Suggs doesn’t think he’s Lewis’s successor as Ravens’ leader

Ray Lewis had been the undisputed leader of the Ravens for more than a decade. Terrell Suggs doesn’t think he can fill the leadership void left by Lewis’s retirement all by himself.

Asked on NFL Network’s Total Access whether he becomes the Ravens’ leader now that Lewis is retired, Suggs said that he actually sees quarterback Joe Flacco as the leader the rest of the team will look to.

“We’re not worried about that right now. We’re still on this magic carpet ride, we’re enjoying the championship. Regardless of what anyone says, Joe Flacco, he’s proven he’s one hell of a leader, so I don’t have any problems sharing the role with him,” Suggs said.

Suggs added that the Ravens would “probably not” have won the Super Bowl if it weren’t for Lewis’s announcement prior to the playoffs that he planned to retire. Suggs said the rest of the team became more focused knowing that it would be Lewis’s last ride.

“You could say what sparked it was Ray’s announcement when he said that this would be his last playoff run with us,” Suggs said. “I would definitely say that was hands-down what sparked it and got our minds going in the right place.”

Suggs also said the power outage at the Super Bowl was not an issue.

“We weren’t going to let something like the lights going out steal our glory,” Suggs said. “We were like, ‘Once we get the lights back on, we’re going to get back to this ass-whipping.'”

It was the last ass-whipping Suggs and Lewis got to administer together.

  1. Get back to this ass whipping? I wouldn’t say all that. The Ravens started getting smoked when the lights came back on. 28-6 third quarter leads shouldn’t come down to a goal line stand with under two minutes to play. Definitely not the stuff of ass whippings. More like survival.

  2. Just gotta love Suggsy. T-sizzle is right about one thing…the ass-whipping of the Steelers will continue AS USUAL as well as the ass-whipping of the Patriots.

Most likely will not repeat…but totally crushing the Steelers and Patriots is a gimme.

  3. what ass-whipping together in their last game? Ray Lewis was getting burned and smoked the entire game by Crabtree and Vernon Davis..Suggs sure didn’t make any difference in the game as well, but together both were very ineffective.

  4. Love me some Suggs. General Joe will be taking over from here. The silent assassin, he may not be flashy, but guy gets the job done. Hate on haters.

  5. Suggs always struck me as a captain or colonel rather than a general. He’s great at what he does, you need him and his abilities, but he’s not the guy who should lead the entire team.

I have no idea who the leader will be on defense next year, but he’ll have to be a strong individual.

  6. “New Leader” Flacco’s use of the F-bomb on live television might scandalize some of the Ravens players and cause them to be distracted during the games.

  7. The whipping he is referring to was the one that gave them a 28-6 lead, no matter what they say the went from seek and destroy before the lights went out to just hang on when the lights came on . On the 49ers first touchdown pollard wasn’t trying to tackle the receiver he was trying to get on sports center. No one wants to hear that

  8. Flacco is a leader all the sudden? Looks like his pucker factor was pretty high in that 4th quarter as the niners came storming back. He just sat on the bench with a funny look on his face.

And Suggs? Tuck in that lip before you get it caught in a tripwire.

  9. @ravensmuscle…you clearly delusional…last I check this years champs got beat by the Steelers 3rd string and damn near lost to the second string….yea im pretty sure the mighty Steelers…only six time champion….are clearly afraid of the likes of you….what a bandwagon good for nothing carpet riding chump!!!!

  10. To be another Ray Lewis you need to have been involved in a murder and fathered many kids out of wedlock.Suggs is halfway there.

  11. I’m a Ravens fan, but I got a good chuckle from this…well played sir.

He couldn’t even lead the orcs during the battle for middle earth in Lord of the Rings

  12. Hate all you want haters…but don’t forget Suggs will be back 100% from his achilles injury this year and that means the DEFENSIVE player of the year will be back 100% along with a 100% healthy Ngata and 100% healthy Ladarius Webb…our top cover corner.

Our weakest link, Ray Lewis, will be gone…but much, much stronger with Danell Elerbe taking over for Ray with his blazing speed.

The Ravens defense is NO LONGER AGING…it will be awesomely YOUNG.

  13. Suggs added that the Ravens would “probably not” have won the Super Bowl if it weren’t for Lewis’s announcement prior to the playoffs that he planned to retire

Actually, they “probably not” would have won the Super Bowl if Denver’s DB made a play at the end of the game (or at any other time during the game, for that matter).

  14. i think you idiots are missing the point being made… he is telling retrospectively that when the lights were out they were not letting it get to them and yes at that time, it was still an asswhipping.. he wasnt saying it in present terms.

So you idiots can understand, it was a reflection of their thought process during the light show..

  15. Actually, they “probably not” would have won the Super Bowl if Denver’s DB made a play at the end of the game (or at any other time during the game, for that matter).

couldnt the same be said for most games? your argument is invalid at best and at worst, makes no logical sense whatsoever…
So the Giants should have an * by the 07 win because Harrison couldnt knock the ball away from tyree?

you could also then say that NE shouldnt have been in last years super bowl because Lee Evans drops a td.

was that a lucky play? sure, but to inply that the win doesnt count because of one play that “shouldnt have happened” is just retarded. It happened and you need to grow up and deal with it.

  16. Is he referring to beating down his girlfriend and trying to pour bleach on her and their infant child when he talks about ‘ass whipping’? The torch passes from one criminal (Lewis) to another (Suggs). Baltimore is so proud.

  17. So the murderer left and they are looking to replace him with a wife-beater as the team’s leader. Now all Suggs needs to do is groom a drug dealer or something to be his replacement when he retires.

  18. suggs and flaco will lead this team
to another plafoff berth..we average a title
    1 out of 8 yrs[lame steelers avg 1 in 7]
    steelers are done

  19. all you punk ass steeler fans… since the Ravens came to the league in 1996, you only only won 2 super bowls like us!! oh but we undefeated in superbowls because yall got y’all ass whipped by Green Bay!!

  20. all you haters , get off our jocks cause your team sat home watching the game!!!!you think you know about us, but you have no idea… you call it luck that we beat Denver , Patriots, 49er’s.. but if were your damn team you wouldn’t say it! half of you never even played the game to speak about it!

  21. all you punk ass steeler fans… since the Ravens came to the league in 1996, you only only won 2 super bowls like us!! oh but we undefeated in superbowls because yall got y’all ass whipped by Green Bay!!

This is why raven fans seeking respect won’t get any. Hopefully this moron has some one helping him cross the streets of Baltimore …hey a statue to a murderer and now this intelligent post …makes ya want to pack and move to Charm City… Junior high school at best..know him ravenator?
