Lost in the fact that Commissioner Roger Goodell’s compensation skyrocketed from $11.6 million in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011 to nearly $30 million over the next 12 months is the reality that NFL Network boss Steve Bornstein took a major haircut.
According to Daniel Kaplan of SportsBusiness Journal, Bornstein made only (only?) $5.7 million in the 2011 fiscal year. While not shabby under any sense of the term, Bornstein had made $12.2 million in the prior 12-month period.
So Bornstein went from making more than Goodell to making less less than 20 percent of Goodell’s total take.
It’s unclear why Bornstein’s pay dropped so dramatically. His eight-figure compensation previously was blamed on the realities of the market for high-end TV executives. Either that market changed, or the owners decided that Bornstein no longer fits within the “high-end” category.
