Mara says Giants “probably” won’t use franchise tag

The Giants shed plenty of cap money in recent weeks.  But that money apparently won’t be burning a hole through their pockets via the franchise tag.

Co-owner John Mara tells Ian Rapoport of NFL Network that the Giants “probably” won’t use the tag this year.

Candidates for the tag include tackle Will Beatty, safety Kenny Phillips, and tight end Martellus Bennett.  If Beatty goes, other tackles will be plentiful via free agency or the draft.  Phillips has an extensive injury history.

Bennett is the most intriguing option for the tag.  When he didn’t get a big offer last season as a free agent from Dallas, he took a one-year deal in New York and had a career season.

Wait… Did they burn up all that extra cap money they stole from Washington and Dallas already? Guess it’s time to fine some other teams.

Not surprising is it? Everyone knows the Giants can squeeze a nickel harder than just about anyone.

I don’t see a career tag for any of the aforementioned players. Martellus is the only one slightly worthy and I believe the Giants saved his career. Hell he might pay them to come back. LOL.

Swinging door … wave bye bye. They can join the ranks of all the other free agents who changed teams.

I wouldn’t waste the tag on Bennett. There are a plethora of TEs in this year’s draft. Tyler Eifert would look good in a Giants Uni.

No one took any cap money from anyone. The Redskins and Cowboys tried to pay off some contracts early … and were simply told they couldn’t. That the money they paid out had to count against their caps … same as always … same for all teams. It’s not a fine or a penalty. This is how the cap works. Same rules for all teams.

But, he did say he plans on stealing another $15 million from Dallas and Washington before free agency starts to help the Giants retain their free agents

Mara is a liar and a cheat.

There isn’t anyone worth using the tag on, if someone wants to overpay for Bennett, Beatty or Phillips then let em.

Fearless Forecast – We’ll sign Tony Gonzalez around the 4th preseason game just about when he’ll be sick of sitting around in retirement. He wanted to be a Giant in his last days in KC but we couldn’t make it happen. He couldn’t put Atl over the top but he knows that he can get us there again.

None of the mentioned players are worth paying the franchise tag money on. If Phillips could ever stay healthy he would probably be paid like on of the top safeties.

Beatty has been solid but he seems to always have some type of nagging injury causing him to miss time.

As for Bennett, if he comes back that would be great but if not the Giants drafted the kid Robinson out of Cincy last year a project. See what the kid has and draft one.

Kenny Phillips is just about gone, guy was never the same after his knee injury, that and the emergence of their backup safeties Brown/Hill.

They’re going to keep that franchise tag handy in case they have a franchise quarterback some day.

Yeah because winning 2 SB’s and being named SB MVP twice isn’t worthy of being a franchise QB… Prolly a philly fan

Although I’m a Giant fan, I gave this comment a thumbs up simply because it made me chuckle. The only other poster who could have made me laugh harder is if a person named “thegreatsanchez” posted the same thing.

Think Mara will take the Redskins franchise tag away?

I think that winning 2 superbowls and being MVP of both and always having ratings in the 80s and 90s percentiles, makes Eli Manning an excellent franchise QB. Do some research. You may try some quantitative analysis.

dont understand any of the redskins and cowboys comments regarding us “taking” money from them….they tried to cheat the system by loading contracts for the uncapped season after the new cba after being warned by the NFL that doing so would result in being punished…the giants have nothing to do with “taking” money from them…all of the teams in the league that didnt break the rules split the money that they are being penalized…shouldnt have broken the rules
