Manti Te’o has missed one day of workouts, for Katie Couric

As former Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o does his best to stay out of the media spotlight until the NFL draft, a couple of people who have been working out with him say the bizarre story of his fake dead girlfriend was only an issue for one day of his pre-Combine workouts.

Former Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert, who is working out with Te’o at the IMG Academy in Florida, says Te’o is committed to his pre-draft work.

Manti has been the same Manti I went to college with,’’ Eifert told ESPN.com. “He left to do the Katie Couric interview for one day and I think he was back that same night. He’s been out on the field working just like he’s always worked. I’ve tried to be there for him, but I don’t know that he’s needed all that much help because he’s such a strong person to begin with.’’

Chris Weinke, the former NFL quarterback who is now director of football operations at IMG Academy, offered the same assessment.

“He missed precisely one day,’’ Weinke said. “He’s gone about his business and been the same guy all along. I really admire that because a lot of guys his age would not be able to handle this as well as he has. I haven’t seen any signs of it being a distraction and I expect him to go up to Indianapolis and have a great Combine.’’

If Te’o does have a great Combine, it could go a long way toward convincing NFL teams that Te’o’s off-field distractions are behind him.

  1. Lets be honest, the only thing Te’o really did “wrong” here was be naive and get taken advantage of.

He didn’t hurt anyone, he wasn’t complicit in a coverup. A very sick person took advantage of him.

The guy seems like a good guy with a good attitude a good ethic and he loves football.

He is going to get his ass BUSTED for sure his whole rookie year, and the pranks will be bad, but that will be the worst of it.

  2. Hahaha you people are too much. I would loveeeee for him to fall to the Texans in the 1st round, but there’s most likely no way of that happening since NFL Owners are smart people, unlike you guys.

It’s not like he got caught using steroids or failed a drug test. It’s not like he was cheating in his classes or forged his SAT scores/had someone else take them. It’s not like he was receiving money illegally for playing or trading signed memorabilia for tattoo’s. It’s not like he got a DUI or got in a drunken fight. It’s not like killed anybody or even got arrested!

I don’t see how he can drop out of the top 15 in the draft. He is one heck of a LB. Pretty much Troy Polumalu at MLB. That’s pretty scary. I would love to see Houston draft him, but no way it happens. My 2 cents.

  3. If I were a GM, I would be happier if he said he was gay. I could accept that, but if’s he not and he is that naive, I’d have a lot more questions about drafting him.

  4. Manti Te’o has an invisible friend and its a huge deal. Tebow has one and its perfectly fine…

Yes… religion is exactly like publicizing the death of a girlfriend that doesn’t even exist. Yep, same thing.

  5. Leave the dude alone he’s still grieving. It is hard enough losing someone special, but having to do it alone is even harder.

  6. Those who think he did nothing wrong didnt hear him lying on all those interviews to gain sympathy during his Heisman capmaign. This spin doctoring to cover up just reeks of PR agents and handlers. He’s either gay, a pathological liar, and/or the , ost naive gullible person in the world. Either way it’s not looking good for him.

  7. I don’t know if Manti is going to be a great player. Love his hustle, but worried about the way he was blocked out against ‘bama.

That said, Tuiasasopo was the best thing to happen to The Daily Show since Cheney shot that dude in the face.

  8. Anyone else thinks he’s a puss for going on with Couric? I mean besides u Notre Damers wearing your rosé colored glasses.

On the biggest stage of his career to date, he was last seen getting faceplanted, pancaked, and completely run over by Alabama’s offensive line and running backs. It’s been established that he’s not strong enough, not fast enough, not quick enough, not tough enough, and either amazingly gullible, arrogant, self-promoting, self-centered, stupid, or a combination thereof.

And THIS you want as a leading part of your team’s defense?

  10. When he showed up for the interview, he was told that Katie couldn’t make it. She had been mauled by a Bear and needed treatment in Nigeria. While there, she learned that she has 2 days to live and needs you to wire her $1M US Dollars to survive.

So, she and Manti just conducted the interview on the phone–where they both fell gently to sleep……after he wired the money.

    What a guy.

  11. He lied for the publicity, he has failed the biggest of tests…. Character, add that to his crappy performance against Alabama, he is big and strong against weak ND opponents, comes up small against real competition, Draft Bust don’t waste the pick on him, let him be someone else’s mistake …. Hahahahaha
