Source: Rob Ryan’s contract hasn’t even been drafted yet

Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Ryan protests a penalty during their NFL football game against Washington Redskins in Landover Reuters

So I’m off for a couple of hours for some first-Sunday-without-football-since-Labor-Day-weekend time with the family and as soon as I get back to the official PFT Commodore 64 the first thing I utter is, “What I miss?”

An editor at NFL.com tweeted that new Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan can’t talk to the media without the approval of Saints V.P. of public relations Greg Bensel.  Bensel said via Twitter that the report is “100% false.”

Here’s a specific piece of evidence supporting the notion that the report is 100 percent false.  Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Ryan hasn’t signed a contract yet.  He hasn’t signed it because it hasn’t been drafted yet.

In fairness to the original report, this could be a case of the reporter/editor being in the right church but the wrong pew.  Regardless of the league’s rules regarding media availability, plenty of coaches keep a tight leash on their assistants.  Given that Rob Ryan has a reputation for running his Ring Ding regurgitator, it would make plenty of sense for the Saints to demand discretion.

Who cares if that’s not in the contract?  You hire the guy and you tell the guy this is the way it’s going to be, or the relationship isn’t going to last.

It’s a common disconnect between the “wherefores” and the real world.  The paper says what the paper says, but the people behind the paper know how they expect things to be.  And if Ryan ever finds himself in a situation where he’s slamming on Sean Payton’s desk a document that nowhere restricts Ryan from talking to the press whenever and however and wherever he wants, then he’s in football’s version of Elysium, and his career with the Saints is already dead.

So while he’s on vacation it’s being reported that he had a done deal with the Rams. That report is false and weeks later when they actually meet its described as a “bad fit”. Now we have this. How about people start reporting facts? If I want to read speculation I’ll go look on twitter.

The contract and subsequent signature is coming ” in like 5 minutes”.

This would explain why there was a touch of confusion when a NO radio station was claiming he wasn’t actually hired yet but, The Times Picayune had made it official and the Saints’ official website had the announcement on its front page.

Payton had been saying all week that he would announce the decision Tues or Weds, then Grantham dropped out and they announced Rob late on Friday.

Isn’t “late Friday” when you announce things you want buried?

In his defense, Ryan never said those five minutes would be consecutive.

This guy can do it. He inly started running his mouth when rex went to 2 afc championships on strong defense. When rob was in cleveland, he did a pretty decent job with minimal talent, and the best part? No one knew who he was. But then rex gets his head coaching job, starts making an ass out of himself, then people turn to his brother and shove a mic in his mouth to see if he’ll do the same, and he did. What he needs to do is keep his volumr on low, and his bounties high and he’ll do well in new orleans.

How many stories are there going to be about this guy?

  13. kattykathy says: Feb 10, 2013 3:59 PM

there are so many other quality D C’s available. Why in the world did Sean pick this guy? The last thing the Saints need is an overrated DC, whose mouth constantly brings unwanted attention to the team

Brees needs to get the owner to change the name of the team. “Saints” offends the atheists.

I wonder if Buddy is offended that the youngins are besmirching his reputation?

Really? Less than 2 hours prior to the headline above you wrote …

“Report: Rob Ryan’s Saints contract limits his contact with the media”

So if you use the term “source” or “report” then it’s someone else’s error? I see. The shlock journalistic drivel continues.

Keep it undrafted!!! Then tell him you changed your mind and let him walk!!!

He’s no good for New Orleans!!!

This story is so weird, we should start calling Rob Ryan, Rob Teo instead.
