Richard Sherman calls Roddy White “an easy matchup”

AP

Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman and Falcons receiver Roddy White locked horns when their teams met in the playoffs. Sherman says that was an easy day for him.

“He’s an easy matchup. He’ll be another easy matchup next year,” Sherman said of White on NFL Live. “This is just fact.”

Although White caught five passes for 76 yards and a touchdown as the Falcons beat the Seahawks, Sherman said only one of those catches came while he was covering White, and that even to get that one ball to White the Falcons had to disguise what they were doing, because they knew they couldn’t just put White out there for Sherman to cover him man-to-man.

“You saw the game — he caught one pass on me the whole game,’ Sherman said. “It’s probably a lifetime achievement for him, so congratulations. It’s a rarity. It’ll rarely ever happen. I think we play them again next year. It won’t happen again. They have to hide him in the formation. They have to bring him down. He can’t just stand out there and play receiver. They have to hide him and do everything to get him open.”

The Seawhawks will play in Atlanta again during the regular season this year. White — and Falcons fans — are sure to remember Sherman’s comments.

  1. I’m going to be honest here. I love this guy. With everybody whining about “class” and all, this guy just tells it like it, not to mention he’s pretty darn good.

  2. This guy is idiot. He’s right about one thing tho. We will see them in the dome again next year.

  3. Dude sure talks a lot…. Surprised he isn’t a Jet…

You know your team lost the game, right? Who cares how many catches he had against you personally?

  4. ..won’t be an issue next year – the falcons got their spike this year and will now slip back down into mediocrity – buh bye!

  5. It’s up to Shoddy White to prove him wrong. Should be interesting I hope both players are injury free when they meet this season.

  6. Like Richard Sherman or not, he kinda backs it up no? I would say after a healthy Revis, he is the best Man Corner in the game.

You’re always gonna have lil ninnies that don’t like it when someone talks shi, but it’s probably a good bet that Sherman doesn’t give a flying fu– what you think.

  7. Sherman is such a clown. He also talked trash to Tom Brady after Brady lit him up for nearly 400 yards. Sherman, you haven’t done jack yet to warrant all the garbage you spew. Slink back into irrelevance, tool.

  8. Sherman is one of the best corners in the league right now. WRs have always been considered divas, so it’s fun to listen to corners respond via trash talk. His “You mad bro” meme for Brady was funny too.

I liked the fact that he gives respect too by not trash talking to guys like Fitgerald and Megatron, but rather letting his play do the talking for him.

Kid plays with a chip on his shoulder. He’s gonna be good for a long time.

  9. This dude talks a lot for sure. But I love it! Its good banter and he more often than not backs it up on the field. Its also good bait. At the end of the day, if the Hawks’ win the game, anything said becomes worth it.

How fun have these hawks become in 1 yr!

  10. what about Brandon Marshall, was he an easy matchup for you?? so tired of this guy running his mouth all the time….is he good? of course, but he is just over the top on his thoughts on himself.

  11. You can’t spell Sherman without M-E. I guess that means you don’t think much of your teammates. I would have thought a Stanford guy would be more intelligent.

  12. Sherman continues to break his own record for douchiest clown in the NFL.

There are reasons to pull for the Seahawks, mainly due to underdog factor – but Sherman is not one of them.

  13. sherman is a gifted cover guy, and can certainly back up his words, but the “one catch” roddy white had on him was a 50 something yard td over the top where he got torched

  14. Pass Interference in the league these is a a joke –on BOTH sides of the ball, but what Sherman gets away with is borderline mugging.

Officials are either too intimidated to call it, or just resent their calls getting reviewed/reversed to bother with it.

  15. Good example of screwed-up priorities. Your team lost to the Falcons but all you have to say is brag that you won your personal battle with an opposing player?
Some say your trash-talk doesn’t matter because you are a good player, but several other good players never won anything because of their attitude and disrespect for everything. To me Sherman is the equivalent of Terrell Owens. Great talent, small person. Would probably prefer being inducted in the Football Hall of Fame than winning a Super Bowl where he didn’t play well.

