersandshivabowl says: Feb 9, 2013 9:59 AM

It IS laughable, though, to read all the Steeler vitriol being thrown at the Ravens. No well-informed Steeler fan would ever talk smack at this juncture of events when the totality of the Steeler defense is a geriatric M*A*S*H* unit going all the way back to the loss to the Broncos where the whole nation saw how quickly they had aged. That particular Steel-curtain has become significantly rusted out and weathered. And let’s not talk about the mess the offensive line is in too.

TRUE fans know when to sit down, be quiet, take your lumps as they come and then cheer and jeer when valid circumstances avail themselves. Like it or not THIS is the Ravens time and it will be ALL off-season. No number of Lombardi trophies, whether 6 or 0 will take that away. Suck it up.

Yes, the Ravens have earned their respect. However, if you are going to call “illegal procedure” on the very first play in a Super Bowl (let them play pundits), how can you not call pass interference on the very last play? At the very least, you call it on both sides, offset the penalties, and replay the down. Or how about the block in the back of Bruce Miller #49 on that kickoff return (watch the tape), or most obvious to EVERYONE who was watching, the numerous holds on the intentional safety play?

But yes, CK7 is indeed the real deal

  53. scoobies05 says: Feb 9, 2013 10:02 AM

And can we only have knowledgeable fans talk football? I respect all fans who know the game. I know the Steelers and ravens like the back of my hand. Anyone who calls the Steelers defense ancient needs to do some research. We’ll have 3-4 starters max that will be full time starters. The media just wants out defense to be old and fall off. Fact is the Steelers and ravens are the best rivalry because they’re such even teams. Everyone knows that. As long as Ben and Flacco are playing, it’s staying that way.

I see this as a place to discuss the article, which is about Sizzle’s opinion of the 9ers young QB, the skills that this young man has and how great he could be one day. Also, Sizzle eating a little crow and giving props to the kid.

Some of you guys take this stuff too far, and some of you are my fellow Ravens fans.

Well, a lot of it is the story behind those tattoos. It’s a good story, but it’s not headline material. Next is how he gave the Ravens their props for winning the Super Bowl. He was nothing but humble in that situation. After that, is when he took full responsibility for the int when he overthrew Moss. He didn’t have to come out and say that.

Actually it’s pretty apparent if you dig a little deeper and don’t make awful assumptions. Do a little research on the guy and get back to me.

  66. jarvis1104 says: Feb 9, 2013 10:43 AM

Why would anyone say the Steelers have now fallen off? There’s no rule that the Steelers automatically fall off when Baltimore wins it all. Did you also think we were done when we went 9-7 and missed the playoffs a couple of yrs ago? The Steelers were only a couple of plays from being 10-6 just like a couple of plays could’ve made the ravens 8-8. Sometimes things just go your way. This is how you win championships. Check back over the past few seasons, the Steelers and ravens records are nearly identical. I accept that Baltimore was better this yr and I also accept these teams are really even. Stop looking for stupid edges. And can both sides stop bringing up the legal stuff? It’s ridiculous. I’m a die hard Steelers fan and one of my best friends happens to be Ravens fan. So to summarize- Steeler trolls all the ravens out for a 24 hour rule and staying classy when they like to point out their 6 trophies that are slightly older than 24 hours old, and their 63 years in the league prior to the Ravens existence. An don’t forget they LOVE to jump on a 13 year old ray story and neglect their 2 year old Ben story. But we are a classless fanbase? Go it.

Very clearly stated now go have some coffee and wake up dude…

We hate the team’s not each other.

That says it all great post!

  80. allidoiswin55 says: Feb 9, 2013 11:28 AM

Kaep is all hype he played okay at best. He has beastly physical attributes Like his disceptive speed and are arm strength but he lacks a great football IQ needed at the qb position..

He stares down wr’s and doesn’t read coverages and or decipher blitzes quickly either.

This off season could fix that and if so it’s only a matter of time before he’s a top 5 nfl qb. As of now his lack of experience is why he’s just about a top 12 qb. The hype is for what he ” can be”… Not what he is now.. That hype is justified!

