Former Giants defensive tackle Chris Canty has already visited with the Titans and the Chiefs, but the team he might like to play for hasn’t called yet.

Canty, who was a high school star in Charlotte, said he’d love to have a chance to play there again.

I might be willing to do the hometown discount,” Canty said with a laugh, when asked by WFNZ’s The Mac Attack about joining the Panthers. “We have to see what other opportunities are out there.”

Canty said that not long after he was released by the Giants, that Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis sent him a text saying “It’s time for you to come on home.”

Of course, that’s not the same as interest from Panthers GM Dave Gettleman, who knows Canty well from his days in the Giants personnel department.

While Canty might fit the Panthers from football and geographical means — and he insisted he thought they’d be competitive this year — that doesn’t mean he ends up there.

Since the Panthers are in subtract-before-they-add mode, they’re going to have to peel some parts off the roster before Gettleman can bring Canty or anyone else in.