  16. last i checked Matt Ryan and his boys were having a field day against that overated secondary. A mouth this idiot has. My history escapes me, but i think the Falcoms one that game, when with two passes Seattle was done.

  17. Actually he caught 5 passes that game and the one he caught on Sherman was a td, am I right? Also correct me if I’m wrong but Atlanta won that game? Listen Dick….. uhhhh Richard, you’ve been in Seattle a couple years, you’ll get used to disappointment. You have a run option QB which means you’ve just had your best year as a team so get used to the disappointment. You will have a good support group in the Redskins and 49ers. You can set up the meetings and deal with it all together. Stay away from interviews Dick it’ll make it easier.

  18. The only reason the Falcons “won” that game was because it was played at 10 AM Seattle time and the Seahawks sleepwalked through the 1st half. Next year the soft, weak Falcons won’t even make the playoffs.

  19. Anyone else getting the feeling the Seahawks are going to end up being that team that rises up from nowhere for one year before quickly fading back into obscurity? Like the Lions last season, the Chefs the season before and the list goes on and on.

  20. @breastfedted LOL are you kidding me? Brady had ZERO complete passes on Sherm, all of those yards came from Wes Welker on Marcus Trufant (mismatch). I’m pretty sure Sherm had a pick that game too

  21. Sherman is a good player but needs to shut up. He kept talking trash to JJones after Jones ran right by him for a TD. Talked trash to Brady when the Pats lit it up for 425 yds(Seattle did win the game, but cause of the Pats D, not theirs). Maybe he should trash talk if he passes his next urine test.

    ——————

And the only reason the Hawks were in the playoffs were because of the games the Refs handed them in Seattle, so what’s your point?

  23. I love Sherman…but come on man! His one catch against you was a 47 yard touchdown. That’s nothing to boast about. How can you say the guy is “easy” when you got burnt for a long TD.

  24. Probably shouldn’t be running his mouth after his team did lose the game…but us gotta give the guy some credit. He’s a hell of a talent and the Hawks defense is no joke. They’re young and will be good for years…and will have some great rivalry games with my Niners. But isn’t that why we love this game??!!??

  25. Easy to talk trash when you were hopped up on PED’s all season.

Let’s see a season with out roids, then you can talk trash. Until then you look like an ass.

  26. There are so many haters out there! Sherm is arguably the best corner in the league. Yeah he talks but he backs it up and its fantastic as a hawks fan! He made all pro this yr. There are only 2 players that get that title for the position. He was 1 of them. So sit back & enjoy the greatness!!

There sure is a lot of yapping from Seacrap fans. For a franchise that’s been moribund for most of it’s history, there are a lot of trash talkers.
    I mean if it’s the Cowpoke fans….

  28. Falcons slipping back to obscurity? Funny.

Unless your team is the ravens or 49ers, no other team got closer to the Super Bowl. Tony G is coming back and the falcons will earn the credit they deserve in Julio’s true breakout season.

  29. Love people using the stupid start time excuse for the seahawks first half. Are u really that stupid that you believe that? Do you think the flew in gameday. Wow people will use any excuse

  30. He’s the loudest As*hole in the league. I don’t even care about the falcons. Shut your mouth and play the game. I wish someone would knock this guy out!

  31. I just refreshed my memory dude got toasted for almost a 50 yard bomb lmao, and Gonzalez was having his way all over the field, i wont even mention JJ. Look here i am not a Falcons fan, not by any stretch but this always reminds me of when i play soccer and bball, i tell the guys attempting to guard me or defend against me that i will score in bunches both soccer and bball and there is nothing you can do about it. However, some guys i play against simply cant accept that reality. Being Delusional is a disease. Sherman u got burned and the sooner you accept that buddy the better.

  32. hey douche bag Sherman the only reason you played the falcons is because you could barely beat a team that had a one legged QB. The week before.