  81. billb49 says: Feb 9, 2013 11:29 AM

Very classy of Suggs to give Kaepernick his props. Don’t let a few fans fool you. Most Niner fans give credit where credit is due. The Ravens made the most plays and they deserved to win. And congrats to Ravens fans. Your team has finally given us Niner fans a taste of what our team has dealt out to millions of other fans. Hey, it doesn’t feel good, but now we know.

And nice to see someone acknowledge that they thought Kaepernick was hype but were wrong. There are a few Falcons fans around who could have broken down and made the same admission, but I haven’t seen any. Those of us who have been watching him closely are pretty excited about future seasons with an offense built especially for him.

  82. Nofoolnodrool says: Feb 9, 2013 11:30 AM

hey nofool…i suppose its ok for your fanbase to honor a rapist. because we both know ray is as much of a murderer as ben is a rapist. and wow what a franchise..started in 1933 and it took over 40 years to win a championship. ravens have 2 in 17 years. as far as trolling. funny how u and bigben and crown and some of the other ones post on raven related articles to tell raven fans how to act. please get over yourself

Time for a history lesson scoobie after forty sorry years we won a Lombardi so in the last forty years we have:

Six Lombardi’s — think you knew that, but had to be sure
    Eight AFC ——– championships
    Fifteen AFC………finalists
    Twenty one —— division championships
    Twentyfive—— playoff berths
    Thirty———— winning seasons
    Eleven———- losing seasons
You are off to a good start, and now that slash is gone you can get some respect

  83. jprcox says: Feb 9, 2013 11:42 AM

A major element that makes these QB’s good is their ability to run. When teams have to counter that on Defense, it opens up the backfield.

HOWEVER, as in the game Skins had with Seattle where RG3 was hurt, the Skins couldn’t do anything when their star QB was hurt but still able to play. It will be interesting to see if you can have a QB last a full season doing that, and then last season after season getting hit 10x more than a typical pocket passer. These “upsides” to QB being able to run has a “COST” – and I dont think we have fully seen the end result. We will next year.

  84. letemplay says: Feb 9, 2013 11:49 AM

Why would anyone say the Steelers have now fallen off?
    ———————————————-

I think that a better question to ask would be, “Why would anyone say anything about the Steelers at all.” This is, after all, an article about Kaep and Suggs’ comments, but look up a few posts and there’s some ancillary list of the steelers accomplishments. They are impressive. I can not deny that, but they are irrelevant.

Are other fan bases starting to see what we have to deal with, with some of these steelers fans? It’s exhausting.

  85. baymac408 says: Feb 9, 2013 11:52 AM

  87. dirtyjersey9er says: Feb 9, 2013 11:58 AM

I keep getting confused with how to feel about the Ravens post-Super Bowl.

On one hand you have stuff like Cary Williams acting like he didn’t push that ref and say the 49ers were playing dirty while he is shown punching Davis. Then you have Flacco saying he’d run from the sideline to tackle Ginn(which btw would have given the 49ers a chance to at least get a game tying FG). Then you have some of the fan posts here.

But on the other hand you have classy comments from John Harbaugh, Ray Rice, and Terrell Suggs, and others. Then you have a few of the good commenters here.

So it’s hard to decide if I dislike them or still have the level of respect I had before the Super Bowl prep.

  88. dirtyjersey9er says: Feb 9, 2013 12:00 PM

Of course had we come out to play like the Ravens did this game would have been a whole different story in the first half. That probably would have changed the game.(More scoring in the first half probably would have led to more run plays in the second half for example)

Ravens came to play for 4 quarters and the 49ers for 2.

  89. fanbet says: Feb 9, 2013 12:20 PM

I’m a 49er fan since ’67 and congratulate the Ravens. They made plays and deserve to be champion.

I think all Suggs was referring to is that until you see him, you don’t realize how big Kap is, how fast he is, and the velocity with which he delivers the ball. Suggs saw the toolbox to be a success in the league, and he has the other piece which is talent around him.

