Steelers can help ensure Ravens will carry huge cap number for Flacco

Joe Flacco, Ben Roethlisberger AP

We’ve established over the last two weeks that the Ravens may have to use the exclusive franchise tag on quarterback Joe Flacco, and that to do so would require the Ravens to set aside, under current calculations, $20.464 million in cap space.

And while the Ravens will be required to shoulder only the non-exclusive number of $14.6 million (or thereabouts) through April 19 when the top five quarterback cap numbers for 2013 are officially determined, the numbers that apply as of April 19 become locked in the moment the Ravens use the tag.

Per a source with intimate knowledge of the rules that apply, the five highest 2013 cap numbers at the quarterback position become fixed, for Flacco’s purposes, as soon as the Ravens apply the franchise tag to Flacco.  And so, if the Ravens do it on Monday, when the window for applying the tag opens, they’ll eventually be strapped with the full $20.464 million.

That’s why it makes sense for the Ravens to wait until the last possible day to apply the franchise tag, if they plan to use the exclusive version.   This will ensure that any new quarterback contracts with lower cap numbers could drive the average down from $20.464 million.

And it also makes sense for one of quarterbacks with one of the five highest cap numbers in 2013 — Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger — to wait until after the March 4 deadline for use of the tag to restructure or extend his contract in a way that drops his cap number below $19.6 million.  By waiting, the Steelers and Roethlisberger will be sticking the Ravens with a higher cap number.

The other top-five cap numbers for 2013 are:  $21.55 million for Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, $20.82 million for Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, $20.35 million for Giants quarterback Eli Manning, and $20 million for Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning.  None of those teams or players have any obvious incentive to help the Ravens out by doing a deal before March 4.

But here’s where it gets interesting.  Three of the quarterbacks are represented by CAA, and CAA also represents Ravens receiver Anquan Boldin.  So if Stafford or either of the Mannings will be doing a new deal anyway, doing it before March 4 could result in more cap space that could be used to keep Boldin, who has a base salary of $6 million for 2013.

Who cares. Steelers are in the cesspool. 8-8 record a year after being Tebowd. No one thinks they are going to be competitive with Colbert balancing the checkbook

Thank god they are only in the cesspool and not in Baltimore.
I would take Colberts three SB appearances over you one and a couple of tee shirts skippy.

Lets not forget that the purple Browns (a.k.a. The Ravens) are the same franchise stolen from Cleveland and have been in existence a very long time. During that time span, the purple Browns have had 2 total SB appearances, winning 2 and the Steelers have had 8 SB appearances, winning SIX! Nice try purpleBrown-ator.

So Steeler fans rather have a 40 yr old QB win a regular season game vs the Ravens than win the Super Bowl. Such lofty goals for such a pathetic team. Your comments are so amusing. At the end of the day I know you wish your team won the Super Bowl let alone get in the playoffs but they didn’t. Cheers! Mediocrity awaits you again. Enjoy!

  21. ravenator says: Feb 15, 2013 3:48 PM

  34. gacoltfan says: Feb 15, 2013 4:08 PM

As an impartial 3rd party, I will help with the Steelers/Ravens debate. Both have 2 SB’s since 2000, Ravens have the most recent one. Steelers have also been to another. Ravens led by an alleged murderer, Steelers by an alleged rapist.

My verdict is it’s a push.

  35. blackngoldimmortals says: Feb 15, 2013 4:09 PM

So your 2-0. Pittsburgh went 4-0 before losing one. And last time I checked It’s better 6-2 than 2-0! And where I would love to see Pittsburgh in the SB every year, I also take pride in watching the steelers beat the ratbirds any time. You Guys got lucky this year so don’t get used to it, you won’t have the same success the steelers have had. And yea going to a super bowl but losing is still better than getting beat by your division rivals in the post season……AGAIN!! How many times have the ravens beat the steelers in the post season?

  36. enoughofthatalready says: Feb 15, 2013 4:30 PM

Where is the debate over this year? The Steelers did not make the playoffs and the Ravens won the Super Bowl. If the Steelers did not lose 6 games in which they led in the 4th Quarter, it would have been the Steelers winning the Super Bowl, maybe.

Where is the debate over history? The Steelers are 23-15 against the Ravens all-time and 3-0 in the playoffs.