  33. Classic case of: you love him if he’s on your team, enjoy his talking if he’s not playing against you and absolutely hate him if he’s lined up on the other side of your team. Personally I’ll enjoy hearing him talk trash all offseason as much as I’ll enjoy seeing him get “Trent Williams’d” again next year.

  34. A bit of Hyperbole from Sherman, just re-watched every play White was targeted when in Sherman’s primary coverage responsibility… the results:

5 targets: 4 wins for white 1 win for Sherman… maybe Richard should watch more tape?

1Q – 3-2 SEA 42 (11:40) 13 yd reception – White easily gets separation on Sherman on a comeback route, despite Sherman holding him before White even came out of his break
1Q – 3-3 SEA 21 (9:50) incomplete in the end zone – but White was in Sherman’s coverage, smoked him on the route, if Matt throws on time its an easy 21 yd TD
1Q – 1-10 SEA 48 (5:30) Incomplete to White on a deep ball – Sherman runs stride for stride with him, breaks it up well… if it was under thrown a little White might have had a chance but great play from Sherman.
2Q – 1-10 SEA 47 (4:23) White 47 yd TD – Safety bit on the fake leaving Sherman without help, but white was the only receiver anywhere near Sherman, and Roddy ran right by him with ease
4Q – 1-10 ATL 24 (9:07) Incomplete 20+ yds downfield – White beats Sherman in man coverage on a crossing route for what would have been 20+ gain, Matt overthrows him

  35. The 49ers DB’s said the same thing going into the NFCCG. They worried about Julio and #88. In fact Chris Culliver was quoted as saying “Roddy White does not get out of his breaks very well”.

  36. Trent Williams thinks Richard Sherman is an easy matchup and is ready to go one on one when Sherman wants to…

    ——–
With that defense? No. The Seahawks are just really scratching the surface. With a strong d and competent offense it’s hard for teams to regress. Plus the Seahawks coaching staff really is great at making second half adjustments.

  38. I think it’s great how many blog post this story has already dude is a pure lockdown n will only get better. Only 1 1/2 yrs in the NFL but he keep living over expectations wait til next yr. n say Wat u will bout watever player u want doing watever n besides Marshall every wideout that he lined up against had subpar performances n as far as crabby patty n moss goes they had there coach call the referee committee cuz his receivers got shut down even in the game they won n he told every1 once he came to the league his obligation was to destroy it n since he’s been a starter he’s done exactly what he said he will. Dude was juicin.. CRABTREE WILL KILL HIS a**…. Easy

Crabtree never has and never will own Sherman. Of course Sherman’s mouthy, no denying that. Dude can ball though. Oh and btw, that was blown coverage on the safety, Chancellor, not Sherman. he saw Kam was out of position and tried to cover up the mistake

and im sure trent will keep his helmet on

  42. Sherman iz a BEAST!! Like him or not he backs up his mouth with his play!! He took a haymaker Frm Trent will and didn’t retaliate, he a good kid who loves to play DEFENCE !!…

P.s. just saw someone comment that Crabtree would toast Sherman…now that’s funny!

  43. Sherman is the best cover corner in the league. For all of you hating on this seattle team beware!!! They are way better then you think and soon very soon all of you hating clowns will have no choice but to reckonize true talent!!! I personally love sherm and no matter what ANY of you say if you watch football you see what’s happening in SEATTLE!!! Can’t wait to see all of you next year!!!

    GO HAWKS!!!

  44. schweb08 says: Feb 14, 2013 6:23 PM

Yea that catch was a deep touchdown idiot, Couldn’t cover without his juice!
    ————

The throw isn’t made if Chancellor doesn’t bite. Try again.

  45. Richard Sherman is a beast! Pure, in ur face, talkin smack the whole time beast of a shut down corner. Be affraid NFL, be very affraid.

To all the haters, everything negative comin outta ur mouths doesnt phase him. He uses it and then abuses the opposition.

