With deep balls being thrown over his head and flags being through over the bodies of those he lays out, the Hawks play might not add up to the pay he desires. I hope they can figure something out quick because if a long term deal is not available, then drafting his replacement and bringing in Woodson or Reed for a year or two might be the best solution.

kjack, it’s not an issue of who they use the franchise tag, but whether they bother to use it all. Florio’s point is that franchising Goldson may mean that they are unable to trade Alex Smith, but are forced to cut him outright instead to conform to the Mar 12 salary cap deadline.

Of course, they may elect to create the necessary cap space by cutting some other players (Goodwin? Haralson?), but otherwise they don’t have enough cap room to franchise Goldson.