  37. enoughofthatalready says: Feb 15, 2013 4:34 PM

Ravens are and always will be the little brother to the Steelers. They were built to mimic the Steelers in defense and intensity. The funny thing about this rivalry is the fact that the Bengals will win the AFC North next year………and I am a Steelers fan.

Talking about Super Bowls is a ridiculous conversation when talking salary cap numbers. This is the part of the season where the business end conquers over brawn. None of the QB’s listed above are making a move in restructuring their QB’s before March 4th. In reality the Steelers, Patriots, Lions (LOL), Giants (GoGiants), and Broncos are putting the Ravens behind the 8 ball. BRILLIANT!

This is a really stupid article. Do you actually believe that the Steelers’ front office is going to wait to restructure Roethlisberger’s contract so that the Ravens will have to use a higher cap number for Flacco? Steelers and Ravens both have a cap issue this year, big time. It goes way beyond Roethlisberger and Flacco.

  42. raiderapologist says: Feb 15, 2013 4:38 PM

The only thing that really stands out in that story-aside from the inept smack talk between Raven and Steeler fans-is the amount of money Stafford is pulling in.

  43. thebrownswillalwaysloose says: Feb 15, 2013 4:42 PM

  44. enoughofthatalready says: Feb 15, 2013 4:44 PM

I think that Boldin, Smith and Jones deserve some of that $ that Flacco is going to get. Without those guys making ridiculous catches in the Super Bowl, Flacco would have been sent home after the Denver game. I personally have never seen a group of receivers make such dynamic and impossible catches over a 3-game period in the 30 plus years that I have been watching football. Boldin and Jones should have been co-MVPs of the Super Bowl.

  45. truetrue85 says: Feb 15, 2013 4:46 PM

I’m not even a Steelers fan but when it comes to Baltimore and Pittsburgh fighting over super bowls… 6-2. Not to mention given the Ravens’ track record against the Steelers in the playoffs, y’all only got there because you didn’t have to get through the Steelers in the playoffs.

  46. ppdoc13 says: Feb 15, 2013 4:47 PM

Hey fooleydrooley – you really can’t count can you. You have made this mistake numerous times. The Baltimore Ravens own 2 Lombardi’s. The first was in 2000 and the second was in 2012. You must be forgetting about the SB where we pimpslapped the Giants.

But as important is the fact that the City of Baltimore is the City of Football Champions. Yes, you know the numbers because I have told them to you on more than one occasion, so let’s go over it again for old time sake.

    Baltimore Colts (RIP) 58, 59, 70
    Baltimore Ravens 2000, 2012
Baltimore Stallions 83rd Gray Cup 1995 (hey smarta$$ drool do you realize that the Gray Cup has been around longer than the SB?)
    Baltimore Stars (USFL) 1984, 1985

That makes 8 titles across 3 leagues over 55 years. You on the other hand have 6 NFL championships over 80 years, the first 40 of which were total futility.

Last time I checked drooley 8 > 6 and always will be. So pipe down child. You elders have put you in your place.

Mediocrity? Hmm…20 Division Championships, 26 playoff berths, 8 AFC Titles, 6 Super Bowl Championships……all in a 40 year span…oh that is so mediocre.

  48. neepo13 says: Feb 15, 2013 4:48 PM

You folks are really stretching this Flacco contract storyline. The Steelers have their own stuff to deal with. The last thing they are worried about is sticking it to the Ravens. And even if Jen’s cap number is lowered it won’t make much difference anyway. I am sure Brees, Bradford, Rivers or some other QB’s cap number is right in that same neighborhood. Doing Jen’s deal over will just move one of those other guys to the top 5.

  49. ironman721 says: Feb 15, 2013 4:50 PM

20 Division Championships, 27 Playoff Berths, 15 AFC Championship Appearances, 8 AFC Titles, 6 Super Bowl Titles….all in a 40 year span…so very mediocre.

Baltimore Ravens: 2 NFL championships in 17 seasons 1 per every 8.5 years

Baltimore Colts and Ravens football: 5 NFL championships in 47 years 1 championship per every 9.5 seasons

    Winner Baltimore end of argument!

no rewrite of history here at all. The Steel City franchise has 6 titles in 80 plus years.