  46. Same loudmouth that called AJ Green “average”. Let’s see how he does next year now that the league will be watching him closely for PEDs.
What player has EVER been as good once they have been caught? None! He will fade away like the rest of the cheaters.

  47. I love Sherman too. This is FOOTBALL, not golf. People tackling each other, giving each other concussions and other terrible injuries, blood and sweat clashing and then people expect it to be friendly and PC.

Please. I like a guy like Sherman that speaks his mind on his opponents and competes at the same time. That being said if I was one of the many corners that couldn’t cover Roddy White, I’d be training really hard right about due to another guy calling him easy and then backing it up.

  48. Not sure I remember how many times he covered White, but I am sure he covered White on his TD and looked foolish doing so.

  49. bospat says: Feb 14, 2013 10:45 PM

Such a putz..let your play do the talking..karma is a bitch!
    —————-

Your prerogative. There is no “right” way to conduct one’s self. If he prefers to be outspoken, then so be it. If he wants to be politically correct, smug and give disingenuous answers to the media while being the complete opposite (I am hoping you are smart to see where I am going with this), then he can do that as well.

  50. Freddie Mitchell come to mind everytime this guy speaks to the press. Anyone remember Freddie Michell? yeah… and if he didn’t say the outlandish things he said NO one would. I think this Sherman guy figured the same thing.

  51. A guy like Sherman is a colourful addition with the whole show he puts on in the otherwise kind of dry and formal/routine NFL. His stats are great on a good defensive scheme that suits his strengths. An outspoken person he puts his reputation out there to loved or hated and he invokes plenty of both. A man with style that isn’t afraid to speak his mind is hardly unintelligent, quite the opposite actually. As long as he keeps backing it up. It’s the Sherman show and as long as its not a distraction to the team as a whole I think the Seahawks will let it continue.

  52. He’s scared of Julio so he’s calling out Roddy to make sure he gets to cover him. I cant blame him, Julio is a GOD!!

  53. It’s called getting in peoples head people…. and for those of you saying PED’s are why he was so good, that test came in early september so do your research. I’ll take Sherman on my team over ANY cover corner in football

  54. This article left out some context about what led Sherman to make these comments on his ESPN appearance. They played him a clip from a Roddy White interview a few weeks back (in which White spoke about his interaction with Sherman on-field) then asked Sherman to respond to it. Here’s the quote:

Roddy White: “He’s a little bit of a talker, and I just needed him to be quiet for a quarter or two. For two and a half quarters he didn’t want to talk. When they started getting back in the game he wanted to start talking and I said, ‘Hey, don’t worry, you’re gonna leave here with that “L”. It’s a long flight back too. Five hours, enjoy it!'”

So the trash talk is coming both ways. Even if ESPN is instigating it. They each come across to me as super competitive guys having some fun getting each other (and their fan bases) riled up. It’s got me especially pumped for the ATL vs SEA matchup next season, so I welcome the smack talk and want more of it. 🙂 Just don’t like it when articles leave out information to make the story fit a particular narrative.

  55. Typical whining from the loser’s locker room….guess beating the rap on his drug test on a technicality makes him think people will forget how White scorched him for a long TD…and more importantly, how Sherman and his teammates choked up the lead with less than 30 seconds left….

Beat somebody without a crippled QB in the playoffs before mouthing off….

  56. I think he lost White on that TD play because he had stopped to take some of his PED’s! What a loudmouthed cheat Sherman is….and he will get his someday.

  57. monkeyhateclean says: Feb 14, 2013 6:37 PM

Pass Interference in the league these is a a joke –on BOTH sides of the ball, but what Sherman gets away with is borderline mugging.

Officials are either too intimidated to call it, or just resent their calls getting reviewed/reversed to bother with it.

    ——————————————–
People that claim they watch games but really repeat ESPN or what other people say. Sherman likes to play off coverage more than he presses {which he is great at} He does so to bait QB’s to throw the ball his way. So all this “mugging” you’re talking about has zero substance. Browner is in press often- he can be beat a little more. Sherman lead league passes defensed & 2nd ints. He backs up his talk without question.

