The Saints have made a pair of cuts, one for financial reasons and one of the more traditional variety.

According to Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the Saints released tight end David Thomas and waived cornerback Johnny Patrick.

Thomas is a good second tight end, but he was due $1.5 million in base salary this year, and a $200,000 roster bonus.

Patrick, a 2011 third-round pick, started just one game in two seasons. He’s subject to waivers, but Thomas is now free to find new employment.

The Saints are still significantly over the salary cap, and more releases are inevitable before the start of free agency.