Baltimore Franchises have 8 in 55 years.

    Math is math drooley.

Baltimore has more titles than Pittsburgh. Plain and simple.

I will give you this. Since the creation of the SB in 1967 after the merger, the Steelers have 5 SB wins, 4 of which were in the 70′s. They have one SB loss and 1 refs decision.

    Have a nice weekend drooley

    ravenator

Dude, the Ravens were an 8-8 team that caught a Steelers team without their QB and lucked out on a 4th and 26 play.

Then they lucked out on a deep pass to Jacoby Jones that was actually underthrown in Denver (not to mention the pick six earlier in the game that should have been pass interference–common theme for the ratbirds).

Then the officials failed to call the 6 penalties in the final 2 minutes against the Ravens in the Super Bowl-P.I. on second down, defensive holding/P.I on 4th down, and then 4 holding penalites on the fake punt (obviously, they wouldn’t have all be assessed, but 4 lineman were clearly holding on that play…it allowed the Ravens to tick an extra 5 seconds off of the clock, taking away San Fran’s chance for one last play to the end zone).

  62. steelcurtainn says: Feb 15, 2013 6:55 PM

Nobody counts championships only Superbowls unless your ancient old…lol…that gave me a good laugh…Superbowls are what counts….and the Steelers got 6 wins(top of the mountain) more then any other team across the board. Get over it. The browns still have their team and their records… As bad as it is… And seriously dude are you from NE? Cold, horrible accents and everyone is angry all the time… Baltimore is paradise in comparison. Super Bowl Champs! Say it with me people… The Ravens are World Champs. Did you hear it??? World Champs! The arguing between “fans” is ridiculous. The Steelers and Ravens are both two of the best organizations in the NFL and consistently produce solid teams. Comparing the historical stats is insane as the two teams haven’t been around for the same period of time. In the modern era these are two of the best, most consistent franchises in the league. In the years that the Steelers win the Super Bowl the Ravens fans have to keep their mouths shut, take it, and move on to next year. This year the Steelers have to do the same. Saying anything other than “Nice win this year. We hope to get you next year” shows poor sportsmanship and immaturity. Neither team needs to defend their success or have childish arguments. For the past few years Baltimore has been the better team. Eventually that will probably swing back the other way. Be man enough to appreciate someone else’s success and use it as motivation to get back on top!

  76. jarvis1104 says: Feb 16, 2013 2:28 PM

Steeeler fans bringing up the past to take the pain of the present away hahahah so desperat

12 17 The only pain most steeler fans have is in their side from laughing at your childish posts. Also what is desperat?

I am sure Flaccid’s cap number is not something the steelers are worried about with the major issues we have in front of us. Sounds good but not real.

Oh near the ocean and mountains like…. Maryland???? Haha nofooldrool you need a geography lesson. You also need a few lessons in general. Perhaps a reading lesson and then you’ll be able to determine that ray Lewis isn’t the demon you think or have been influenced to believe he is. But seriously, Baltimore has some bad neighborhoods yeah but this area is 100% more deesireable than new England lol. But it’s cool I don’t take you seriously any way. You’re obviously one of those people that are from nowhere and jumped on a bandwagon. Much like the Steeler fan from Virginia or something. Here in bmore md we love our Os and ravens and oh yeah we’re world champs! Sleep tight!

@foolwhodrools – where are our morals and ethics. It’s called repentance and forgiveness. You might want to look it up. It comes in a 5 volume set that most of the US refers to as the 5 books of Moses or the Old Testament.

Ray Lewis in obstructing justice did a bad thing. He has worked for the last dozen or so years at repentance. He made monetary donations which is actually required by the Oral Torah. He publicly apologized. He has sinned no more (at least in that arena). He has done all of the requirements that G-d asks of us after sinning. If you can not forgive him his transgression, then the problem is your, not his.

Yes steeler fans bring up the past to take away the pain of the present. 8-8 record, miseed playoffs, tebowd last year need I say more. Ok well I will, in the last two years ravens have 5 playoff wins and a Super Bowl, steelers have ZERO wins. Enjoy mediocrity losers.

  81. Nofoolnodrool says: Feb 17, 2013 2:23 PM

Our team may have lost, but are not lost like you . Stating the obvious over and over. We know you can type ….jury is out on your ability to think. Go collect money for the slasher statue.