  58. Why don’t people appreciate trash talking anymore? It’s so sad. The NFL is succeeding into turning the game into a girls league and are slowly but surely getting the fans to go along with it. Trash talking creates fun rivalries and makes games much more intense. NBA is the same way now. No more trash talking and it’s sad.

  59. Sherman is the Muhammad Ali of cornerbacks he gets into most wideouts heads and takes them out of their game he frustrates the hell out of them. The guy backs up the talk with his aggressive play all you posers complaining about him would love him on your team he’s better than anyone on the disco chickens roster The Ice in matty’s glass always melts in January. Matty fumbled the snap in the Niners game plus threw a pick to seal the deal and blew the season the guy is what you thought he was a statistic qb not a winner

  60. Julio Jones Did NOTHIN against the Seahawks so let’s correct that now. Also Julio had 1 catch on a slow go play action not really a trick play but just tricked Sherman AND the strong safety.

Also which idiot still believes the GB game is what got the Seahawks into the playoffs?????

You loose all credibility when you speak BS like that. Seriously they would have been the 5 seed NO MATTER WHAT. They beat both the Bears and the vikings so please get informed before you say stupid sh*t thank you!

Sherman needs to hush though and this is from a Hawks fan. HE gets tricked into saying stuff all the time by the media because he speaks too openly.

  61. I’ll give Busta Rhymes credit where it’s due..lol, he’s a good physical corner with good cover skills, but bragging is what get you burned, now its a goal for receivers to burn him. I remember Revis with Revis island . Revis didn’t talk much , but the press took the whole revis island thing to another level,I remember that making Stevie Johnson Motivated and he partied on that island all day. Seahawks also have some decent safeties that make the CB position a little easier.

  62. Two things here. 1 you got burnt on a long TD pass while you were laying on the ground because of the route. 2 there was at least one other time I can think of you covering white off the top of my head. The sideline route at the beginning of the game for like 15-20. There’s 65 of his yards. And again you looked stupid from the route.

  63. Richard Sherman is a good CB. There’s no question about it. However, he simply needs to shut his trap. Roddy White is one of the best WRs in the league. If he’s such an easy match up then cover him the entire game and see what happens. How many times did Sherman cover him that game?

By the way, who won the game, Richard? Seems to me Richard’s a “me” guy and not a “team” guy.

  64. He lost the game. He’s a loser. Who cares about how many catches White had. It was obviously too many for Seattle. As Belichick said… “Stats are for losers, the final score is for winners”.

  65. “Pass Interference in the league these is a a joke –on BOTH sides of the ball, but what Sherman gets away with is borderline mugging.

Officials are either too intimidated to call it, or just resent their calls getting reviewed/reversed to bother with it”

You obviously don’t watch the Seahawks that much and just follow what the media/analysts tell as “fact”. Richard actually very rarely “mugs” guys he usually plays off on them to bait the quarterback into throwing the ball his way. Know what you are talking about before you make yourself sound like an ignorant fool. Watch out for the Seahawks next season. Go Hawks!

  66. goldrush36 says:

Well I guess the rams are lucky. Titus Young had a career game against Sherman

Did you watch that game? Sherman covered Megatron! Titus young had a career game against an aging Marcus Trufant! You idiots that don’t actually watch the Seahawks sound ignorant as hell, when you try to discuss them. Do me a favor go watch the tape and then tell me how Titus young burned him. Moron. GoHawks

  67. This guy isn’t even that good. He wouldn’t be noticed at all if it weren’t for his mouth.

Guess it’s a good marketing strategy.

  68. No, the congratulations need to go to you, Richard. You’re the rarest of the rare; a sore winner. It’s just ironic that you’ve never won a damn thing but run your mouth like you’ve actually accomplished something.
As it is, just keep loading up on those PED’s and maybe that day will come.
    I’ll take the under.