Steeler fans need to show respect, and in particular that nofool dude. You’re actually quite a fool. Winners think about what they’re going to achieve today. Losers re-live what they did yesterday. The 49ers 5 rings have no relevance in a discussion about the 2012 49ers, and the Steeler’s 6 certainly have no relevance to the 2012 8-8 version. I would suggest offering your congratulations to the Ravens, or saying nothing at all.

I’m not saying there weren’t bad calls but the facts are the GAME IS OVER. It’s done. It’s waisted emotional and mental injury turning into a spurned Seahawks fan (ala how they got screwed on a call in a super bowl).

The fact is HAD the 49ers won the asterisk’s everybody would have called for was that there was a 39 minute blackout that allowed them to win.

I refuse to be a fan of a team that loses and huff and puff about coulda, woulda and shoulda. The Ravens played 4 quarters. The 49ers played 2. End of story. Had they played all 4 quarters perhaps I wouldn’t be so remiss in conceding the world championship. But they didn’t. And now they sit as the offseason’s 2nd place’s 1st place loser. Period.

Any appeal to the game where the TEAM was shut down and not just CK7 needs to be taken into context too. Unquestionably the ‘Hawks ruled that Sunday Night game but it’s interesting that not a single ‘Hawks fan ever talks about the following week’s game with the Rams….at home….that was very nearly lost. The fact is the ‘Hawks played in the country’s loudest and most epic home field advantaged stadium playing a very emotional game with high adrenaline and something to prove to the nation watching. VERY similar to the what the 49ers did the week before except playing in New England against the most up-tempo NFL offense in history.

It’s simply naive to be a Seahawks fan and believe for one moment that the domination that happened that night was a clear indicator of future dominance. Again…..I reiterate…….you escaped the following week a loss AT HOME by the Rams by the skin of your chin. The win against the 49ers was bad but no where near an indicator of supremacy. But we’ll have next season to show for that.

Ravens got some help from the zebras, but they were the better team that day. John Harbaugh is a great coach. He is like Jim but with control of his emotions. I appreciate what Suggs said about CK. He is really fun to watch and hopefully he will continue to develop. It never felt right having a team all about defense. That is not the 49ers’ legacy.

Kapernick will be extremely lucky to get the chance to play in another SB. That is just reality. So, Suggs thinking the Kid has a few more in him is a little far fetched. the Ravens have been to 2, ever.

Some of the best ever in the history of the game never won the SB or a Championship of any kind. It takes a lot of luck and a lot of skill to get to that game. Also, you have to have a great TEAM.

Lets be realistic. Kaepernick’s success in the passing game was a direct result of his ability to run. When he moves from the pocket, he connects on passes. He throws a lot of short passed when scrambling. It won’t take a lot to change the way Kaepernick moves and plays if DCs get a plan together.

Anyway, if he is legit after next season with no one on the bench good enough to press him for the job, I’ll say he is legit. Until then, I am seeing a guy who had some success just like dozens of other QBs have had the same success for a year or less and were gone from the game.

Seahawks ”barely beat the Rams” comments by 9er fans are hilarious.

1st of all YOU niners didn’t escape!! You tied on random flag to save your a** and then lost!

2nd the Hawks played a vanilla game against the rams because it didn’t affect seeding much and they didn’t run barely any read option/ shotgun.

3rd the Seahawks did not get screwed in then superbowl on 1 call!! The calls directly attributed to 14pts for the Steelers. Remember been admitting he didn’t score??? Not the same as a questionable call. The calls on a Hawks QB for a low hit when he was tackling a db on an INT. How quickly you forget about the MEANING, being screwed. Weren’t even debatable calls that cost they were OBVIOUSLY bad!!

4th the ref came out later and by his own admission said his clear one sided bad calls most likely cost the Seahawks the SB! And he couldn’t sleep right for years because because of his conscious!!! That’s about as close as you can get to admitted fraud homie!!!!

Not even remotely close to the yrs SB so stop with the worst officiated game of all time because it is simply not true!