Ravenator your unbelievable bias is straight hilarious. Congrats you won, not like the league/espn didn’t have a hard on for the “let ray go out on top” campaign lol. Have fun being targeted every week now by every opponent next year. No more walkthroughs. We’ve been at the top of afc for the past decade in the 2000s have been steelers/pats no question about it. Welcome to the club for the time being, I think your gonna miss ray alot more than you believe. Good luck, youre gonna need it. Esp after you deplete youre entire organization by paying flacco like manning. All he can do is check down to rice or chuck it deep and pray for the flag lol. Relish this one, gonna be years before you smell another

do you actually watch football…because if you did you would know that flacco is a qb who can make any throw there is. and in todays nfl chucking it deep and looking for a flag is actually pretty smart. but almost every analyst looks at the 3rd and 13 to pitta against denver and the checkoff back should throw to boldin in the sb as two of the finest passes flacco has made. and what is wrong with throwing the ball to a spot where only your receiver can make a play. thats what the great ones do

  84. scoobies05 says: Feb 17, 2013 4:52 PM

do you even watch football? because if you did you would see what everyone else sees…a qb who can make any throw. check down to rice? he is our best weapon. throw it deep and hope for a flag? pretty smart in today’s nfl. but if you paid attention the two throws that most experts point to for flacco’s arm are the 3rd and 13 to pitta against denver and the 4th and 1 back shoulder throw to boldin in the super bowl. and last a checked really good qbs are able to put the ball in spots where only their receivers can get it. and of course when ben does it its because he is great, right?

Ok i am a Steelers fan.where in godsname did the ravens fans and steeler fans turn this article into a super bowl debate? Thiz is about salary cap.which at this time both teams are in deep on.who will come out of the cap issues in a better position? Honestly the Steelers will.and to the person crapping on colbert? I got news for you…he doesnt negotiate the players contracts.khan does and he is the best inthe nfl at it.thats why the Steelers will always be considered contenders.if the fail to make playoffs this coming season.look for Colbert to vevgone and khan to be next GM.zee this pozt was about the article.stick to the topic and grow up

Pittsburgh Steelers: 6 NFL championships in 80 years: one championship per every 13.2 seasons

Baltimore Ravens: 2 NFL championships in 17 seasons 1 per every 8.5 years

Baltimore Colts and Ravens football: 5 NFL championships in 47 years 1 championship per every 9.5 seasons

    Winner Baltimore end of argument!
    —————————————————-
Wait…your math is off by 3 years. Better check that.

    Baltimore Colts: 1947 – 1950 (3 Seasons)
    Baltimore Colts: 1953 – 1983 (30 Seasons)
    Baltimore Ravens: 1996 – Current (17 Seasons)
    3 + 30 + 17 = 50

How about the Ravens fan bringing up a Grey cup win and the USFL to try to feel better about themselves hahaha. Ravens fans are so pathetic.

  88. ppdoc13 says: Feb 18, 2013 12:31 AM

The Gray cup was brought up by me because it is a professional league and team. Are they the quality of the NFL? No. But the USFL had some outstanding players who went onto great NFL careers. Warren moon of the cfl had a forest NFL career. It has nothing to do about feeling good about ourselves. The facts are the facts. The city of bmore is home to the championships of three different professional leagues. Pittsburgh has multiple championships, but only in the NFL. That is the truth.

If you don’t like the truth, that is your issue

  89. halusbr33 says: Feb 19, 2013 8:52 PM

    @ppdoc13

I wasn’t knocking the GREY Cup in my other post, if that is what you are referring to. Its significance is noted.

That said, the USFL Title is a bit suspect for Baltimore. The Stars of the USFL, were known as the Philadelphia Stars when they acquired the second title in the league, in 1984 (home games played at the Vet and Franklin Field). The title in 1985 was won as the Baltimore Stars, however they played home games at Byrd Stadium, and their headquarters remained at the Franklin Field offices in Philadelphia.

Not diminishing the title of 1985 in Baltimore, however it was barely noticed in Charm City. There were some good players and coaches in that league and within that Stars team, but Baltimore did not really take to the team and by the time they started, the league folded.