  69. I disagree with trash talking is fun in the NFL. It’s annoying. It’s not boxing match. It’s a team sport. Richard Sherman is a good player but definitely not the best. Take a look at his stats and see who he intercepted. Tom Brady is the only great qb who he picked off. Tom Brady shredded that secondary for 400 yards. They won the game but if you are gonna look at that game the way Sherman does then Brady won the individual match up. No where are there comments about what Cutler and Marshall did to Seattles cornerbacks. Most receivers and quarterbacks are intimidated by their size. That’s all they got going for themselves. I guarantee their names will fade away soon. His trash talking is just to get himself on tv. My opinion Sherman is no where near he best and will never be. Charles Tillman is one of the best corner backs in the league and he gets no credit at all. The best thing about Tillman is that he don’t care if he gets noticed. He knows who he is and he knows he can play his position. Tired of hearing his mouth. Just play football and you will get respect. Respect will get you further than being a clown

  70. I want to see football like it was in the past. To me it seems like most nfl players are just looking for the publicity and individual awards. You wont succeed if you don’t have confidence in yourself. You play the game to be the best but to say you are the best in your first couple years is hilarious. Think about all the great nfl players before you. Wreak havoc consistently throughout your career before you consider yourself as one of the best. Until then muzzle it up. #1 bears fan right here!

  71. I don’t think the previous seahawks fan knows football or watches the games himself. I’m a bears fan but I know football. Bears are a older defense and they just couldn’t execute. The bears need a better o line and another receiver to complement Marshall. They did not get out coached. Failed execution by the players was the reason for our loss. The seahawks got a really good defensive front 7. The pressure they put on the qb is the reason the secondary was able to make plays throughout the season. When a qb just flings the ball in the air its easy for the db’s to make a play. By experienced and good quarterbacks the secondary will get burned and it’s been proven. Example; tom Brady. Ur a good db when you make disruptions yourself. When someone causes the disruption for you and you take advantage of their good play is called luck. Being in the right spot at the right time

  72. Trash talking only creates blogs and gets you noticed. Playing football is what makes the NFL the greatest sport. There is a difference in being an athlete and being an all around football player. I want to see broken tackles, hard hits and defenses shutting down the opponent. That’s what makes the NFL. Scoring a touchdown without being touched just makes you athletic

  73. Does this loser have the shortest memory ever? Do you idiots remember the time Roddy burned him in a playoff game? The Falcons won, in large part, because of his inability to shut down Roddy.

He talked about Roddy being hidden in the formation? Welcome to football. Thats how the game is played!

Oh, and should we even mention Julio’s number in that game? He’s not shutting the Falcons down. No one is!

  74. Stanford must not teach math, If Dick makes that play Seattle outscores Atlanta and WINS the game. His new knick name should be “Easy Day”
Richard (easy day) Sheman the turd

  75. blah blah blah, im surprised it took this long for sherman to run his mouth.

Can say he got 1 catch on him all day long if it makes u sleep at night but what happened with that 1 catch?………dont worry ill wait

  76. Love me some Sherman, he’s our New Gary Payton. All of you people from other cities, I am not going to chide you, as you don’t see him every week. Roddy white caught one ball on him, and he gave him a golf clap. He’s a Stanford educated guy with a chip on his shoulder. He talks because he can back it up physically, and mentally.

  77. Too bad his feet aren’t as fast or his hands as big as his mouth. The FACT here is White burned him for a TD and his team lost, but this is what we get to read when you have a me first guy who isn’t about team. He wouldn’t even be a starter in Chicago, NY or San Fran.

  78. Richard Sherman is an idiot who has basically trashed every player in the NFL other than himself. Here’s a summary of Richard Sherman’s vaunted “trash talk”: “everyone sucks, and I’m the best.”

There’s nothing clever or selective about any of it; it’s just blathering, posturing nonsense. A real trash talker picks his spots instead of emulating 50 Cent. That’s who he’s become–the 50 Cent of the NFL. Overkill.