No one remembers the loser of the SB as you all point out the lack of SB trophies by my team but forget that the Niners have only been relevant for 2 SEASONS IN OVER A DACADE!!!!

Teams have ups and downs but the Niners have been bottom feeders drafting in the top 10 for nearly half my life! Their back to being relevant get over it. Gain a bit of perspective please!

Ravens won fair and square just because some questionable calls didn’t go your way does not change that! Give credit where it is due!

Flacco and CO used what other teams showed them to win. You can pas on the niners secondary bc they are mediocre in coverage!

Ray lewis told Shannon Sharpe they weren’t going to loose to a qb who can’t READ COVERAGE and Just looks for Crab then takes off to run.

Yes Kaep hit Davis for yards but let’s be honest the kid has a cannon if He could read coverages he’d be a top 3 qb in the league! He is NOT EVEN CLOSE YET. He could get their has the physical skills but mentality he is not within a mile of that!

  121. hor2012 says: Feb 12, 2013 1:09 PM

Frist of all congrads to The Raven and 49ers for a game that turned out to be pretty good although I had my doubts earlier. I agree with Suggs CK is a beast.

  122. 9eryder says: Feb 13, 2013 3:56 PM

First off, the Ravens were just the better fundamental team that day. The first play of the game the penalty was on Crab not Vernon as he covered up the TE in the formation. Secondly it has been discussed over and over that people will catch up to the read option….this is basically impossible as the option has been around for over 50 years….except now the qbs can throw as well…the problem is the injury problems it presents to the franchise….As a college coach looking for ways to stop the read is an everyday task, but in reality it’s pick ur poison.

  123. miguel3557 says: Feb 14, 2013 6:48 PM

If you want to know not only how good Kaepernick already is and what his upside future potential is, ask yourself, which team wouldn’t trade for him to be their quarterback for the next 10 years. Maybe Washington, maybe Seattle, but if the Steelers wanted to trade Ben for Kaep straight up and you were the 49ers general manager, would you go through with that trade? Don’t think so. How about if the Giants offered Eli? Don’t think so. How about if the Broncos offered Payton? Nope, don’t think so. The only player that comes to mind that might be an equal trade over the next 10 years would be Kaep for Aaron Rodgers, but I think the 49ers would also nix that trade.

All you folks talking about if he improves as a reader of defenses or going through his reads, he’ll be in the top 5 or top 10 quarterbacks are full of it. He already is a top 5 quarterback and will only get better. Nobody in the league has his fastball, and his accuracy, even on long balls, has been surprisingly good. He’s not as fast as RGIII, but he may be an overall better runner. He’s an incredibly gifted athlete who will get better over time.

And, as a Niner fan for the last 59 years, one day he’ll approach the reverence Niner fans feel for Joe Montana. His statistics will far surpass those of Montana and Young or Brodie or any other quarterback in 49er history. He’s a better runner than Steve Young, the best running quarterback in 49er history. As to him getting back to the Super Bowl, don’t be surprised if it’ll be next year. The Niners are on the brink of a dynasty that could get Kaepernick 3-4 opportunities in the next 6 years.

My only concern is Jim Harbaugh, an infantile phony jerk if ever there was one. How this guy can equate his juvenile temper tantrums with “being intense” offends the intelligence of the average fan. I think he has plenty football smarts, but let’s face it, Bill Walsh never sent out a 49er team from the tunnel that got behind by 17 and 22 points in successive playoff/championship games. Finally, if it’s true that the 49ers had the #1 offensive line and Ngata was out of the game during the last four plays, why didn’t the 49ers just run the ball the last 3 downs to get four yards? I also disliked Harbaugh’s dishonesty about chasing Manning but not really and giving the quarterback’s position to Kaepernick supposedly because Harbaugh was going with the “hot hand.” In the two games before Smith’s injury, Smith had thrown 4 TD passes, no interceptions, and had a 93% (27 out of 29 passes) completion rate, about as hot as one can get as an NFL quarterback. Harbaugh’s press conferences are opportunities for him to pout and blame others. Unlike Bill Walsh, Harbaugh has no class at all.
